Summary: Twist and shout
Review: 'Twelve Red Herrings' bears the trademark of 'twist in the tale' and 'a quiver full of arrows'- common of Jeffrey Archer. But perhaps a little too much. 'one man's meat' was especially disappointing as nothing really comes out of the story, and in fact for all the twelve twisting herrings, nothing really came out of it at all, except for the fact that the reader would be ridiculed if he or she should try to predict the endings, some of which are totally unthinkable, and unthinkable indeed, because you would probably have to meditate over and over to get WHY or HOW it should happened. This book leaves too much for the reader to ponder. Not for those looking for before-bedtime entertainment. A practice of his personal style that is quite untunable to.

Summary: Some were good... and some were not.
Review: Basically, some of the stories were great, and others were pretty awful. That's why this book only gets 3 stars.

The point of the book is that all the stories are supposed to have surprise endings, and some of them do. About 70% of the stories succeeded in keeping my interest and provided me with an unexpected ending. However, some of them left me wondering "well, what was the point of that?"

Another downside is that after so many 'surprise endings', you start to know what to expect, and you when you start looking for the clue about what's to come, you can usually figure out what the 'surprise' will be.

Overall, it's a good book to read if you want to be lightly entertained. You will be treated to some exceptional story telling, and some time wasting trash, which is certainly not the trademark of Jeffery Archer. I was happy with the book and you will be too, if you are willing to overlook the few bad parts and allow yourself to enjoy the rest.

Summary: Good for my 1st Archer book
Review: I consider this compilation of fast-paced short stories to be a good read. If critics say this is not one of Archer's best, then, I look forward to reading his other materials.

Compared with Roald Dahl's Tale of the Unexpected, which is also a compilation of short stories, I prefer this one more.

Summary: Nice for the Price
Review: I did read this right after two other Archer books so I was a little burned out on his style. A little more literary then his other books and his style is a bit too dry in this volume for my tastes. One thing that makes his books so charming is his typecasting of Americans. Don't expect our culture to be taken too seriously here. Well worth a look and the price is sooo reasonable.

Summary: A very entertaining collection of short stories
Review: I enjoyed this book, especially "One Man's Meat...", which is the last story and has 4 possible endings. I would advise strongly that you read them all (I found the first one to be the best). The only flaw about this book is that the endings to the stories weren't particulary surprising, but it is still well worth a look for anyone who enjoys Jeffrey Archer's fantastic novels

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Not one of the Jeffrey Archer masterpieces ....
Review: I liked Archer's novels better than this collection of short stories. These stories are written with vivid descriptions, but they fail to pack a punch.

One commmonality among the short stories is the Archer penchant of an unexpected finish. Though at times, this too gets to be as predictable as discovering the identity of 'bad guys' in a Superman comic.

Summary: Audio cassette was fabulous
Review: I listened to this on the way to the beach in my car, and it was totally riveting. The guy who narrates has a great aristocratic British accent which is so fun to listen to. I found each and every story engaging as well.

Summary: Wannabe
Review: Ignore the brown-nosing reviews on the back cover, many of which lifted from the British right-wing press. This is amateur storytelling, at best, with watery plots and weak -- sometimes embarrassing -- choices of phrase. When it comes to scorpion tales, Mr Archer, I'm afraid you're no Roald Dahl.
