Summary: Schmaltzy
Review: And what does schmaltzy mean? Corny? Sentimental in a pathetic or bathetic manner? All of these. I couldn't stand it after a while.

I think I got to where Jackie's experimental cancer treatment has failed and she comes home to appreciate her children one last time.

This confronting death through cancer, "before her time," is instructive, possibly, but that's the only real positive.

Otherwise, this story is literally sickening. It may not give you cancer, but it will turn your stomach. Luke is a creep and a wimp. What any woman saw in him.......well, I guess he is a representative American male after all....and most of them do seem to bond, at least temporarily, with some woman. Many do precisely what Luke has done: grind up one woman and then look for a younger edition. Why Isabel would put up with a stiff like this, I just don't know. Surely she could have found someone her own age and make a normal life with her own children.

Anna seems like a real brat, and Isabel seems to think so, too, for the most part, although, good-hearted stepmom that she is, she does try her best to make friends with the little poseur.

Ben may be the only real person in this sad story, because as a pre-puberal youth he really isn't expected to vary much from his script, and he doesn't.

Well, sorry, but I agree with the other few nay-sayers here on this site: this one's not a tear-jerker, but it does jerk something: you. Diximus.

Summary: is this movie for real?
Review: As a divorced and still single mom with four kids (who have a stepmom), I submit this review for the movie, Stepmom: This is NOT the way most families area in real life. The ex-wife has this gorgeous house, the dad is a successful lawyer, his girlfriend is a fashion photographer. Get real, here. My 17 year old daughter and I watched this and kept saying, "Well, it would be nice if this is how things WERE...." In reality, I bet it is pretty rare for an ex-wife to have any kind of real relationship with the girlfriend/new wife. Especially if the girlfriend was the cause of the divorce. I could go onbut I guess I am saying that I got really sick of Susan Sarandon looking strained and Julia Roberts being so bubbly and Ed Harris was just a nerd (and I nornmally like all these people!) And did anyone else think Harris and Sarandon were just a little OLD to have these young kids?

Summary: Does a person have to be dying to act decently?
Review: As a stepmother I've lived through most of this book first hand. I found myself feeling angry with a lot of it. Why does the mother have to be dying to behave decently? The message would have been more powerful if the characters learned how to get along for the kid's sake in spite of their problems. It left the impression if the mother was healthy she would have dragged out a court battle to get the children away from the father. Of course, that is more realistic from my experience but with more stepfamilies every year we could use a positive message. That we really can solve our problems in order to help the children grow into healthy adults. I felt the message of the story could have been more uplifting & beneficial for stepfamilies if it had a different ending.

Summary: A must read book for a mom as well as stepmom.
Review: Being a stepmom is a real rough job. People automatically assume that you are some kind of home wrecker and end up not giving you a chance when all you want is to love and be loved! I love my husband and everything about him, even his 6yr. old daughter. But it sure is hard not to take things personally. I saw myself and stepdaughter so many times in the book and it made me feel like I wasn't alone. Mom's and stepmoms should definatly read it!!

Summary: All I can say is...WOW!!
Review: Can i just start off by saying that this book almost changed how i think about things now. The intensity and description in it was so deep and I feel that the actors and actresses in the movie are a perfect fit. I normally don't watch much TV but I just couldn't wait to go and get the video. I know not everything was realistic but you have to realise that screenwriters don't want to make a movie where everything goes wrong- you have to be sat on the edge of your seat all the way through and it was all written to perfection! Every tiny detail was captured. Two big thumbs up!

Summary: Short and touching
Review: Despite the shortness (in amount of words/content) and its lightness (a thin paperback which weighs really light), this is indeed a good read.

Initially, i borrowed this book (yes, i borrwed this book from a library) because of Julia Roberts, as the movies she starred in are usually great movies, though i have yet to see this movie, and i was really surprised when this book is a lot better than what i thought; after all, most movie books aren't as good as the movie itself, as a picture indeed speaks a thousand words--moving pictures, a hundred thousand words?

Anyway, the way this story is written really touches me a lot, how Jackie (Susan Sarandon) went through her cancer, how Isabel (Julia Roberts) genuinely cares about Luke's (Ed Harris) children.... the way this story is weaved..... it really makes you feel for the characters. To sum it up, despite a rather simple plot, it's really touching and well worth your time.

Summary: excellent, touching book
Review: I enjoyed this book from the start. Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon are perfect for these parts, I could just picture them, I only hope the movie is half as good as the book. It made me laugh and cry. What a great story I could read it again.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: excellent read!
Review: I think that the author did a fantastic job of turning the movie script into a novel. It was a nice read that was hard to put down!
