Rating: Summary: Hmm Review: Everybody seems to think this book was a tragedy -- bad man, nice girl. Sickly sweet, "stereotypical" . . . BUT I really liked this book. I think the reason I liked it better than everyone else has seemed to is because you can look at it kind of in reverse; I really liked Phillip along with Rosamond at the beginning, but unlike Rosamond I continued to like him throughout the whole book. This is not a story about an evil, seductive man and a sweet, innocent girl. This is a story about a man who *almost* wants a conscience but has quite destroyed his own, who really loves Rosamond and is willing to do anything to get her back, even reform; and about a girl so "innocent" that she has no other reply than cold, unfeeling, hurt pride. It *is* like Pride and Prejudice, as an earlier reader mentioned, but the Prejudice never bends even though Pride humbles himself at her feet. I didn't think the ending was exactly tragical, and I certainly didn't think it was sterotypical. If you look at the book with Phillip as the anti-hero, the ending was quite fitting.A good book. If you like Alcott's other thrillers, this one will be no exception.
Rating: Summary: a long fatal love chase Review: its a great book the heroine rosmond is great the era is totally emma like and pride and prejudicewhy oh why did she sell her soul to escape the wrath of her father Louisa may alcott is a great writer she rad her works are great
Rating: Summary: More complex than it seems Review: On the surface it appears to be a rather dramatic, simple tale of a wronged woman, and a pursuing husband. When you look below though, many questions are raised that were real problems in Alcott's day. What rights do women have? Who is the one to take custody of an innocent child? Should a priest remain chaste against his desire? Is it right to wish for adventure and pleasure at the cost of your soul? These are all ideas and questions that bear considering, even in our day, when we think we've solved all these problems. Altogether an intriguing book that does not only involve and absorb, but makes for interesting thought.
Rating: Summary: Delightfully immature beginnings of a huge talent to come! Review: As long as I can remember, I have been a Alcott fan. This book was silly in some ways, but I was not at all disappointed. I enjoyed the characters and the plot, but the real joy to me was to see a favorite author at the beginning of her literary life. While I read this delicate yet earthy romance, I could just see Ms. Alcott depicted as Jo trying to develop her craft while at the boarding house in Little Women. Alcott showed us her romantic side as Jo "fell" for her German teacher-friend who loved books as much as she did; perhaps Jo was writing this little gem!
Rating: Summary: exciting departure from sweetness and innocence Review: Although I agree with other reviews of this book that it's not Louisa May Alcott's best work, I really enjoyed it. I thought that it was well written, the characters nicely developed, and almost a sinful pleasure. It's a romantic story, not really based on reality, that you can lose yourself in. I would reccomend it to fans of Louisa May Alcott who are interested in seeing a different side of her imagination and talent.
Rating: Summary: A Long Fatal Love Chase Review: My book club decided to read this book on a whim, and we all just loved it. It wasn't the most itellectual book we've ever read, but it was a page turner. Unlike today's romance novels, this one had a true innocence and sweetness to it. We were all surprised at the ending too. If you're looking for a Pulitzer Prize winner this isn't it, but if you want a book to spirit you away for a little while then definately read this book.
Rating: Summary: Not "Gone With The Wind" But . . . Review: I don't do romances. Picking this one up to listen to was out of desperation. After plopping it into my car's tape player, I was treated to a delightfully simple tale with an ending I wasn't expecting. No, it's not a prize winner as some moments seem not very realistic, but it's fun. Don't read to deeply into anything and just enjoy yourself. Heck, I don't think this is any worse than most day time soaps. If you want more character and depth, move along. If you want to get lost in a story for awhile, by all means have a listen.
Rating: Summary: Dissapointed Review: Louisa May Alcott is known as one of the greatest literary figures of our time. This title is well deserved from her "Little Women" series, however this particular book was a very dissapointing read to me and other readers I have talked to. It is rumoured that this book was one of her very first novels (I don't know if this is true), and wasn't published until recently. There was proabably a reason for this. It is a very unoriginal story about a girl who is morally perfect, the typical herion during the nineteenth century, who must leave her husband because it turns out he never really married her and was a horribley bad man. So he chases her for awhile and the story ends tragically- typical of a nineteenth century romance novel. Symplistic, stereotypical, and the only really good thing I can say about this book is that it was funny in a quaint, overly dramatic sense.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: the story has so many detail that you are suspened until the very end (at least i was) a great book! not everyone will like it. but i did a lot!
Rating: Summary: LOVE CHASE - FOR JUVENILE MINDS Review: This book by Louisa Alcott is beautifully written, but with a rather trite, banal and simple-minded plot. It, to me, was almost like a fairy tale, with stereotyped characters - the evil prince-charming and the beautiful princess swept off her feet. Unfortunately, I felt the character development was for juvenile minds - and the tale, also. I found it very difficult to maintain interest in the book due to it's simplicity. Comparing this book to, say, Thomas Hardy's JUDE, THE OBSCURE, one can clearly see that Hardy's book is filled with deep, penetrating philosophy and psychological development of characters, while THE CHASE, is very juvenile and not sophisticated enough to hold one's adult attention. On the whole, I would recommend reading something else. Try Hardy!
