Summary: This is a great novel and a classic
Review: A powerful novel that addresses initiation through the innocence the Joel loses from his stay at Skully's landing. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves the classics.

Summary: A riveting examination of the heart
Review: An infinitely complex novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms is a riveting examination of the often disturbing human heart. One of Capote's most obscure novels, the book is difficult to comprehend as it is read. It takes great effort to move from page to page trying to find the patterns in the ambiguous and suggestive imagery. However, on completing on the novel and thinking about it, one finds that Other Voices, Other Rooms is a gift to literature. Nobody can agree on what Capote was actually insinuating, but what we can all agree on is that when one reflects on the novel as a whole, one is very likely to think about one's life in a different way. A must read for a serious reader.

Summary: Vivid Imagery, Capote captures the infinite in everything
Review: Capote is so captivating that every chapter could be the premise for another novel.Capote's imagery and creative use of linguistics are spellbinding. Its shocking to think Capote was only 17 when he wrote this masterpiece!

Summary: Tangible prose that reaches out to grab hold of the senses.
Review: Capote's first novel written at the age of 23 showed his genius from the start. The beguiling story of a youth who comes to live with family long forgotten; he is initiated into this house of confusing characters and ghosts that haunt the past as well as the present.

Capote's talent lies in his ability to make you feel the warm, muggy southern breeze upon your throat as he wraps it around your very body. He writes of his south like a man possessed and enthralled with the life that abides there. At times the story tends to wander and for that I would give it a 3.5 but for all intents and purposes it is entirely unforgettable. Kelsana 7/24/01

Summary: my voice in my room
Review: Finished this book today and I can say that it is the first book in a long time that I could not put down. I found myself reading Capote's words with a thick as molasses southern drawl. Joel Knox is the personification of the disappointment and the horrors of puberty. Jesus Fever, what a name for a character. I found myself grieving over the loss of every word that I had read. I knew that the novel would be over soon and I did not want to put it aside. Imagery so vivid, and the understanding that Joel has regarding the darkest areas of his caretakers minds, heartwrenching knowledge for this poor soul searching for love and belonging as he is. Maslow's bottom rung is never obtained. I thought of Tennesee Williams' works while reading this novel. Enjoy!

Summary: This is it
Review: Forget what you've heard about IN COLD BLOOD being the number one Capote book. It isn't. OTHER VOICES is and should always be the thing he is rememberd for. While not a large book, it is, by most literary stands, almost perfect. Sure, it's Gothic, but then that's what the South is about, and consider too when he wrote it. It's really a coming of age tale, with more insight and twists than you'd expect from someone as young as Capote was when he wrote it. Of all the works by this great author, this is the first one you should tackle. Also, try reading it with its companion book, THE BARK OF THE DOGWOOD by Jackson McCrae.

Summary: Must read for everyone!!!
Review: I absolutly fell in love with Joel Knox. Through Capote's brilliant use of language, I felt everything I read. Capote is a GOD!!!

Summary: Flood of imagery
Review: I found myself swimming amidst a flood of imagery which was beautiful yet tended to distract me from the story line. I, being from Louisiana, felt that Capote's work creates the ambience of this region in a very effecive manner - gravel roads and moss laden trees included. I found, however, that the characters tended to be of the surface and Capote denied us the depth of thought and feeling with the exception of Joel. This was truly an amazing feat for Capote as his first novel and I can say that I enjoyed the beautiful imagery thoroughly.

Summary: This Story Touched Me
Review: I read this book a few years ago and it truly touched me. I could not put it down and read it in one sitting. I still have it and and although I never read a book twice I won't ever part with it. I have read all of his books and all I can say is that Capote was a genius.
