Rating: Summary: what happened? Review: Clancy has sold his name to the highest bidder, not the best storyteller. This book has about a page worth of plot-- "identify sub, shoot sub, next sub please". Please Tom, stick to the great novels and quit letting these hacks throw your name in bold on really bad books.
Rating: Summary: BOOOORING! Review: About as interesting and exciting as a boxing match between Mike Tyson and George Burns. "Hey Mack there are some ships over there lets go sink them. Great job we sunk them. U-oh! here come some submarines lets sink them too. Great job, we sunk them too. Lets go get some more torpedos and do it again." You have just read the entire book so there is no need to buy it now.
Rating: Summary: Not his best Review: I'm a big fan of Clancy's older works, but his new efforts leave a lot to be desired. Clancy shmoozes with military personnel, gets interesting inside info, and then further ingratiates himself by writing extremely flattering books about them. I'd like to believe that a single SSN could take out most of the Chinese Navy, but I'm a little skeptical, and the bit with the deposed Chinese leader was just too much..........
Rating: Summary: Clancy's Worst Effort Review: This is the worst book I've ever read by Clancy. There is no plot, no suspense, and no character development. Being derived from a video game, it's like watching over someone's shoulder as they play the game since the interactive element is missing. I'm so disappointed by this that it will be a long time before I buy another Clancy book.
Rating: Summary: Sad to See Tom Clancy going so far down hill Review: This was probably the worst Tom Clancy book ever. He used to take the time to research for accuracy now all he seems to care about is ginning out books no matter how unaccurate they are. It was just absurd as to how the battles went. So easy for the Americans it took all enjoyment from reading the book. I am usually a big fan but this was just totally sad.
Rating: Summary: Surely not written by Tom Clancy Review: SSN was suspenseful; I'll give it that. But it was highly unrealistic. It's about a submarine called USS CHEYENNE that goes to war with the Chinese. To make a long story short, the USS CHEYENNE takes out the whole Chinese fleet of submarines(Not to mention some surface ships), and also some Soviet submarines, all by itself. It was also clearly not written by Tom Clancy. Maybe the initial idea came from him, but not the writing. And we all know the reason we like Tom Clancy is not only for his complex plots, but also for his addictive writing style. Good book. Unrealistic. Not written by Tom Clancy.
Rating: Summary: When you've got a nuclear submarine, who needs a story? Review: SSN began as an exciting read. Capt. Mack Mackey takes his Los Angeles class nuclear submarine deep into enemy waters to stealthily attack chinese shipping and defend American assets in the area. The world of a nuclear submarine is an exciting one and Clancy seems to be well versed in the details of that environment. I eagerly devoured the early action in this strange setting. However, once the submarine jargon got old I realized that that's all the book is. It's just a very detailed discription of the operations of a submarine. There are no characters that we know anything about, and there is not much of a story. If you're looking for a story I can sumarize it for you fairly simply: 1. The Cheyenne nuclear submarine encounters enemy. 2. Cheyenne sinks enemy becuase Cheyenne is quieter, has better sonor equipment and longer range torpedos and missiles. 3. Repeat process untill war is over. Every mission was essentially the same. In conclusion, I believe this is a good choice if you are looking for a book about how a modern submarine operates. If you're looking for a story or any interesting characters I believe you should look elsewhere. Two stars for interesting description of submarine operation.
Rating: Summary: SSN - A Submarine Combat Thriller? Review: Tom Clancy's "SSN" ranks high in my list of "most unenjoyed books". The book cover states that SSN is "a submarine combat thriller complete with stirring plots and characters." I wonder if the reviewer bothered to take the time to read as far as the second page? This novel contains no character development and no plot; only American propaganda, where the American hero makes no mistakes, and every Chinese captain is inept and glory-driven.
Rating: Summary: A Lousy excuse for a Book even if it is a good Computer Game Review: Simply put, this is one big commercial for his computer game. If you buy the computer game, the book might come in handy. If not, you're wasting your money. This is a series of fifteen chapters which apparently correspond to events in the computer game. There is some common thread throughout the chapters, mainly that we are at war with China over the Spratley Islands and that Clancy's sub skipper, one Captain Mack Mackey, goes about various missions as we go to war. Tom Clancy in his introduction, freely states that the book is modeled after the computer game but he also says that his goal is to give the reader "a strategy guide to submarine warfare". There is some strategy. The strategy is to sell the computer game. Take the "interview" with his friends... a significant amount of that interview discusses how closely the book follows the game. Enough said. Dont buy it unless you're going to buy the game too.
Rating: Summary: I bought this book for my husband and he loved it! Review: My husband is also a voracious reader. Together we go through enough books to supply a small army with entertainment. I thought he might like this book but didn't know how much he would enjoy it. He also mentioned that there wasn't anything objectionable in it. Hurray for the intellectual stimulation without dragging our minds through the gutter.
