Rating: Summary: My favourite book of all time Review: I was stunned to find recently that J.K. Rowley named "The Little White Horse" as her favourite book when she was growing up. (I'm in the best of company.) I had no idea the book was still in print and am about to order a new edition from yourselves, not because I don't have a copy, but because I would like to preserve my old one in reasonable condition - insofar as that's possible, as I read and re-read it myself over several years. My 9-year-old has just read and loved the book. I am now reading it to my 5-year-old, who is trying to guess some of the mysterious links between characters which build up so dramatically throughout the story. I am not surprised, now, that I enjoyed it so much. Not 'til we read "Harry Potter" recently did I enjoy again such a plot development, or such delightful, brave, and unusual characters. This book deserves to be much better known. If it took filming it to make that happen, then so be it.
Rating: Summary: A True Classic... Review: I have been looking for this book for twenty years as I gave away a copy printed in the 1940's. Maria is the perfect template for all young women: brave, thinking, intelligent, adventurous. The setting is an unforgettable feast for the imagination, and I am so grateful to have this book in my possession once more, except the drawings were missing. But the language and the clear descriptions were all I needed to bring me back to Moonacre. A book for every young girl's library. As for a movie, well, I would be happy if it didn't happen.
Rating: Summary: Enchanting Review: I first found this book in a pile of junk in my friends room, she said I could have it, and after reading the opening paragraph I was entraced. Now for a book to so enthrall a 13 year old is a feat no ordinary author could accompish. Two years later it still is a favourite of mine, I must read it 4 times a year. I was happily reminded of Francis Hoedgson Burnett's "The Secret Garden". And I will always be jealous of Maria because of Her "dog" Wrolf.
Rating: Summary: Wonderfull!:) Review: I first read this book when I was eight and since then it has been my favorite! This fairy tale tells that when hope and courage come together wonderfull things happen.
Rating: Summary: Lovely Review: I bought this book a while back, it was one of the first books that got me hooked onto fantasy. While this book was fantasy, it had a classical English style that made it seem more like Jane Eyre than some of the modern fantasy books. Also, I loved this book because it was realistic; it may have been fantasy but it didn't try to PROVE it was by stuffing dragons, unicorns, elves and fairies down your gullet every minute. It was a charming and lovely book.
Rating: Summary: My life began a transformation with "Little White Horse" Review: When I was about 14, I chose "Little White Horse" at the library because I thought it was about a horse and I was mad for horses. As I began to read, it became evident that this was no horse story, but I was entranced and couldn't put it down. Elizabeth Goudge's writing style is such that one can easily visualize the salmon-colored geraniums, the special foods included in Marmaduke Scarlet's repasts, or Robin's brown curling hair that twisted like a drake's tail in the back. Robin . . . I fell so in love with Robin . . . so much so that my son carries his name all these years later. This book portrays that loveliness that exists in this world if one will but look and see and so is wonderful for children and adults alike. "Little White Horse" opened the world of Elizabeth Goudge to me, a world of enchanting, life-enhancing detail. To the customer who wrote from Christchurch, N.Z., "Henrietta's House" was published in the U.S. under the title "The Blue Hills" and will be available through Amazon.com this September!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful imagery, excitement, and use of the English langua Review: All the elements to enchant a young reader eager for adventure, fantasy, and possibilities. One gets to use the imagination to actually see the manor house, the seaside village, the inhabitants of the place from the lady caretaker to the lofty dog lion. Suitable for the good reader from grade four and up.
Rating: Summary: Charming and enchanting Review: I first read this book when I was about 11, and I have never forgotten it. As an adult, I searched for a copy for several years before finding it here on Amazon. The book is everything I remember, and I look forward to sharing it with my daughter when she's older. I hope that this book is reissued with illustrations and maps, and brought back to the popularity it so richly deserves. With reservation, I would also like to see a movie version, though NOT a Disney treatment, but instead something more English and "Ivory & Merchant".
Rating: Summary: I love this book. Review: When I was growing up every spring my mother, my sisters and I would sit on my mothers bed and she would read to us a chapter a night. My mother always called me her little Maria because I looked so much like her. Now that I'm older I still read it every year. I would like to get another copy of the book for my niece to have when she's older. I think they should make a Disney movie out of it.
Rating: Summary: One of the best remembered books I read as a child. Review: I can remember reading this book as a child and being very impressed, I want to re-visit my childhood and read it again!
