Rating: Summary: The Second Foundation at Last! Review: In the creation of his Foundation, Seldon also created a Second Foundation, whose location was only vaguely referred. Its nature as uncertain as its location, finally are we given a view of this entity. As in the previous Foundation books, this is not a single story but two individual stories. The first story deals with the Mule, the Foundation-conquering mutant, and his search for the Second Foundation, the only thing barring him from universal domination. Relentless in his search, an encounter is finally made, which is incredibly well-written and suspenseful. Truly an excellent work of SF. The second story takes place not terribly long after the first, and depicts yet another search for the elusive Second Foundation. The stakes do not seem to be as high, but the eventual effect greater. The Foundation has come to be complacent with regard to a certainty that its success is assured, especially with another Foundation out there keeping watch, as they believe. Consequently, a malaise has settled over the citizenry, who believe there is no urgency to anything. Some see this failing and seek to locate or disprove the existence of the other Foundation to either reinforce the belief or stimulate some activity. And boy do we get taken on a fun ride. Always keeping us guessing, as the clues lead us this way and that, it seems that Isaac always has the last laugh, as he keeps yanking the rug from under us. As with the other preceding books in this series, I won't waste much space lauding the quality therein, for there has been enough said that I could not really be original. But this entire series is highly recommended for any who enjoy true science fiction. Happy reading!
Rating: Summary: The search for the Second Foundation. Review: In this third volume of the first Foundation series (originally consisting of two stories published in a magazine in 1948 and 1949), survivers of the First Foundation, as well as the Mule, hunt for the Second Foundation. Asimov later published a sequel, "Foundation's Edge" in 1982. I've now read this series twice (I first read them in the early 1960s). But, my father has read them ten times. It just shows how popular the series has been. In Part I, titled "Search by the Mule," five years have passed after the end of the events described in "Foundation and Empire." The Mule (now, in effect, ruler of the Galactic Empire) goes in search of the Second Foundation which he regards as a serious threat to his rule. The Second Foundation, which is quite vulnerable, has to find some way to dissuade him and return the galaxy to the path outline by psychohistory. In Part II, titled "Search by The Foundation," the history begins about 95 years after the end of Part I. A small group of individuals in the First Foundation, including an electroneurophysiologist, come to the conclusion that the Second Foundation's ability to control people's minds is repellant. They attempt to locate the secret center of the Second Foundation. At the same time, a warlord on another planet seeks to defeat the First Foundation in battle.
Rating: Summary: Coool Review: Nice Book recomend 2 read all the books before that one
Rating: Summary: Masterful Close(?) Review: Of course, we all know by now that the Trilogy was just the beginning of the Foundation story. We had prequels and sequels but these three remain the core of the saga. In FOUNDATION AND EMPIRE we were introduced to the Mule, a mutant with mental powers so great he could change the course of history. Since Seldon had set up two Foundations - one known, one unknown - it would be a catastrophe if the Mule ever discovered the location of the secret one. This is a tale of innocence, of a 14-year old girl (Arkadia) and her friendship with a man we come to discover is the Mule. The final battle - as in all books of this type - correct all wrong and allows us to discover that the location of the Second Foundation was at "Galaxy's End" - the center of the galaxy, Trantor, where Seldon had resided. The real trick now is creating the alternate robot stories that would intertwine and eventually unite with the Foundation Series creating a new entity.

Rating: Summary: Good but not Great Review: Second Foundation is the best of the original trilogy, but is not up to Asimov's best. He captures the sweep of his 'history' well in this book but manages to say in 100 words what he could have said in 60 if I, Robot is an example. This remains a must read for any real SF fan.
Rating: Summary: Is the Seldon Plan in ruins? Review: Second Foundation is the conclusion to the original Foundation trilogy and focuses on the events following the Mule's conquest of the First Foundation. Can the Seldon Plan for a peaceful Second Empire recover from the severe damage inflicted by the mutant Mule? The first part of the book takes place soon after the awesome ending of Foundation and Empire and describes how the Mule is finally thwarted. The "final battle" with the Mule was somewhat anti-climactic but still made a good ending to the first part. The second part takes place a couple decades later and examines the First Foundation's search for the mysterious and hidden Second Foundation. This part comprises most of the novel and takes much more concentration to understand everything that's happening. There are several major twists throughout this second part so you must read carefully if you want to try to figure things out before Asimov reveals the answers! Essentially, the Second Foundation is desperately trying to get the Seldon Plan back on track (after it was bent by the Mule) and is forced to manipulate key individuals, something which was never done before. However, some smart people in the First Foundation figure out that individuals are being manipulated and deduce that the Second Foundation is at fault. So the search is on to find and destroy the Second Foundation before too many people are in their control. Second Foundation ties up virtually all loose ends introduced in the first two books and is a superb read. As with many Asimov novels, the last chapter has a major twist (actually, two) that gets you flipping back to see if it makes sense in the context of what happened before. As usual, it does. :-) I recommend reading Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation before reading the original trilogy. Now it's time for me to read Foundation's Edge and I can't wait!
Rating: Summary: Excellent. Storytelling at its best. Review: The final part of the Foundation Trilogy shows the intricate and complex plot devised by the Second Foundation to overthrow the Mule, included in which are the exploits of a runaway girl, and a political witch hunt on the capital planet Terminus. A worthy conclusion.
Rating: Summary: Stupendous imagination of a mere human Review: The Foundation series are the best Sci-fi novels I've read or ever will read again. I enjoyed it so much that I read it several times...I salute Asimov for his fantastic imagination
Rating: Summary: Foundation's Glory Review: The Foundation series is the best sci-fi series of all time, and the progression through the plot of the Seldon Plan is amazingly complex yet simple. Second Foundation is an amazing book that leaves you guessing what will happen next, and often things you never expected but look back and ask why you didn't see it. It is an excellent book with an ending that will shock and surprise you much like Ebling Mis.
