Rating: Summary: Should have left out the James Bond stuff Review: I was looking for something along the lines of The Odessa File and The Boys of Brazil and picked this up. I had seen stories about Rudolph Hess not really being Rudy afterall, his peculiar death (suicide, yeah right!) and the "Conspiracy" among the Allies to keep hidden something that would embarrass England, America and Russia. So this book follows up on this concept and while it starts out good, it soon resorts to gimicrky with a Dr. Evil/Blowfeld style master criminal running SPECTRE-like orgranization of neo-nazis seeking to take over the world, ending with a high-tech climax right out of a James Bond movie (I could even hear the background music from the raid on Ft. Knox in Goldfinger as the Good Guys attacked the villian's secret stronghold to thwart his evil plans at the last minute). I was hoping for something more intellectual and low key a la Forsyth or even Ludlum. This book would be great if it was re-written...and reduced by half
Rating: Summary: Mindboggling suspense , you can't pass, this one up! Review: I've read tonnes of books during my life, but this is the only one I've bothered to write an online review about, which just goes to show what a great read this was. I just regret the fact that he's got only 3 books to his credit right now, because it's tough for me to find something else that can match this. Highly recommended to WW2 fanatics. High-paced thrilling hell of a read will keep you up all night, and wondering about it long after you've finished.
Rating: Summary: GREG ILES IS THE MAN Review: im 15 years old and this is my second iles book. i read black cross first and was just blown away by it. it was action packed and the characters are so very real. this book is just as good or even better than black cross. i love how he mixes facts with fiction and in the end is a crazy story with tons of action yet still with facts and opinion. greg iles is , i think, the most under rated writer out there. with such spectacular works as this and black cross he should be well recognized throughout the reading world. id have to say greg iles is my favorite author out there now (along with tom clancy and jack higgins) this author would be for people who like books by such authors as jack higgins and tom clancy. even if you dont like those authors give his books a try. i gaurantee you will enjoy his work.
Rating: Summary: History comes to life. Review: It is very obvious that Greg Iles knows his WWII history. In this fast paced, heart pounding thriller, Iles not only gives some very plausable reasons that Hess may have flown to England, but addresses the theory that he may not have been a prisoner at Spandau.
From the first page, this book never lets you rest. I recommend wearing your seat belt while reading this one
Rating: Summary: A real page-turner! Review: It's 1987. Gorbachev is in power. The cold war is rapidly winding to a close. So what does it matter that an old man, the last of the Nazi war criminals, is found dead in Spandau prison? Well, it turns out that no fewer than eight governmental organizations (American, British, East and West German, South African, Israeli, Libyan and Russian) have a vested interest the death of the prisoner formerly known as Rudolf Hess - and it all revolves around a nine-page document that is found by an honest West German police officer. Most of the intricate plot is set up in the first third of the book, and the rest just traces the story of the Spandau papers to its highly complex and inexorable conclusion. If I had a complaint, it'd be that some characterization is sacrificed in order to keep the plot advancing - but I wouldn't have made the book any longer than its 700 paperback pages, either. To Iles' credit, there's never any trouble keeping his large cast of characters straight. Great beach read!
Rating: Summary: WOW - COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN..... Review: MY first Greg Iles book and certainly not my last. I loved this....A little history, a lot of action, non stop, fast paced, great story, believeable....
Rating: Summary: FANTASTIC historical fiction... Review: Rudolf Hess...did he REALLY commit suicide as recorded by history in the Spandau prison in the late 80's? He reportedly hung himself. The man reportedly couldn't even raise his arms above his shoulders due to severe joint problems...and yet this old man finally did himself in...or DID he? The premise here is just plain GREAT. Mr. Iles has created an impossible-to-put-down thriller based upon REAL facts and actual instances and ties them together seamlessly. I have ALWAYS enjoyed the way Jack Higgins could take a real event from WWII and tie it in with a fictional event and pull it off...well the heir to the throne that Higgins dominated in the 70's has arrived, and Greg Iles IS his name. This is a large book, and it's totally filled with intrigue and suspense. Did Rudolf Hess actually live past the War and is he living in South America? What do the Spandau papers contain? What of the failed mission that the 'real' Hess supposedly undertook at the beginning of the war...was it REALLY him? Why was it he never recognized his own children after the war? Rudolf Hess was a WWI war hero and received a battle wound...however the man reportedly to BE Hess in Spandau Prison did not have that scar... Too good to be true? Well many of these are true facts and that is where Iles takes you into speculative fiction, and he does it very well. He almost gets you to believe that maybe, just maybe his version of what happened IS the real thing. From a manhunt that spans Europe to Africa, 'Spandau Phoenix' really IS an incredible adventure thriller of the highest order. Better than anything Jack Higgins ever produced (pretty high praise, dontcha think?). Give it a shot, sit back and enjoy. Iles manages to give us an adrenaline rush that is totally satisfying and makes you sad as the book comes to a close. Simply put: 'Spandau Phoenix' is absolutely wonderful.

The story finally screeches to a conclusion. The ending is dynamic. This is without question an exciting book. You will find it hard to put down.Buy it,you will love it.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant, fast paced, scorcher. Review: Rudolph who? Who knows. The story is sooooooo fantastic that you will have a hard time distinguishing reality and fantasy in this amazing work of fiction. This is easily one of my favorite books of all time. Iles paints brilliant characters who move quickly in an intricately woven plot. How does the "evil spirit of Facism" continue 40 years after the war is over? This book is convincing in it's presentation of this idea (and many other subtle and not so subtle political ideologies) that will have you thinking and rethinking your views of the current geopolitical scheme of the world. There is nothing negative to say about this book except that it ends... Absolutely brilliant. Kevin Hogan, ...
Rating: Summary: Did I miss something Review: Spandau Phoenix certainly lived up to all reviews, it was excellent, however, pages 633 to 664 were missing from my book. What was even more frustrating and left me feeling empty was the lack of any mention of Hauer, Hans, and Ilse. All of the persons on the plane were never mentioned. Did it crash??? Am I missing other pages of this book? Someone please respond.
