Rating: Summary: Morrell stumbles, then falls flat on his face Review: I have been a Morrell fan for a long time. While I do believe his best work is behind him (First Blood, Last Reveille, and the classic Testament), his more recent works, while flawed, are still a cut above the ordinary. In Double Image, however, Morrell aims for Hitchcockian romantic adventure and comes out sounding like Judith Krantz. No, wait a minute, there's no need to insult Ms. Krantz. I apologize. Never in my life have I read such jaw-droppingly lame sentences in one book. Just try saying this dialogue out loud then you will realize how poorly written it is, not to mention completely aritificial: nobody on this green earth talks like this. Overly-dramatic, patently sappy and highly superficial are the nicest decriptions for his pathetic lead, Mitch Coltrane (the falsity of the name itself prophesizes the shallowness of the book). Coltrane is a shallow, whining putz whose rear end John Rambo would have kicked through the stratosphere while screaming: "Get over yourself!" In an effort to come across as sensitive, Morrell has produced a corny melodrama that plays like a desperate attempt to paint a happy smile on Patricia Highsmith. Morrell's book also displays a callow disregard for women in general and a fairy-tale-ish undermining of the very serious crime of stalking: women (read: damsels in distress) need hulking men with guns (read: knight errants) to save them from obsessive psychopaths (read: marauding hordes). Please. All of these faults and I haven't even commented on the book's literary no-no's: two completely disparate storylines and coincidences that would have made Harry Stephen Keeler squirm. I finished this tome only out of loyalty to Mr. Morrell whose body of work will one day be measured by almost everything leading up to this claptrap.
Rating: Summary: disappointing Review: I have enjoyed so many of Morrell's books but was let down by this one. The lack of focus was almost unbearable. I finished the book feeling very unsatisfied.
Rating: Summary: It is a compelling read! Review: I have never read David Morrell's books before and this is my first introduction to it. It was very interesting and I had a hard time putting it down at times. And I love how it was two stories (or two cases) in the book ~~ two chases for Coltrane to live through!Coltrane, a photographer, is caught photographing mass burial grounds in Bosnia and endured through one hell of which he survived. Then as he thought he was free to enjoy life again ~~ he runs into a reknown photographer who commissioned him to take pictures like his first famous series. Then Packard died ~~ leaving behind a mystery about the most beautiful face in his collection. Coltrane ends up trying to solve that mystery only to find himself in danger. It was a fairly quick read ~~ full of twists and turns! Just when you thought you solved the dilemma ~~ you were taken for a surprise and compelled to read more. If you are into mysteries, this book is a great one! It's great for those beach reads too ~~ not too dark on the mind or spirits either ~~ but not that slow ~~ so pick it up and enjoy! 4-25-03
Rating: Summary: I found this book excellent. The review misses the point. Review: I have read most of David's other books and found them fantastic. My favorite is "The Fifth Profession". I am a police officer and greatly enjoyed that story. This book though was read in a night. I was unable to put it down. I found the change of plot exciting and unexpected. I hope David puts out more books just like this one.
Rating: Summary: Uh-oh Review: I love David Morrell, I have read everyone of his books. The action, the characters, the spy habits. But this is not like his other books. Does David Morrell question his desire to write spy novels anymore? This book is not what I was expected at all! It totally lacked Morrell's famous tension. Foremost, I was disappointed with the trashy themes, I had to skip ahead several times because it got so graphic. Is he going through a mid-life crisis? Well get over it, love your wife, and go back to writing exciting action novels.
Rating: Summary: It was so gripping that I ripped the cover. Review: I love Morrell's books and this one is no exception. My only complaint was too much sex. I mean come on, less sex, more intrigue please. Overall it was great though.
Rating: Summary: Hitchcockian intrigue Review: I think it's great that David Morrell is exploring more avenues of fiction, though I still believe that fast paced novels are what he excels at. I think that readers who did not enjoy the book should reread it and see what Morrell was trying to accomplish. This novel is not a hunter-hunted novel, but is a novel that explores the fearfully dark corridors of the human mind.
Rating: Summary: not classic literature, but super-suspenseful anyway Review: I think some of the reviewers here are being awfully tough on what I thought was a very entertaining book. The double plot structure was a little weird - I kept thinking that the first villain was going to pop up again after death like some Friday the 13th nightmare, but once the second plot kicked in, I was enthralled by the story. The twists all surprised me, and it made some kind of twisted sense at the end. I had a good time!!
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I thoroughly enjoyed the unexpected twists this story took. I was not disappointed!
Rating: Summary: A joy to read. Intelligent, fast paced. A must read!!! Review: I thouroughly enjoyed this book. It's a thrill ride like few I've read A real page turner. Morrell's style shines in this one. I recommend it to anyone who loves thrill rides (and has a strong stomach) It makes you think and put things together. It also shocks you over and over again.
