Summary: Finally something different
Review: This is an excellent book that finally breathed some life into a dying genre for me. It has an intresting idea of an alternate history (something Card excells at, read Pastwacth: the redemption of christopher columbus.) Also the magic system is original and intresting. Although Card could have went into a little more detail with it.

Summary: An original and unique mythos
Review: Finally, an original concept in fantasy. It's very refreshing to see an author craft and explore a unique mythos that doesn't draw upon Tolkein or the Nibelungleid. "It doesn't stink of high elves" ... P.M.

The tale is fast past and keeps the reader hooked!

Summary: underwhelming
Review: I'm not sure this book deserves all the acclaim it has gotten, both here and in other reviews. It is a little different, but it is painfully slow and seems to be made up of smaller segments, each of which don't really make any contribution to the overall plot. The characters are quite thin and the course of the book is relatively predictable. I give it a thourough "ho-hum."

Summary: Suprisingly Good for a Science Fiction
Review: I usually cringe when I think about Trekkies on the Sci Fi channel. This book was pretty cool. The fact that the main character in the expository phase entered the conclusion was absolute genius, although "Taleswapper" was a pretty lame character. Be sure to read the rest of the books in this series.

Summary: The Great American fantasy novel
Review: Since everyone kept recommending this series to me, I started reading, and alas! I haven't disappointed. The first book at least easily beats most of the modern fantasy. Or is it fantasy at all? I suppose this is what they call a Great American Novel, even though magic works and George Washington gets executed. Card's way of handling religion and metaphysics is really fascinating. The reason I don't give the book 5 stars is that there are some minor faults. Maybe the uncriticizing praise of ol' American virtues is the most significant one. Still a good read, and I'm now heading for the rest of the series.

P.S. My favourite poet William Blake makes a surprising appearance in the book, as one of its main characters. Thumbs up for that!

Summary: A VERY THOUGHTFUL FANTASY
Review: I HAD JUST COMPLETED ENDER, MY FIRST CARD READING. IT WAS EXCELLENT, SO I THOUGHT I WOULD START A SECOND ANTHOLOGY BY CARD. I READ THE REVIEWS AND PICKED THIS. IT WAS A GREAT READ. I WAITED UNTIL I FINISHED IT BEFORE BUYING THE REST OF THE SET. I WOULD RECOMMEND IT FOR TWO REASONS: 1) IT WILL MAKE YOU THINK SCOTT MAKES A POINT ABOUT TRUTH IN THIS BOOK THAT REALLY HIT HOME. 2) THE CHARACTERS. THEY ARE VERY WELL IMAGINED AND YOU FIND YOURSELF CARING FOR SOME, AND PITYING OTHERS. ONE 'NEGATIVE' IT SEEMS SCOTT LIKES THE TALE OF A SPECIAL CHILD, THERE IS A LITTLE TOO MUCH SIMILARITY BETWEEN ALVIN AND ENDER. SO BEWARE YOU MAY FEEL A LITTLE DEJE VU'

Summary: A Wonderful, Wonderful Book!
Review: This story is simply wonderful. This is my favorite fantasy novel of all time. Not only is it an enthralling and entertaining tail of a boy growing up in a magical America, but it has the power to change the way you see the world. Orson Scott Card does not scimp on his characters nor on the meaning behind his words. I definetly recommend this book!

Summary: Read this series!
Review: this will end up being at least a 7 book series. 5 of them are written to date. This first book is a great read. I give it 4.5 stars (5 is rare).

Summary: This book introduced me into sci-fi/fantasy literature.
Review: This book is the beginning of my addiction to reading sci-fi and fantasy books. And I always come back to the Alvin Maker Series. There is no equal joy reading stories of this kind, and I think this is the only one of its kind. It touches the heart and staggers the imagination. Highly recommended. Indeed!

Summary: One of the best I've ever read!
Review: This is definitely one of the best books I've ever read. From the moment I picked it up I could not put it back down until I had finished it. I recommend it to all readers, as well as the others in the series.
