Summary: A mixed collection
Review: A collection of short stories of mixed length, quality, and subject matter. Most readers will like at least some of the stories, most of which have an English setting. The stories range from a roughly one-page Arabian nights account ("Death Speaks") to a 78-page account of a man determining his true friends ("The Endgame"). The majority are based on true incidents, and some, e.g., "Crime Pays" and "Too Many Coincidences," involve people using their knowledge of the law for their own benefit. I personally liked the last story, "The Grass is Always Greener," which points out that success and happiness are a matter of perception.

Summary: Just another book
Review: All the stories has their own message, but I can't tell you that is a good reading, if you have another book to read take it and read it, read this one between books (one or two stories) and then another book and may be you will be interested in the stories, as always in these kind of books, you just can skip the last story, is very long and it says almost nothing.

Summary: Skip it.
Review: Archer has about 3 tricks he likes to use in this book. With 14 stories, this gets old. By then end I was reading the first couple pages and then skipping to the end of the story to read the clever little ending. A very unfulfilling way to read. I just got the feeling that the author found himself to be very clever. With a novel there can be character development and such that will mitigate this fact, but in a short story if the gimick is weak the rest will fail as well. With the exception of "The Endgame" I found the stories quite forgettable.

Summary: Some stories were good, others were bland...
Review: Generally, I enjoyed this book and some of it's stories, however several stories were a little bland. The Grass is Greener was especially enjoyable though. Recommended for lite summer beach reading as you don't get too invested in any of the characters or stories.

Summary: An inconsistent collection of stories
Review: Having been introduced to Jeffrey Archer through his short stories (A Twist in the Tale, I believe), it was with special anticipation that I looked forward to his new collection.

Although none of the dozen-plus stories in this novel are truly bad, none are truly great either...instead they range from unimpressively average to fairly good.

His "based on real events" stories tend to fit into the former category. Such stories as "Love at First Sight," "A Weekend to Remember" and "The Reclining Woman" are mild entertainments with none of the great irony that his stories have been noted for. On the other hand, his more original stories such as "Chalk and Cheese" and "The Letter" show Archer's regular cleverness.

For a writer as adept with the short story as he is with the novel, this collection is a bit of a disappointment. If given the opportunity, I would rate this three-and-a-half stars, a good star less than Archer usually merits.

Summary: Enjoyable but not exceptional
Review: I am always on the lookout for a good short story so I bought this book with much anticipation.

Most of the stories are based on fact and while this adds an element of intrigue it seems to me that they were rather predictable. The stories kept me interested but do not result in any feelings of suspense/excitement/surprise.

Perhaps I am unfairly measuring this book on the short stories of Roald Dahl which are virtually impossible to beat for their twists, shocks and surprises. Archer's book is enjoyable but if you are looking for exceptional stories you'll be a little disappointed.

Summary: Amazing unbelievable stories
Review: I bought this book with a little awarness, that hopefully it might be better than the Archers books I have read recently. (Dont you think, that after readfin five of them in a row, all the people look the same???) The numberous stories, some of them based on the true stories, surprised me and had me turning the pages till 6am. Unbelievable. Also a nice catch for those who like to read on their way to the office, school or just have here and there 3éminutes to spare....

Summary: These were horrible!
Review: I can't believe that other reviewers thought that these stories contained "stunning plot twists!" These stories were really terrible---there were no interesting twists at all. After I finished each story, I was left thinking, "What was so interesting about that?" I purchased this title thinking that I would be intruiged by how each story unfolds, but I didn't find any of the tales in this book to have any redeeming qualitites. really, one of the worst titles that I have ever purchased.

Summary: Take a rest
Review: I have enjoyed most of this authors books. In this one he appears to have been writing in his sleep, the old "get up and grab the reader" is missing. Perhaps he has too much on his mind with his personal problems. He should take a break, then come back and wow us with his earlier skills.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Good but VERY easy reading
Review: I have enjoyed the stories in this book, but it is very simply written. I blew through the first 150 pages on a short plane trip. I totally can recommend it if you want something brainless and since it is a mass market paperback it is easy to tote around.
