Summary: Virtue is not dead!
Review: I cry for my country. If only the leaders of this great nation would read and comment on this book. Think what a wonderful discourse we could have in this election year. Gordon Hinckley has put on paper what millions of American's believe. America is a choice and wonderful land. We are only as strong as our weakest link. God Bless America!

Summary: Authoritative and Optimistic
Review: Gordon B. Hinckley writes from the perspective of age and authority; his message is clear and bold; and his views are forthright and frank. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially the degree of optimism and hope that is projected upon humanity and our ability to rectify many of our societal problems by adhering to the most basic virtues. Through his life's experiences and illustrative anecdotes, he details precisely, and without apology, the results of living such virtues as honesty, faith, morality, and civility. His message is replete with examples and suggestions on how we can stand for good and truly make a difference.

Summary: Standing for Something: 10 Negleced Virtues
Review: It is one of the most marvelously crafted books I have ever read! It has changed my attitude and life.

Summary: Easy to read...Hard to follow!
Review: This book is simple but not simplistic. Hinckley's straight-forward approach makes the book an easy read but that does not mean it isn't profound! After reading it quickly I plan to keep in nearby as a reference and reminder...we could all use the lessons taught in this book.

Summary: A heartwarming experience
Review: I read Gordon Hinckley's book over two evenings. I enjoyed the tone of this book every bit as much as I appreciated the spirit of Bennett's "The Book of Virtues."

Both of these books promote the goodness, the warmth, the peace, the personal satisfaction associated with one's being anchored to time-honored values.

"Standing for something" is right on target with what is necessary for our society to move back to stability in the family and decency in the community.

Hinckley's book is not only insightful and uplifting, but it is very easy and pleasant reading. One feels as if he or she is spending an evening with a wise, dear friend while reading this book.

Summary: A Perfect Guide for Life
Review: I could not believe how good this book was! The chapter on honesty was especially brilliant. Gordon Hinckley has offered a great guide to life that if followed, will lead to happiness. We live in a world of "moral relativism" where morals are relative to whatever an individual wants them to be. Hinckley shows that "old fashioned values" are not old fashioned at all, and he details how society is quickly downfalling because of our ignorance and even disdain for these values. Perhaps critics would have a right to call the virtues that he champions outdated and harmful if they could show that we as a society are better because of the so called "progress" we've made in moving away from these values. In fact, poll after poll, survey after survey shows that Americans believe we are worse off than we ever have been before. Hinckley shows us that we can have hope and that we can get on the right track!

Summary: Changing Families and the World
Review: This book was a refreshing and inspiring look at the neglected values that have brought our nation into prosperity. Gordon Hinckley writes with warmth and personal conviction about the importance of reflecting on timeless principles that enable individual happiness, family success, and world unity. If all men and women were to read and apply the teachings in this book we would see the force of good increase around the globe. This book is a must for first-time parents and all others interested in promoting the good of mankind.

Summary: Standing for an Honest Review
Review: With their lack of objectivity vis-à-vis this book, many of the previous reviewers make me wonder if they've read it at all. In possible contrast to some of them, I actually did read the book this weekend at a friend's house.

Readers who would praise self-improvement books of other stripes have no reason to demur at this "light read" by the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Judge the values Hinckley espouses for yourself: love, honesty, morality, civility, learning, forgiveness and mercy, thrift and industry, order, gratitude, optimism, faith. Not only are they not exclusive to Mormons or Christians, but I would posit that even most irreligious people would find little fault with any of those attributes, save perhaps faith. Hinckley himself repeats two or three times that he is "a churchman", so finding faith on the list is no surprise.

Hinckley had an extensive public relations background within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before and after accepting leadership responsibilities so no one should doubt his capacity to author this book. That being said, it is also patently clear that Hinckley chose to write "Standing for Something" at about a Reader's Digest level--which in itself is no bad thing. Most casual readers aren't looking for Augustine or Aquinas. If they were, then Chopra and Covey wouldn't sell.

It is naïve and highly myopic to suggest that this is one of the best books ever written, but it is equally dishonest to pan it as sheer pablum. The truth is that the book is an accessible and straightforward review of principles presented in a manner that is for the most part engaging, if not particularly complex. If you are looking for a more intellectual treatment of ethics or morality, then you should already be aware that you are shopping in the wrong department. If you are looking for a casual read that reinforces principles of good living, then this will meet your needs.

Summary: A book or an author?
Review: It is interesting to find that those who didn't like the book, were in fact criticizing the author--with whom I'm sure they do not have a personal relationship. Those who disagree with the teachings of the church Hinckley belongs to will stop at nothing convince others of their own feelings--even review a harmless book by the church's leader. I find it petty and even arrogant.

The book itself is an easy read. I find it refreshing to read a book that espouses "old-fashioned" values that society seems to so casually discard. Indeed, if more people were to "Stand For Something"--anything at all, instead of blowing wherever the wind takes them, we would enjoy a much more responsible and respectful society. I applaud the author for sharing his stories and ideas with mainstream America.

Summary: Don't waste your money
Review: The sequel to this book will be by Osama bin Ladin titled "How I won the nobel peace prize." Standing for something is not what Mr. Hinckley has ever done in his life. He is all about his organization and what benefits it. "Lying for the lard" and careful ommisions of truth make this man a poor author for a book of this sort.

Ironically, I view favorably every single virtue listed in this book. But knowing where the author comes from gives him little credibility. On the bright side, with millions of zealots hanging on every word, perhaps the members of his church will actually heed his words and do what they always do, and ignore his actions.
