Summary: A fanatasy to treasure
Review: I first read this book 35 years ago and it has remained a firm favourite. Its fantasy is believable and enchanting. The story is able to stress the triumph of good over evil without horror or prissiness. Other great E Goudge children's books are 'The Valley of Song' and Henrietta's House. I would love to find good copies of both.

Summary: A journey back to childhood
Review: Although it is about a quarter of a century since I last read this book, it has ALWAYS been one that I love. I've been trying hard to track down another book by Elizabeth Goudge, but with no luck..."Henrietta's House" I want to give it to a friend's daughter (Henrietta). Can anyone help?

Summary: One Of My Favorites!
Review: I read this book for the first time when I was about 11. I loved it... especially the way I could see every thing in my minds eye. After finishing it, I tried to convince one of my sisters to read it. After some coaxing, she did, and loved it as much as myself. I still read this book occaisionally, when I need a book that will make me forget about my surroundings. I hope to continue reading it for years!

Summary: Wonderful, superb! What more do we need?
Review: It's wonderful! Superb! Who wouldn't like this story. What I'd like to know is why the reading level is listed as Baby-Preschool. I'm fifteen, and I still love this book!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The BEST book
Review: I read this book when I was 12 and it instantly became one of my favourites. It's got everything: excitement, adventure and mystery along with an aura of romance to it. This book should be required reading and it is the sort of book I will read again and again.

Summary: one of my favourite books
Review: This is the first book I read from cover to cover in one sitting!I was 13, the same age as Maria, and immediately wanted to BE Maria. I wanted to live in the manor house, eat the wonderful meals, and have all those wonderful pets! And of course, being 13, I wanted to marry Robin, the hero!I have a 1st edition that is my pride and joy. The illustrations by C. Walter Hodges are a delight and only add to the beauty of this book. I can't wait to present this book to my daughters when they grow up!

(A question;why does Amazon list the reading level for this book as "baby-preschool??)

Other wonderful childrens books by Goudge include, "Smokey House" , and "The Sister of Angels"

Summary: Super book!
Review: This is one of the most enchanting books ever written. I discovered it at about age 14 and have read it several times since then. It's got everything -- magic, love, the romance of the past, a spunky, but totally human, heroine...I can't wait to share this book with my own kids when they're old enough.

Summary: Absolutely Magical
Review: I checked this book out of my elementary school library many years ago and have never forgotten it. This book brings you into a magical world that you deperately want to live in. I still have my hardback copy that my parents purchased for me after much begging. It is a treasured part of my book collection and as an adult, I still occasionally indulge in its reading.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Predictable, but definately worth your time
Review: Honestly, I just bought this book because my hero, J.K. Rowling, cites it as one of her all-time favorites. After reading it, I understand why that is. The story itself grabs you from the beginning and pulls you into the stunningly-constructed world. Every detail is described, from the meals to the scenery, everything. The ONLY complaint that I had, is that sadly it's rather predictable. It'd be great to read to a child, or for the young-at-heart.
