Summary: attention getter
Review: For someone who knows the basics of the computer and otherwise, is fairly illiterate when it comes to hacking and programming, etc. this was a spell-binding read. There is a serial killer who uses the computer to get information on various people, the more difficult to get to, the better, and then murders them. It is a game to him. He is so good that the police go to the prison to get the help of another great hacker. It is a book that keeps you wondering who the killer is and who his helper is till the end.

Summary: the best internet novel I've ever read
Review: I loved this book. It not only tackles the issues of cyberspace and computer crime but also has a riviting thriller story to keep you reading. I'm not the biggest fan of Deaver's other work but this one is brilliant.

Summary: 2 1/2 Stars
Review: This book started out ok. Actually, about 75% is pretty good, suspensful. But once it nears the end, it seems as if the author can't decide how to end it all. And he doesn't make the right decision. The ending is a train wreck, plot and story lines twisted beyond recognition.

Summary: Didn't have the scare/surprise factor of other books...
Review: When I came online to write a review about this book, I decided to read more from the other reviewers first. Maybe that isn't such a hot idea, because it will influence your own reviews...but for some reason this book just didn't catch my attention like Deaver's other books on Lincoln Rhymes. No...it's not just because Lincoln is disabled, no matter what people think about my slightly biased views because I am deaf.
Even though the book was enjoyable, there was a slightly false 'air' to it. After reading the reviews of the many computer geeks (no offense intended since I admire them) and those in the know in the computer world, I think I understand why the mystery came off this way. No amount of research can make up for the basic characterization, and a decent plotline. In this book, the plot was okay, but the characters came across as cardboard dummies. Very little emotional involvement attached to them. Another major problem, is having some computer background myself, like the other reviewers said the information concerning computers seemed contrived. I didn't realize it went so far as to include 'made up words' not used within computer geekdom. To me that is bad precedent for the basis of a novel. Deaver should have at least checked with those involved in that world first before writing this stuff into his mystery.

Having said that...Deaver is one of the better mystery writers today for the most part. The plot was good and the book could have been written better. Did anyone else get the idea that this was written along the lines of a script for a movie or TV show? I know the one movie they did using one of Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme novels was not a hit, but please...those of us who enjoy reading mysteries do not want to read scripts! This is a very light, enjoyable read, especially if it's a first time exposure to Deaver or a summer beach book.

Summary: Best cyber crime novel out there
Review: This is the best cyber crime book out there. Unlike William Gibson stories this novel is as well written as a James Patterson crime thriller. Trying to work out the identity of Sean who is Phate the killer's accomplice is up there with an Agatha Christie detective story.

You do not have to have an understanding of cyber jargon to enjoy this book as it is written in layman's terms with the characters explaining every term they use to less computer literate police officers and other characters whenever something complicated comes up. There is also a glossary at the back if you want to use some of these terms in day to day conservations.

The plot is sensational and is basically about a serial killer who is a computer genius that has been fired by a company in Silicon Valley so is committing murders on victims who live there. He has created a program called Trapdoor which gives him access to every detail of the person's computer he has infiltrated. This is how he gets his victims which he sees as other players in a real life Dungeons and Dragons type thing where he can no longer differentiate between the virtual and real worlds.

Police are forced t call on the help of a convicted in jail hacker Wyatt Gillette to catch Phate. Of course Wyatt has his own agenda.

This sensational novel has many twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end. Who is Sean? What is Wyatt's real agenda? You won't go to sleep until you've read the last page.

Summary: Cover to cover intrigue.
Review: My first Jeffery Deaver book. Rrecommended by a friend, this book takes place in the Silcon Valley area of California. A short glossary is provided for a few of the techno terms that may be new to the reader. This thriller starts with action from the first chapter and continues with twists, turns and surprises. The abilities of hackers, and crackers give a frightening insight to the dark side of the internet. Nothing appears to be secure. The definition of human life, and virtual life blur in a dark way. This book should be read now, as it will become dated as everything in the technology sector does rapidly.

Summary: Enjoyable Read
Review: This is my 5th Deaver novel, and although not up to the Lincoln Rhyme standards, I did thoroughly enjoy the book. As with his other work, Deaver continually puts his readers through many twists and turns (I cahnged my mind on Shelton several times to the point I couldn't remember if I was for him or not). Not being a computer genius, I was very entertained by the concept of the "Blue Nowhere" and feel that Deaver did a nice job of explaining the (possible) inner-workings of the Internet without bogging me down with the painful technical jargon and concepts. The continual battle and out-guessing that occurs between Wyatt and Phate was exceptionally fun. Hey, some of the stuff may be far-fetched for the ultra computer-literate, but I did buy the book in the fiction section of the bookstore.

Summary: The Secrets of the Blue Nowhere
Review: You have access to all the information in the world. You can control people's lives. Welcome to the Blue Nowhere. In the Blue Nowhere, a novel by Jeffrey Deaver, you are plunged into a world where one can be anyone they want to be. One man has taken this concept too far. Phate, a sadistic hacker, seeks one thing: ultimate access. In his mind, the only way to achieve ultimate access is to stab the victim in the heart. To Phate, it is all a game. Only Wayne Gillette, an imprisoned hacker, can bring this deadly game to an end.

Summary: Fast paced thriller!
Review: Wyatt Gilette, an imprisoned hacker, is asked to help police solve a crime involving computers. Murders are being committed by Phate, a mysterious hacker who has full knowledge of his victims because of a program he wrote to invade their computers. For Phate, this is a game, not real life and each new victim is just another 'level' for him. This book is full of twists and turns and it'll keep you guessing right until the very end.
