Rating: Summary: History Needs to be Written Review: I kept thinking to read this book. I am thankful that I put it off until I was on vacation. I purchased the book in Corfu, Greece an island in the Ionian Sea that is very much like the island of Keffalonia. It is in fact mentioned often in the book. The history of the two islands, the way of life and the thinking, not to mention the food, the music and the language are all connected.I was consummed with the book. The people were very real and very accurate. The knowledge of the Greek way of thinking, the way the author caught the Greek soul in the story line, the jokes, the way Greek people use their language to uplift, to mold, and to hurt, and the very powerful use of humor to depict a very sad and horrible time in history make this book a thrill and a valid history book. Many people are angry that the book brings up the evil deeds of the English Army, the Italian Army, the Communists and the Facists. The real issue is that history needs to be told. The evil that humans use against other humans needs to be told. If we pretend or "whitewash" history to make ourselves feel better 50 years later, we only fool ourselves. If we use history to improve ourselves and our actions towards others we have become real people. Thank you to the author for his hard work and his bravery to stand and say, this happened. If you don't like what happened, or you are ashamed of your connection to the evil, then, recognize the great opportunity you have been given and make the future a better place. To deny what happened to feel better about yourself or your family or your political party is to take the truth and bury it deep, and evil will continue.
Rating: Summary: One of my all-time favorites Review: One of the few books I have read more than once, it captures the essence of the human spirit, the timelessness of true love, and the inescapable irony of the human condition. The rich history of this small Greek island caught in the middle of the chaos of war unfolds impartially through the eyes of each character. Capt. Corelli and Pelagia will dance off the pages and into your heart in this comedic, tragic, romantic, unforgettable tale.
Rating: Summary: Sheer Genius Review: Not much else to say, apart from that this book is not only a fantastic story, but technically magnificent. Anyone who doesn't enjoy it must have a heart of stone. Louis de Bernieres, I bow down to you.
Rating: Summary: rock your world Review: This is an incredible book, read it. It might take you a few pages to get into the book, but once you are into it, you will be captivated. de Bernieres' prose is unrivaled in its fluidity, clarity, and intelligence. He changes tone like nothing I have ever seen. I laughed out loud while reading on a public bus, and before I arrived at my stop, I was almost in tears from the moving narrative. Read this book and you will count yourself lucky.
Rating: Summary: A Beautiful Story Review: I admit, I almost gave up on this book. The first 100 pages or so seemed to drag. Luckily friends encouraged me to continue reading it. Am I ever glad I did. Never have I been so moved by a story. It was funny, it was sad. The prose was beautiful and at one point, I actually cried, -in the thousands of books I have read, I have never once shed a tear. Read this book. You will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Captain Corelli's Heart Strings Review: I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is the only book ever to make me laugh out loud and cry in the space of a few minutes. I have given the book to many friends to read over the past year and every female friend has said that she fell in love with Captain Corelli! This book is impossible to put down - I have had to buy another copy as the first had fallen to pieces! If you want to lose yourself completely inside a story then this book is the one for you.
Rating: Summary: One of the finest books that I have ever read Review: This has to be one of the finest books that I have ever read. I would recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Well worth the effort! Review: I found this book an effort at first, after years(I admit it) of easy-to-read paperbacks and magazines(and the telly!). It does actually require the old brain-cells to come to life and do the job they were intended to do- think. By the time I was 1/4 of the way through, though, I was utterly engrossed, and racing through the pages; at the expense of everything else. I almost dropped it in some soup I was cooking at one point, so loathe was I to put it down for anything. It is no exagerration to say this author is a genious and nothing I could say about this book could ever do it justice so just read it. Oh, and don't let the 'hype' put you off as it almost did me- I bet like me you'll get about 1/4 of the way into it and you'll have to read on because all of them, from Corelli & Pelagia right down to little Lemoni and Psipsina will have engulfed you totally.
Rating: Summary: Words cannot express... Review: I was put off buying a copy of "Captain Corelli's Mandolin", due to its popularity (it even appears at the end of "Notting Hill", in Hugh Grant's hand!), but I regret not having read it soooner. There is a very good reason for its popularity. Quite simply, it is a literary work of genius. Despite my young years, I have read many novels, and I have never been so moved. It is sad, without being depressing; historical and political, without being dull; romantic, without being conventional and, for want of a better word, "soppy". It is a novel which embraces the very epitome of the word "perfection"- I have even written to Mr. de Bernieres to commend him, something I have never done before; no author has even made me contemplate doing so until now. Some readers disliked the ending: I can understand their point of view, due to the sheer frustration and tears provoked, but there was a good twist of the plot, albeit somewhat cruel for the reader! Several times, I had to put the book down, to compose myself, that I may continue. I shouted! I roared with laughter! I sobbed! Once, I was crying for 10 minutes solid, laughing through my tears, in spite of myself. I have SO much to say about "Captain Corelli's Mandolin", but frankly, a) I have no words that can be compared to Mr. de Bernieres' and b) I would hate for someone to read my review, and to get their hopes up too much. Please, just read this book. It is a fabulous yarn!
