Summary: Not just for women!
Review: An excellent book that would be helpful for men also. Practical advice given in a loving manner. Excellent "real life" examples to illustrate points.

Summary: Mr. Negative from NC is wrong and Alice Domar is right.
Review: Ask any social worker who has worked in adoption. My mother did and she watched couples try to have a baby for years, wait years and years more to adopt a child, to only then get pregnant after the stress is over and they've already adopted a child. It is books like Ms. Domar's that can help us relax before going through all that waiting and get pregnant naturally. There is substantive evidence that relaxation is a statistically significant factor. Too bad, it's something we can do for ourselves instead of depending on the system.

Summary: A Must-Read for Both Men and Women
Review: Dr. Alice Domar's book on Self-Nurturing is a must-read for both men and women! To say that this book is simply a woman's book and has no application to men is like saying we really don't want to understand the lives and experiences of over 50% of our population. Self care is what stress management and Mind/Body Medicine are all about, and this book sheds light and understanding on these important issues. Recommend this book to women AND men everywhere! . . . Gary L. Flegal, Ph.D., Professional Stress Management Services.

Summary: Should have been a magazine article
Review: I don't usually review books, but felt compelled because this one was such a waste of time and I guess I'm sore about it. I'm not sure why I plodded through this interminable book; probably because I was hoping for some revelatory advice that would justify my investment. No such luck. In addition to being poorly edited (I caught a few errors), the book is poorly organized and sooooo repetitive. I easily could reduce the entirety of the plodding narrative to a magazine article very suitable for O! magazine: rely on good friendships and family relationships, take a hot bath, get a manicure or massage, eat well, get enough sleep, use cognitive reasoning, set healthy boundaries, do yoga, ask for help, take deep breaths to relax...this is news?

Summary: A great system for nurturing ourselves
Review: I have both the book and the audio tapes, and I use them both often. I was one of those serious workaholics who ruined my health with long work days, lots of business travel, bad nutrition, no exercise and no downtime. Alice Domar offers simple solutions for nurturing your body, mind and soul back to a state of balance. We can all hustle and bustle ourselves into an early grave, or we can take a few minutes each day to relax and enjoy life. This books shows you how to relax into it - and by it I mean your life, your job, your relationship, losing weight - everything that we take so seriously in life. Once you start honoring yourself with self love, soul nurturing and quiet time for yourself, you will find that the world around you will change. You will no longer feel obligated to rush through life to get to the next task or appointment. While everything in this book and the audio tape set may not work for you, I am sure there are a few suggestions that will make a difference in your life. Ms. Domar is not trying to offer miracles in your life. She is just trying to make sure you take the initiative to have a long, healthy and happy life.

Summary: another woman's comfort book
Review: I like Domar's book but it's just not very fresh. The Woman's Comfort Book by Jennifer Louden and other books proclaimed this same message years ago - and with more style and detail. But I do love hearing it from Harvard!

Summary: wondering
Review: I'm wondering why when I submitted a negative review, it didnt show up on this web site. I took Ms. Domar's class (yes, she did invent yoga), and found it bordering on absurd. To lead women with serious medical problems to believe they can "relax" and then they'll get pregnant - she claims that's not what she says, but that's exactly the interpretation of her work she encourages. So if I submit the truth in a review, but with 5 stars, will amazon add it to the web site?

Summary: Attitude is everything
Review: It may be obvious that attitude is the key to controlling stress, but like another book that covers this idea, TRAVEL WITH OTHERS WITHOUT WISHING THEY'D STAYED HOME, it's helpful to be reminded that we can control our attitudes.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Common Sense
Review: It's hard to argue with much in this book, since it's mostly common sense. This is basically a self-help book with four different programs (for each of the four seasons). The ideas are drawn from a number of contemporary sources (e.g., The Relaxation Response) and presented in engaging, but repetitive manner.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Extremely Helpful
Review: It's so easy for women to forget to take care of themselves. This book shows that it is in the best interest of their health and well-being, and that of their families, too, to take care of themselves. This book is a great follow-up to Domar's previous book, Healing Mind Healthy Woman. Women owe it to themselves to learn more about self-care. It's making a huge difference in my life.
