Rating: Summary: The Polar Express Review: The Polar Express is a Christmas story. It all begins when a huge train comes, and picks up the narrator(a young boy). The train is full of other children, and it is headed to the North Pole. When they arrive at the North Pole, Santa picks out one of the children to give the first Christmas present too. The young boy is picked, and he asked for one of the bells from the reindeer's harness. When the boy gets on the train, everyone asks to look at the bell, but it was gone. There was a hole in his pocket. The story has a good ending, I leave you here to finish it on your own. The story followed a very good line. I really liked the book, and I though the author did a very good job. Hopefully you decide to get this book and add this wonderful story to your collection of books.Ryan J.
Rating: Summary: A good book especially for people who truly believe... Review: One night as he lay in his bed he listened for the bells of Santa's sleigh. This year though he did not hear bells but the whistle of a train. This train stopped right in front of his window and it was the Polar Express. This train took kids to the North Pole to see Santa give the first present of Christmas. On the Polar Express the children ate candies, and drank hot chocolate as they waited until they reached the North Pole. When they arrived Santa chose one kid to give the first present of Christmas to. The boy asked for a bell from Santa's sleigh, an elf cut one from the reindeers reigns and gave it to him. When he boarded the train the children quickly asked to see his bell, but when he reached in his pocket there was no bell, just an empty hole. The boy was sad he had lost his bell, and sadly went back into his house. On Christmas morning after they had opened all their presents, his sister Sarah found one more little box, and in it was the silver bell Santa had given him. Only he and his sister could hear the bell though, his parents could not. I liked this book because if you really believe in something anything is possible.

Rating: Summary: A Chance Meeting Review: While browsing in a bookstore last December, I stopped in front of a stack of Polar Express books, and picked one up. A lady passing by me with her 10 year old son stopped and asked if I had read it, I said no. The woman held my arm and said "You have to buy it, it is the most wonderful Christmas story my children have ever owned, you just HAVE to get it!" Her son agreed, and they'd had it for years! She went on for some time and was so emotional and insistent, that I promised to buy it. In fact, I was so intrigued by her response to the book that I sat there and read it after she walked away. I was moved to tears at the end, scooped up two copies and a gift set that included an ornament and the cd with the story told by Liam Neeson (sp?). It was a cherished gift to friends and my own 3 and 5 yr old boys. I'm buying it this year for my nephews. She was right.
Rating: Summary: A Holiday delight all year round Review: My own teen-aged children enjoyed this as toddlers, and now I have passed it onto my younger nieces, nephews and friends. I recommend the version with the audio tape, as even the most wonderful book can be tiresome to read night after night, but children never tire of hearing Liam Neeson reading this wonderful story. If you have a special little one that likes trains, it's an even better gift than you could imagine! Enjoy! (and wait for the bell to ring!)
Rating: Summary: Best Family Christmas book ever! Review: In my opinion, this is one of the best children's books ever written by anyone, anywhere, period. The Polar express is about the spirit of Christmas. It recounts a young boys trip to the North Pole on Christmas Eve to receive the 1st gift of Christmas. The story is heartwarming and the illustrations are exquisite. My son is 20, my daughter 16, and to this day our family tradition is to all sit around our tree and read this book just before going to bed on Christmas Eve. For those who yearn for the spirit of Christmas, this is your book.
Rating: Summary: An Absolute Necessity For Anyone's Personal Library Review: Oh, what a beautiful book this is! I've owned this book for over fifteen years, and every year during the holiday season I take it down from the shelf and read it, and I am immediately taken back into time. For the few minutes that it takes me to read this book I once again become a child full of wonder and innocence. I begin to believe in the magic of the holiday season, and yes, for a moment I even believe in Santa Claus again. This is the story of a boy lucky enough to ride The Polar Express to the North Pole on one magical night to see Santa Claus and his elves. While the destination is exciting, the real fun is riding in this train full of children, all dressed in their pajamas and snacking on cookies and milk. The story is beautifully told by Chris Van Allsburg, but the real reason why reading this book is an annual tradition for me is the brilliance of the illustrations. The pictures are painstakingly detailed, especially the beautiful images of the train, the light from the stars in the sky, and the fallen snow. While Santa Claus is incorporated into the story and the illustrations, he is not the focal point. The crux of this book centers around this train, the wintery environment, and the youthful magic that makes it all so special. I am now 22-years-old, and this book is just as compelling for me today as it was when I was 5. I look forward to the day when I will have children of my own and will be able to make it an annual tradition to read this book to them. This book is a must-have for anyone's personal library, especially if you are a parent, a child, or a child-at-heart like me. I give this book the highest of recommendations.
Rating: Summary: Get the gift pack not just the book! Review: This is a lovely story. Both the writing and the illustrations are superior. This is one of those books that is definitely worth owning, and in a hardcover version, not a paperback that will wear and tear. Parents: it is a keeper, one that you will save for years and to read to your future grandchildren. The story is of a boy's journey on a mysterious train, the Polar Express, that takes children (adorned in their pajamas) to the North Pole to Santa's village. I won't spoil the story by telling any more... There are loads of Christmas themed children's books out there for this age range. Many are mediocre or just plain garbage. This book is in the superior category and a "must own". Knowing nothing about this story, both my son and I were drawn to it because of his love of trains. If you don't know the story, just be aware it introduces the idea that not all people believe in Santa Claus. This was the first time my (then) three-year-old learned that not everyone believes, whether they are adults or children. It also explains that as some people grow older they change from a believer to a non-believer. Just know that before reading the story to your child. For us it introduced the idea of non-believing. Another family I know read the book after an older child told this young child there is no Santa Claus, and the book helped deal with the issue of when some believe and some don't believe. The gift pack we purchased had the audio version on CD. Narrator-actor William Hurt's voice is wonderful, slow and flowing...just right to evoke the mood of the story! There is also a CD-ROM for the computer (sold separately), which is a read-aloud story with images that my children watch a handful of times per Christmas season. The gift pack also comes with a Christmas tree ornament. My children are thrilled to have a Polar Express related ornament to adorn our Christmas tree because they love trains and they love this story.
