Rating: Summary: She loves it; I hate it; it works Review: This is a hokey book which contains all of the worst visual representations of the 60s and 70s. Still, my child loves it. True, she usually thinks the potty depicted here is a cup, and says yes to the question of whether it is a vase to hold flowers every time, but she gets the picture (how could she not, the illustrations are that obvious). The illustrations are only good in the sense that the more realistic books do not adequately portray missing the potty. But, the illustrations reflect a terrible era. Think muu-muus, the stylized dove, 2-d everything, shades of orange, pink and avocado. I really don't like reading this -- the words are stilted, the colors are horrifying, but it seems to work (or such is the consensus among mothers I know).
Rating: Summary: A gentle approach to potty training Review: This is a no pressure, all in good time approach. We follow Dr Sears' philosophy, and this book worked well for our daughter. The video was a big hit! She loves the babies dancing around, the music, and I like the "adults" part at the end in which a prominent doctor gives excellent advice.
Rating: Summary: Remember, a book doesn't do anything on it's own! Review: To those of you who complained about the dated drawings: the book is from the 70s. That's why the illustrations look like...they're from the 70s. To those of you who feel the potty doesn't look enough like a potty: get one of your own and show it to your kid. Who do you think has more influence, you or a book? Can't your child differentiate between two different articles of clothing and still know that they are both meant to be worn? Please remember, a book is never meant to replace a parent. It is a tool for you to use to your best advantage. I wish the book showed the baby pulling down her pants, but I know that I can pass that along to my baby all by myself!
Rating: Summary: Every two year old who is not potty trained needs this book! Review: We bought this as a birthday gift for our Goddaughter. She had not previously shown any interest in the potty. After getting the book and the video- make sure you get the video too!- she was trained to perfection in three weeks! It really inspired her.
Rating: Summary: Poor rating from my toddler Review: We have several potty books for little girls, and "Once Upon a Potty" by far is not one that my daughter ever picks up to have me read to her. In fact, we've had this book for almost a year now and I think I've only read it to her twice. My daughter just pushes the book away when I pick it up for us to read. The illustrations are dark and not at all brightly colored or interesting. And like the other review listed here, my daughter calls the potty in this book a cup. I bought this book online, and only after reading xlnt reviews. If I had seen it at our local bookstore, I wouldn't have bought it.
Rating: Summary: What a terrible book! Review: We were anxious to get all sorts of potty training books for my daughter and this was well known so we got it. I cannot express how much I dislike this book. The only way I can get through it is to read it in an English Accent to amuse myself. My daughter likes it ok but I just can't stand it. I have hidden it from her so I never have to read it again. The language is not accurate (wee wee and poo poo), repetitive (not in a good way) and the pictures don't accurately portray current potty seats at all. Run don't walk to find other books!
