Rating: Summary: Great book - could not put it down Review: What a great book! What a moving story! In my opinion, Bernard Kerik was one of the best Police Commissioners in New York. His life story is amazing. This book reads really easy, and while reading it, some times I was laughing, and other times I was crying... This is certainly one of the best books I've read in the long time.
Rating: Summary: A profile of integrity and dignity Review: In a time when we need real heroes and the term is so loosely used for so many who are undeserving, and real role models are hard to find, comes Bernard B. Kerik's story, a true, yet reluctant hero and role model. In his easy and unassuming voice, Mr. Kerik relates his story from his rough and humble beginnings (I've discovered that Mr. Kerik and I attended the same elementary school in Paterson, P.S. 13, and that in fact, he was a classmate of my older brother)to his years as a New York City cop, Corrections Commisioner and finally New York City's 40th Police Commissioner, all while he comes to terms with the reasons for his mother's abandonment of him, and searches for the true circumstances of her death. THE LOST SON is an engrossing and truly inspirational story of a young boy who overcame adversity to become a man of great humility and integrity, a gentleman in every sense of the word. This is a book that should not be missed.
Rating: Summary: A Career in Service of Others Review: What makes Bernie Kerik's autobiography credible is his admission of the good with the bad. There are aspects of his life he is not proud of - he acknowledges them, and moves on. What is striking is that the theme of his life and his career is a willingness, a need perhaps, to help others. Unlike other "do-gooders" he actually follows through in a life, as he puts it, in pursuit of justice. In a time of self indulgence and materialistic consumption, it is comforting to know there are still men and women out there who are willing to sacrifice for the rest of us. Being a native New Yorker, he reminds me of so many kids that grew up in my neighborhood, many of whom are now serving in the NYPD and FDNY. Thanks, Bernie, and thanks for sharing and opening up so much.
Rating: Summary: The best book I've read in years. Review: Bernard Kerik's autobiography is both inspiring and insightful. It's exciting to read the tale of a high school dropout from Patterson NJ who master's himself - then all aspects of leadership to become the commissioner of the largest police force in the U.S. I have recommended this book to everyone who will listen. Great for inspiration - and, managerial insight as well.
Rating: Summary: "THE BOOK OF THE YEAR !! IT SHOULD BE ON EVERY TOP TEN LIST" Review: Bernard Kerik is an inspiration for every American! A remarkable true life story about a "BOY" who went from a High School "dropout" to a "MAN" who became the "Police Commissioner" of the largest Police Force in the world. His path to the top could have ended in disaster at any moment. His schools days should have put him on the WRONG side of the law, like so many other problem children growing up in a rough neighborhood. But his challenges in life were only STARTING! Was it his Martial Arts background that helped him to succeed when he should have failed long before reaching the top? Or his undying WILL and COURAGE to except every challenge in LIFE until he proved to HIMSELF he was the BEST at everything that he set his MIND to achieve! Kerik shows what HEIGHTS a person can achieve when other people have FAITH in you and you have the COURAGE to never stop until you REACH the TOP. He must have had "NINE LIVES" to live through everything that he did! There is many more great books left about his life and adventures..I hope he follows up with more of them!! There is at least 4 major movies in this book alone and a sure top TV series ...move over "SOPRANOS".."THE DETAIL" is about loyalty and honor and courage on the RIGHT SIDE OF THE LAW !! It is about the Members of Kerik's Security Detail he hand picked when he became the Commissioner of New York City!! See the picture taken of them on 9/7/01 in the book.....THANK YOU MAYOR GIULIANI FOR HAVING THE COURAGE AND FORESIGHT TO PICK KERIK AS YOUR POLICE COMMISSIONER!!
Rating: Summary: An incredible, inspirational autobiography! Review: Very well-written and entertaining book. As I continued to read, I found myself admiring Kerik more and more with every page. In addition to his impressive resume, his go-getter attitude was inspirational. He didn't allow his high school teacher's biting criticism or the haunting death of his mother discourage him from achieving every goal set he set out to accomplish. Again, a very well-written book. Deserves more than 5 stars, actually!
Rating: Summary: A multi-dimensional saga Review: I found this book to be an extremely well-written autobiograhy. Here's confirmation that one's beginnings and early life don't necessarily determine successes and failures in adulthood. What is significant is that Kerik had a number of positive influences in his life which later led him to have a positive impact on others. Those in management might find enlightenment in incorporating Kerik's leadership principles in their own style.
Rating: Summary: Enough Already Review: Please. Could this man praise himself or ex-Mayor Giuliani any more? While Mr. Kerik's story is inspirational in some respects, the constant pats on the back that he gives himself are a real turn off. I got the message after the initial string of self-compliments ... this is a great man doing great things. There's no need to hear it ad nauseum. Yes, and he also lets us know what a great man Giuliani is. Maybe. Maybe not. This book is filled with all sorts of macho stuff with the forces of good fighting the forces of evil. Kerik has filled the pages with a lot of interesting stories and has clearly established himself as a superman on the side of the good.
Rating: Summary: A Book of Successive Challenges Review: Bernard Kerik's book The Lost Son is a book of numerous challenges. The search for his mother's murderer, warden at the Passaic County Jail, his experiences in Saudi Arabia, the politics involved in promotions in the NYPD, his relationship with his son Joe, the cleaning up of the powder keg that is Riker's Island, and the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11th all make this a book that moves from one problem to another and the author's ability to meet the challenge and solve whatever comes his way including his most recent as New York City's Police Commissioner. People didn't believe he would last to be successful at Riker's Island, especially someone who had no college degree. However, the jail was littered with college degree failures who were unable to maintain control of the place. The book is over 350 pages, but it will be a quick read due to your heightened interest.
