Summary: Fell Below High Expectations
Review: After reading Buckley's "Little Green Men", I was looking forward to "Thank You...", especially after one person wrote, "...laugh[ed] out loud on every page." There's something wrong with that person.

This book was a good way to spend an afternoon when it was too hot to be outside doing yardwork.

Summary: I went in to it in the wrong frame of mind...
Review: Personally, I thought the "humor" aspect of all the critics was a mass illusion or something. Sure, some parts were pretty darn funny, (the beggining sentance about the neo-puritanical buttlock was a little gem) but beyond that, I wanted more from a "comedy." It's an easy read, and it moves along after page 150 or so (The begining repeats itself with Nick going to different conferences and TV shows, all ending the same way). Don't go into it thinking "This'll be hilarious!", but rather "Maybe I'll laugh, maybe I won't. I'm bored, I'll take whatever I can get." Stick to Harry Potter.

Summary: An easy read.
Review: I bought this after reading some of the other readers' reviews that claimed this book was hilarious. It was an ok book; an original story-line; kind of predictable; a quick and easy read...but definitely not hilarious.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: I was given this book with a strong recommendation from a reliable source. For the first fifty pages, I was delighted - irreverent, insightful, clever - even well-written in spots. Buckley excelled at defining a beautifully sardonic initial setting along with it's denizens. His early description of his protagonist justifying "the industry's" position on television was absolutely delightful.

So why did I dislike this book? Because, after the intial glowing promise, the book became trite. Very trite. Car chases, cartoonish villians, improbably flaky Californians (which says something), elaborate setups, and some of the worst dialogue since "The Truth Machine". I actually had to painfully reread "the big confrontation" scene several times just to make sure Buckley was really wanting us to believe it. What is so painful is that this book could have been a "Catch 22," but settles for being yet another NYT Bestseller.

In short, beautiful setup and the promise of competent writing, but quickly loses focus and any genius it might have posessed. Read the first 50 pages. Then put it down.

Review: Damn funny! A must-read for anyone in the public affairs, government or journalistic fields

Summary: Read with a box of tissues for the tears of laughter
Review: Christopher Buckley makes me laugh out loud with everything he takes on. I will never look at a nicotine patch again without having the vision of Nick Naylor staggering around covered with the poisonous patches. Believe me, after you read "Thank You For Smoking", you will pass it on to someone you want to see have a good time.

Summary: Hilarious
Review: One of the five best books I've ever read. Great message wrapped in laugh out loud on every page. Mike

Summary: this book is fact disguised as fiction!
Review: This is a great satire. I am a former nurse, former lawyer, former beltway resident and worker bee and Mr. Buckley has DC down and the tobacco companies. If you really want to know how politics works this book is both chilling and funny. . . unfortunately, our public and personal health suffers as a result. Read this book and get enraged that the tobacco settlement money is not being used to decrease smoking or provide cessation to anyone who needs it!

Summary: Jello Literature
Review: in that the book is transparent and contains little mass. It did move and I did read it in a day. Unlike smoking; it does not leave any discernable aftertaste (good or bad) in your mouth.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Very very funny; read it
Review: need a pickup? then read this
