Summary: Too Real To Be a "Story" ... AWESOME
Review: This was my second Terry McMillan novel and will NOT be my last. This author is amazing. The writing flows so naturally and the characters and their story is so realistic that it wasn't like reading a book at all.The story itself was as good as the writing. These characters got into my head. I could relate to Zora's thoughts and personality. She was a successful, independent woman who'd had a history of choosing loser men (been there, done that). She feels for Franklin, a sexy, ruggged, bad boy type with natural intelligence and a sweet spot softer than cream. I could understand Franklin, a down-on-his luck guy who can't seem to catch a break, but a guy who WANTS to catch a break. He so reminded me of my brother.... a HUGE heart, but can't take one step forward without falling two steps behind. I also saw in him something I've seen in my brother... that a huge heart and yearning to do right can to turn into extreme anger and self-destruction if those steps backward do not become forward ones. Sweet, sad, real.... so true to life. A GREAT book!

Summary: Quite interesting
Review: This is very good book, and seems a bit longer than it looks. The narration and character play is really strong and makes one think theses are people next door, or in the family. One can't help bue find similar acts in ones life too. I know it made me think about my past. No wonder i am single. :) Still, with the think, you begin to see couples, a couple in there home and not out and with others. Something we often don't see. I didn't like the end, though. I think on Zora' behalf it went too quick.(though I did like the ending in the movie)

Summary: My Favorite Terry McMillan Novel
Review: Of all Terry McMillan's novels, Disappearing Acts is my favorite. Over the years, I have read this novel at least twenty times from cover to cover. Zora is a teacher who wants to be a singer. She always has done everything proper. Zora speaks the King's English and she takes pride in her education. However, Zora is not without problems. She has a secret about a medical condition that she is afraid to tell anyone. Also, she is a wannabe middle class. On a teacher's salary, she lives from pay check to pay check. Franklin is a blue collar worker and the King's English is a foreign language to him. Franklin never graduated from high school. For years, he has been separated from his wife. He never obtained a divorce, because simply he had no money. Franklin tries to be a good father to his children. Yet, nothing is ever good enough for his estranged wife. However, Franklin is not dumb and lazy. He is smarter than most men with a college degree. He is also very talented with wood sculpting. At first glance, Franklin and Zora don't seem like a good match. She is college educated and wannabe middle class and he is a working class brother. However, their attraction overrules
their differences. Franklin and Zora are not a perfect couple. They must learn to cope with each other's flaws. Disappearing Acts allows the reader to delve deep into the psyches of Zora and Franklin. We learn about their most intimate thoughts and deepest secrets. Disappearing Acts portrays Zora and Franklin with such clarity that we feel that Zora and Franklin are a couple whom we know.

Summary: I LOVED this book from the first page to the last....!
Review: I recently read A Day Late and A Dollar Short, I enjoyed it so much I went and bought this one. I am so glad I did! I thought her latest one was good, but Disappearing Acts put the icing on the cake! Terry McMillian writes and you instantly become a fly on the wall. Her writing style is so raw, honest and to-the-point! She is my favorite female author! I am instantly became friends with Zora and Franklin as they let me take peek into their lives. Zora was a strong black woman, but when it came to Franklin she melted like butter. She stuck with him through the good times and the bad. When Franklin didn't have a pot to (go to the rest room in) in and a window to throw it out she was right there. Sometimes I couldn't understand why a beautiful, intelligent woman like Zora that had so much going for herself would want a married, alcholic and uneducated man like Franklin bringing her down. But that is how it is when love comes into the picture. Now Frankiln was a good man, but when he was down and out he brought others along with him. I didn't like the fact that when times got hard he always took it out on the one person that was sticking it out with him --his woman! Even though I loved Zora and Franklin together, I think they are better apart. Franklin has alot of growing up to do and he needs to understand life ain't always peaches and cream! Disappearing Acts easily gets five stars and I HIGHLY recommend book lovers to read this one! I liked this one out of all of her books! Pick this one up today you'll be glad you did!

Summary: VERY DISAPPOINTED
Review: I am a big fan of Terry McMillan, but I left this book disappointed, and perhaps even annoyed and insulted. I love the strength and self-reliance that Terry allows her female characters. However, I found the main character, Zora, to be unassured, too pleasing, too forgiving, and overall weak. This character was very disappointing coming from Mrs. McMillan. Not to mention that I ended up LOATHING Franklin, who was never truely justified in any of his awful actions towards Zora, his 'love'.I left this book very annoyed and disgusted with the end result. I'm hoping for more strength in the future!

Summary: McMillan's Best Ever
Review: This was the first Terry McMillan book I ever read, and none of the others since have matched up to it. I've read it over and over again. It's a beautiful, unsentimental love story of two people who struggle to make their relationship work despite their issues and problems and differences. The book is written in the voices of the two main characters, and their personalities and lives are so real that I was completely drawn into the story of their romance. If you only read one Terry McMillan book in your entire life, it should be this one.

Review: DISAPPEARING ACTS is a very good book about the struggles a couple faces regarding the connection of lacking finances to human dignity and pride. Zora Banks is a school teacher with an aspiring singing career, who in the process of moving from one apartment to another, meets Franklin Swift. Franklin is a sexy construction worker who gives her more than just a hand. These two quickly acknowledge their attraction for each other, and as their relationship develops, Franklin moves into the apartment. Shortly thereafter, he loses his job, and with it, his pride, dignity and self-control. DISAPPEARING ACTS looks at the quick build-up and slow disintegration of a relationship. It studies the contrasts in dedication, personal values and resourcefulness between these two lovers. Finally it shows how different people manage success and failure, and how they plan a future beyond it.

Summary: Wonderful book!
Review: I believe this is McMillan's best. Of course the book is better than the movie so I don't suggest you see it. McMillan gets into the soul of these characters and you start to feel their pain, joy etc. Once I started it I couldn't put it down and I reread it twice. If you love black fiction, this is one to get!

Review: Disappering Acts by Terry McMillan is a great tale of how two strangers became lovers.Zora is a single independent woman who is trying to get her music carrer up and jumping.So she moves to manhatten in search of a new life.Where she meets franklina a man who is seperated with two kids. He is the mandingo man who is working on her new manhatten apartment.Zora and franklin get together in make turns for the bad and worst but also the better .You'll only find out if you read Dissapering Acts by Terry Mcmillian .A 5 star book. Just trust me!!!!!!!!

Review: Disapearing Acts was a dramatic love story. Zora Banks, an aaspiring singer and teacher, has been searching for the right man for a long time. Franklin Swift, a construction worker, has been looking for the right woman after his marriage (not divorced) with Pam Swift. These two souls meet ech other at an apartment building in New York. The two become infactuated with each other that they begin to develop an exciting relationship. Soon the two completely fall for one another. Franklin moves in with Zora. During their time together they experience intamacy, trust, and friendship. However with Franklin's job, money is neever promised. Zora, being a school teacher becomes the breadwinner of the household type situation. There are times when the two go out to restaurants, clubs, and movies. There are also times when each chooses to be with their friends or associates. However, when Franklin's work comes in jeapordy his temper flares and he becomes a different person. Franklin's temper flares in the summer when the two were planning a weekend getaway at Saratoga, NY. Zora was left spellbound at the change of character from Franklin. Now pregnant, Zora has to plan a better financial strategy due to the new mouth arriving. With Franklin not working, and other problems in his family, tesnsions ariste to the pint that Franklin ends up leaving and Zora is left by herself with a young baby son, Jeremiah. Zora able to support herself and the baby, moves on with her life. She orders a restraining order on Franklin and notifies him on the phone. Zora comes home to find her duplex trashed by Franklin. In the time of Franklin's abscence things change. Zora now writes music instead of trying ot sing it. Frankling has gotten the divorce from his wife and is going to college. He comes back to face Zora as a changed man. She, still loving him lets him in and the two conversate. Zora tells Franklin about her plans to move to Toledo where their son can grow in a more natural environment. Franklin decides to wait to tell Zora about the divorce and plans to rejoin her later in the future. These two people just fell in love before they accomplished their life goals.
