Rating: Summary: Fantastic Book! Review: If you loved "YaYas", you have to read this and CRAZY IN ALABAMA by Mark Childress. Ms. West writes beautifully! The characters are not always likable, but very much real. I see the african american character, I believe her name was Pearl - just can't think of it right now, was the best character. Always there for everyone - what a wonderful person she was! Wish they would make a movie of this book very soon. As another customer said in his/her review, I can see Kathy Bates as Dorothy. Further, I would recommend Shirley McLaine as Gussie, Tori Spelling as Clancy Jane, Drew Barrymore as Violet, Alicia Silverstone as Bitsy and, last but not least, Oprah Winfrey as Pearl!Don't miss this one and Ms. West's other book, "She Flew the Coop". Can't wait to read her other books!
Rating: Summary: Easy to read, gripping, but not great. Review: This book was well written and it grabbed me right from the beginning, but there was something missing. I couldn't really like most of the characters or care about what happened to them. I just wanted to know what happened next, if anyone grew or changed in any way, but no one did. That made for sort of an empty book.
Rating: Summary: A great book - much more than "good Southern writing" Review: Maybe I'm just tired of hearing about "Southern" writing. Great writing is just that - it does not necessarily have some particular geographic birthmark which can only be understood by a chosen few who happen to have lived in the same 200 mile radius. No, great writing is that which transcends such silly Rand McNally divisions of humanity and touches us on a deeply personal level. Crazy Ladies does just that. Read this masterpiece of a book. You won't be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't wait to see what malady hit next! Review: People seem to compare this to Ya-Ya's and Little Altars but it looks like this one came before...I enjoyed it thoroughly and read it from one night to the next afternoon. I just couldn't wait to see what horrible thing happened next! I can just picture Kathy Bates as Dorothy if a movie were to be made from it! Very good read!
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK IS FULL OF HIGHS AND LOWS BUT I LOVED IT Review: This book is very "Divine Secrets" like. The characters are deeply developed with all of their craziness. At times the tragedies get to be a bit much, but I really looked forward to reading it each day and finding out how things would turn out. I was sad to have the book end. I really enjoyed her writing style. I would definitely recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Ugh! Review: There is no comparing this depressing ride through the lives of these women with the laughter and tears we got from Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood. I wanted to slit my wrists when I finally go to the ending.
Rating: Summary: Fascinating character driven story about three generations Review: Gussie is young, strong, and determined. When a young man attempts to rape her, she takes matters into her own hands to protect herself. Her callousness is accepted, but she never stops feeling guilty about the outcome. Her secret is almost forever hidden in her garden. As her family increases and her children have children, their personalities intertwine into a most interesting but complex pattern. I am in a Reading Club of 8 women, and we all enjoyed it, even those who grew up in the South during those times.
Rating: Summary: I had a great time reading this! Review: I thought this book was fantastic! I read it in 2 days! I am from Tennessee and could relate to a lot of the story, even though times have changed a lot...I like Divine Secrets, also, but I thought this book was even better! I can't wait to read more of West's books. I have already bought them all!
Rating: Summary: An absolute riot! Review: Dorothy is quite a character! I highly recommend this book! If you like this you will love "Crazy In Alabama" by Mark Childress too!
Rating: Summary: I just couldn't put it down!!! Review: This was a wonderful book full of lots of imagery and wonderful detail. I fell in love with Delores and her struggle.
