Rating: Summary: This book was exccelent it was a must read. Review: If you haven't read this book you have got to get your hands on it. The action and suspense were amazing Alistair Maclean is one amazing auther. There were so many twists and turns in this book I thought I was going to get sea sick. If you like any war novel this book is definetly for you.
Rating: Summary: Very exciting, but sometimes a little confusing Review: It is a great book, very exciting, but it can sometimes be a little hard to tell which is enemy and which is not. Double agents can be quite confusing....
Rating: Summary: Best of MacLean Review: MacLean was a master. I read this book in high school; I want to read it again. It's a mystery, a thriller, action; i know what happens, right? I don't care! Reading it is too much fun! Smith and Schaffer steal the show; er, pages. Read the book rather than watching the movie.
Rating: Summary: a great book!! Review: Probably the best book I've ever read! The suspense is great. You know they'll make it...or will they?
Rating: Summary: A gripping, fast-moving action story. Review: Set in Germany, this is the story of how a captured American general is rescued from the "impenetrable" Gestapo Headquarters by a team of special agents, led by the unflappable Smith. Their task, however, is made more difficult by treachery in the group. This is an excellent book, definitely one of MacLean's best, full of plot twists and suspense. It is a gripping, fast-moving novel for anyone who likes a good action story.
Rating: Summary: Sit! Down! Major! Review: Surprisingly hard to come by nowadays, this novel was written in parallel with the fantastic film (in a similar way to '2001: A Space Odyssey', but with much more action). It makes an interesting companion-piece - there are some subtle differences in detail and tone, and whilst the book has plenty of action the destruction isn't quite so over-the-top. Best of all, you can pour over the famously-tortuous plot at your leisure, without having to pause and write down a little flowchart showing who is pretending to be who. On the downside, you don't get the fantastic soundtrack, or Clint Eastwood's mildly-peeved grimaces as bullets zing around his head. Although he will forever be associated with 'Eagles', MacLean was more of a cold war thriller writer than a war-thriller writer, and the book is an odd cross between straightforward WW2 action and a John Le Carre-esque spy thriller, meaning that the book is doubly dated, but still great fun.

Rating: Summary: Aamazing and gripping Review: The story of commandoes who parachute into enemy territory during the second world war on a rescue mission. This is arguably the best book that Alistair McLean has ever written. Every page brings more surprises and action. Definitely unputdownable.
Rating: Summary: Perhaps the most fun spy novel ever written Review: There may be other spy novels that are deeper, or more complex, or more realistic, but as a heavy consumer of the genre I have never read one that is more fun. The action is great, and it is full of great twists and turns. . Even better, though, is the dry humor and witty dialogue between the two heroes (Smith and Schaeffer). You can read it in a single rainy afternoon (and probably will).
Rating: Summary: Good Book from a Good Author Review: This author makes his living on plot twists. Just when you think you have it figured out there is a new course. The story is a good one and very well told. The author has his historical facts correct which is important in this type of book. I would like more to a story, the editors in the 70's must have been paid per word they cut as it seams most books of that era are a little on the short side. That aside this is a good yarn with a good story.
