Rating: Summary: Glad about this book Review: I started reading this book thinking it would be another boring classic but I was surprised, it turned out to be one of my favorite books. It's funny, exciting and has a good storyline. I would recomend this book to anyone!
Rating: Summary: mixed feelings Review: I was interested by the comment that "Pollyanna," in the opening chapters at least, has so many similarities to "Anne of Green Gables" by L.M. Montgomery. I have thought that myself, and wondered why it never seems to be pointed out. especially as "Pollyanna" was published only 4 years after Montgomery's instantly famous book. Perhaps it is because it develops differently as the book progresses.
As to my opinion of it, I can only repeat "mixed feelings." Just as I am about to dismiss it as corny, unrealistic and third-rate, I find that I actually want to keep reading it! I have to admit, young girls like it - I liked it without reservations when I was a young girl, and made a point recently of finding a copy for my eight -year-old.
Rating: Summary: Completely unrealistic, irritating Review: I would give it zero stars if I could. The part that bothered me most was when Pollyanna's aunt, converted to Pollyanna's rather unbalanced way of thinking, finds stories of people who were "helped" by her philosophy. Two poor children have only a door to shelter them in a blizzard and wonder what children do who haven't even a door; an old woman has only two teeth but is so glad because they "hit." The book's social message is this: Everything could always be worse; this is a reason for foolish optimism. --The point of life is not to be able to twist all one's misfortunes (and other people's) so they seem like blessings; the author and Pollyanna appear to think otherwise, making for an infuriating story which also contains the stock "comic" character (a street boy with an unrealistic accent and boring) and unlikely romance (between Aunt Polly and the local doctor, who quarreled years ago over a small matter; it took the paralysis of Pollyanna's legs for thewm to make peace). This book deserves all the deprecation it has got.
Rating: Summary: Bre's Review: It is easy to understand why this book is a classic. I read it for the first time when I was eight, and seven years later I still enjoy it. Pollyanna herself is truly heartwarming, even though at times she seems a little too good to be true. The other characters are also a little stereotyped, but they have been so well described and woven into the story that it doesn't matter so much. A must read.
Rating: Summary: Worn Out Words Review: Pollyanna is a digraceful novel. There are many misspelled and worn out words. In 1907 women did not have the right to do anything they want. So they looked up to Pollyanna and her joyfulness. Now, women have the right to do anything, unlike back then. I would not recomend this realistic fiction book to anyone. It is horrible.
Rating: Summary: The Glad Game Review: Pollyanna is a great book at any age. She always found something to be glad about. Pollyanna's father made up the glad game, and now Pollyanna plays it and teaches everyone else how to play. It made a lot of unhappy people a lot happier than they were before. After her father's death, Pollyanna goes to live with her Aunt Polly and she is an unhappy woman and Pollyanna and her game make her happy in the end. This is a story about appreciating all the good things in life. I think you should read this book because to me it was a great book!
Rating: Summary: Perfect! Review: Pollyanna was a great book. It was about a girl named Pollyanna. She had had gotten her name from her mom's sisters, Polly and Anna. When she goes to live with her Aunt Polly, she does not feel welcome. Her Aunt owned a very large house and she was forced to live in the dusty, old attic. Read to find out how she manages to live with her unkind, rude, selfish, and rich aunt.
Rating: Summary: Some people seem to miss the point of this story Review: Polyanna's optimism is not "imbalanced" - she does nothing more than try to find a silver lining behind every dark cloud. The very point is that life is full of inequities. Its all too easy to feel bad; certainly everyone has problems, and some people have real reasons to be miserable. Regardless of one's situation, one can feel better by finding the good points, even if they are contrived, rather than dwelling on the bad points. Improving your own outlook directly affects quality of life, including that of those around you. I'd say Pollyanna is rather more balanced than most people, because she does not allow herself to indulge in self-pity and depression so much as others might. Its an important lesson about coping with life in general.
Rating: Summary: SMILE! Review: This book really took me at heart. The thought of such a young firl who is positive through all the bad and the good. Nothing was unhappy or sorrowful. To have such an impact on a whole town is what caught my attention and made it one of my favorites.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: This book right away reminded me of Anne from Anne of Green Gables. Pollyanna too is inventing new games and she loves to talk too. Pollyanna comes up with a wonderful game to find someting wonderful in everything. She's always cheerful and find life a big game. It's a great book and you just have to read it. This book captures you right away and sweeps you into the world of Pollyanna. You are left, too, with the feeling of wanting to find something good in everything in life...
