Summary: Alan Colmes talks to people not at them
Review: I found this book to be just what the doctor ordered. I think this book is written with conservatives in mind. I think a lot of what Alan Colmes does on Fox News and on the radio is done to present liberal positions to conservatives. This book is a huge success in that direction. Colmes lays out his views in a logical manner. He does display his wit and humor, but he does not make a mockery of those he criticizes. The argument that people on the right like Alan Colmes so therefore he is not a liberal or is just playing the part of a liberal is ridiculous. The only way that you can convince someone of your position is to get them to listen to you. Making fun of them, yelling at them, or worse shutting them out is not going to educate anyone. Colmes may not be the fair haired boy of the left or the right but he is definitely contributing to the body politic by talking to people not at them.
Read all the books put out by liberals but don't exclude Alan Colmes because he behaves like a mature adult and not a raving lunatic.

Summary: (Leftist critique) Alan receives 5 stars on the wimp scale
Review: I just sat down and looked through this book at the bookstore today. I was surprised to see that he actually quoted Noam Chomsky's critique of the US mass media- "Any dictator would admire the obedience and conformity of the US mass media." After seeing this quote, I was curious, because he works for the network that is more subservient to power than any other. But later in the chapter he went on to defend Fox News and say that it reaches out to people of all political views. He later went on to say conservative books outsell liberal books. He didn't mention that Michael Moore's Stupid White Men was the Best Selling book of 2002 and is still on the Amazon best sellers list as we come to the end of 2003. Moore's new book is in the top ten. The best selling conservative book, from his fellow Fox employee Bill Oreilly is sitting at number 16 on the list. I would recommend people read Al Franken's book, which is easily the best selling political book of 2003 and more importantly calls Alan Colmes what he really is-a wuss who can't argue his way out of a paper bag.

Summary: Colmes: Self described moderate
Review: Newt Gingrich is on the back cover of this book giving Colmes accolades! On principle, a true liberal will not be taking this book seriously because of that alone. Self described moderate Colmes writing a book about liberals? Surely, you must be kidding. Hannity hand-picked Colmes (original title of show was "Hannity and liberal to be named later"); you didn't see Bob Novak hand picking Carville and Begala on Crossfire, did you? Compared to Hannity's vitriol and mudslinging in his book, Colme's book is a total wuss of a challenger to his rightwing counterpart (paralleling the TV "rivalry" perfectly). Buy Franken's "Lies" book instead; it will stir up the anger, as a book titled "Left Is Right & Right Is Wrong" should (but doesn't).

Summary: It's a shame
Review: that books such as this outsell far better, yet little known, books such as "The Fight is for Democracy", which better outlines the basis and neccessity for liberal democratic thought post-9/11. Obviously the difference is that Alan Colmes is "famous" - although the reviewer above is absolutely correct that he is not much more than a conservative whipping boy. This is not an outstanding book, but I suppose liberals should at least be glad that a book such as this is finding its way into the hands of Amazon buyers more often than Bill O'Reilly's or Ann Coulter's new books. However, it would be far better if serious books by knowledgeable (yet relatively unknown) liberal thinkers (such as the book referenced above) were more popular. You, dear reader, can do your part by seeking them out on this site and helping them to the top of the best seller list.

Summary: A needed voice
Review: Alan Colmes' debut book is a surprisingly healthy presentation of progressive political philosophies, muscular and articulate. Backed by solid reasoning and careful thought, he lays out a case on topics ranging from the war in Iraq to the role of religion in politics. I didn't agree with everything he said, but I found all of it to be engaging and satisfying. I bought this book the day it came out and read it in two sittings. Don't miss it.

Summary: Look, this guy has no liberal credentials
Review: The editorial review almost got it: no conservative will like this book because he opposes Hannity on their circus show.

But no liberal will like it because Colmes is obviously merely a whipping boy for Hannity, and really does an inconceivably rotten job on TV of presenting anything even remotely resembling a liberal point of view. He knows his place, and he meekly articulates a caricature of a leftist point of view.

In other words, this is a book without an audience. Although neither conservatives nor liberals will read it, conservatives are vastly more likely to do so. Liberals will merely ignore it.

For the genuine liberal position, go to Paul Krugman or Molly Ivins. But not Hannity's designated whipping boy.

Summary: Alan Colmes knows what he's talking about...
Review: And that's far more than I can say about most mainstream liberal authors. We have people like Al Franken and Michael Moore who make a mockery of their platform with ridiculous political smear and a horrible sense of humor.

Where Alan Colmes' Book really wins is in how he lays out his case and how he can actually make arguments with subtlety. He makes a good case, and though I may disagree with him, they're actually well argued with decency.

I would advise all liberals to read this book. Then again, they probably won't, because Colmes works for Fox News, the far left's worst enemy (a news station without a liberal bias? No way!)

Summary: A unique perspective
Review: Alan Colmes couldn't convince me of many of his ideas, but I had fun plodding through his efforts at "Colmizing" readers. He presents often quite logical (even if one-sided) interpretations and maintains a fairly open mind. Bill Clinton most likely won't achieve the "best prez" status he assumes history will give him, and Mr. Colmes's efforts at presenting recent events regarding the former president in the most positive light possible are often rather astonishing. Clinton should appreciate such a devoted follower. What I enjoyed most was his light-hearted and often subtle sarcasm and humor, obviously a throwback to his stand-up comedy days. He has a unique writing style and I enjoyed skimming through this book. Best of all, I wasn't raging in frustration and anger at the end of it as I often have been with other political writers. Showing respect for everyone and still conveying controversial opinions and ideology is an unusual talent.

Summary: Is this a joke or is this a joke?
Review: First off, allow me to commend Colmes on his admirable ability(unlike fellow liberal zealots) to elevate the level of discourse and present his case(even though it's wrong) with a degree of professionalism and decorum that is conspicuously absent with the cretin likes of Al Franken, Michael Moore, and the 9 Dwarves. That being said, I found this book to be a farce of a political effort. When I tried to play devil's advocate and attempt to be persuaded to his side, I found my attempt to be nonsensical, if not impossible.

His chapter titles, although admittedly themselves a vain attempt to push buttons, are enough to make anyone with half of a brain go into a veritable apoplexy: OJ Is Innocent, Jesus Was a Liberal, and, the icing on this not so delicious cake, Clinton, Our Greatest President. Colmes quotes emails from radical zealots and attempts to indocrinate his readers that these people(all of whom somehow misspell routine words)are indicative of all conservatives. Colmes, this is not only gross misrepresentation of conservatism, it is nothing short of malicious demagoguery.
