Summary: Readable, but
Review: A recent convert to Morrell I bought this book in eager anticipation to be left disappointed. Two distinct story lines that I felt never linked sucessfully left me with lasting impression that the book could have worked but did not.

Summary: Below par for the great author
Review: Admittedly it has been some time since I poured through this latest offering from David Morrell, but I'll throw in my two cents anyway. Of all the Morrell I have read this was my least favorite. I didn't connect with the motivations of the main character at all, and the storyline was way beyond belief from someone who generally skirts this line thin but successfully.

Summary: Could be better.
Review: After reading Morrell's Fifth Profession, Covenant of the Flame, and Brotherhood of the Rose, I was expecting something like THOSE from Double Image! The story started out okay: Coltrane's escape from Bosnia. When it got to the middle, however, I began to wonder what Ilkovic had to do with Packard's death and Coltrane's new project. Then a new twist emerged with Tash. It seemed that these were two very distinct plots which Morrell could've probably developed in two separate novels. Sure, Morrell tried to interrelate these two issues, but I'm afraid he wasn't very successful in doing so. Nonetheless, the ending was superb. There was once more a touch of manipulation and conspiracy like in the Fifth Profession: definitely Morrell.

Summary: Give the man a break, people!
Review: All right. So the book was disappointing to a lot of you. A clunker. You want every book to be his best? If you liked his last 5 books, why do you want your money back? Take a few deep breaths, relax, and wait for Morrell's next book. Now, if that one's bad too, I say we go over to his house and water his bushes. But first we wait...bide our time...

Summary: Comments about my new novel
Review: Although my new novel, DOUBLE IMAGE, doesn't imitate the stories I'm about to mention, it is very much in the tradition of REBECCA, LAURA, PORTRAIT OF JENNY, and VERTIGO inasmuch as the hero of each of these is obsessed with the hauntingly beautiful image of a departed woman. It also has a similarity to PSYCHO inasmuch as the plot switch a third of the way into the film (we think it's about Janet Leigh stealing money from her employer and then are shocked to learn that it's about something far more dangerous) is something I had in mind when I structured the novel. Hence the title, DOUBLE IMAGE, which not only evokes the eerie effect that a photographic double exposure can produce but also hints at a double twist in the narrative. I wanted the reader to think that the story was going in one direction and then to be taken in a surprising and disturbing other direction. In that regard, I think the Booklist review misses the point. This book is packed with story. Since I've been hammered so hard, I think it's fair to counter the review with a quote from James Ellroy (L.A. CONFIDENTIAL) who calls DOUBLE IMAGE "a sizzling thriller that deftly and powerfully evokes the twisted scope of L.A. today. The story grabs you by the short hairs of your soul and brain and does not let go. It's a rich and obsessive novel." The book is meant to send a shiver through you. I hope you enjoy it.

Summary: Okay; kept me turning the pages but left me unsatisfied
Review: As other reviews have stated, this book is basically two novellas very loosely tied together by an aging legendary photographer and the influence he has had on the central character's life and work. It was good for a bit of escapist reading, but left me wanting something meatier.

Summary: Thoroughly disgusting!
Review: Coletrane, the main character in Double Image, is as annoying a character as is conceivable. During the majority of events in this book, he usually is found whining, being scared, and thinking almost exclusively about himself and only himself; for example, he deserts the woman who put her life in danger for him and barely thought twice about it. The course of this book is saddeningly predictable. In addition, it seems to be about 4 books all crammed into one...first, a terrorist stalker, then suddenly, a mysterious picture of a woman, then next, a vixen with 60 boyfriends and a thing against men. And throughout the entire book, the inconsistencies in plot and minor details all add up to a completely unpleasurable reading experience. Buy this book only if you'd like a good laugh at idiocy.

Summary: This is not David Morrell's greatest work to date.
Review: David Morrell deviates from his normal style of writing in Double Image. The book begins as a promising piece with gripping imagery and text, but quickly deteriorates into a book more befitting Tami Hoag. Morrell has too much going on at once and lacks cohesion. I look forward to his next work. Allow me to add that David Morrell is one of the best in his genre, and this minor setback will not restrain his creative edge.

Summary: ordinary
Review: David Morrell has a tendency to roller-coaster the successes and non-successes of his books. Some are great and some are bad. It's hard to maintain a consistency in greatness and should he be able to do so, then I can stop believing in God.

I finished the book in one day. Not because the book was overly exciting, but both stories were short enough to read quickly. For the effort that I put in to finish the 500 or so pages, I did not feel "gyped" for the money I paid for the book. I just felt that the stories were too short to develop the characters well. I think that this contributed to the "floppiness" of the book as seen by the other readers. I liked it. But not as much as THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE ROSE "series" and Rambo.

I'll look forward to his next book.
