Rating: Summary: A HORRIBLE sequel made from film quotes... Review: I am a huge fan of "Casablanca" and was very resistant to even acknowledge this book, but curiosity got the better of me and I started to read it. I tried to keep an open mind about it, but after the first few chapters, I realized what a waste of time (and money) this book was. It was painful to read -- it's as if the writer felt that by quoting the film's dialogue over and over, he could recapture the its magic. Well, it doesn't work AT ALL. I think what started it downhill for me was the letter Isla wrote Rick before they left for the airport, and the scene where Sacha says "Can I kiss you?" (in the film he kissed his boss on the cheek out of joy at what Rick had done for a fellow Slav -- the Bulgarian couple; Sacha didn't just run up to Rick and kiss him for the hell of it.) I don't think that this book could even stand on its own -- it's too heavily dependent on the original film, the plot is weak and implausible; and most of all, it's just dull. It's just a little bit of wishful thinking from a writer who wanted to see an alternative ending to the film. Final words: DO NOT WATSE YOUR TIME (NOR MONEY) ON THIS BORING BOOK.
Rating: Summary: Walsh knows what he's doing. Great! Review: If you like the film, Casablanca, you'll love "As TimeGoes By", the perfect sequel.
Rating: Summary: Great book, if you don't worship the movie. Review: I never really thought of too many questions regarding "Casablanca". That it is one of the greatest movies ever made everybody knows. But I have always watched it as a whole, never wondering that much about everybody's lives. Of course we all get curious about Rick's past, but it's part of the movie. Now, though, after reading this novel, it becomes somewhat clearer, and it's easier to understand some character's actions. If you're not from some cult religion that regards "Casablanca" as sacred, than you will enjoy this book, and get to finf out all those tidbits we were all somewhat interested for so long
Rating: Summary: Desecration of a classic; not bad as a novel Review: It has almost nothing to do with the movie except stealing a few great lines and using them poorly. As a novel, I could have gone with it if it hadn't been totally contrary charachter wise to Casablanca. If you don't know much about the movie, it is nice brain candy. (took me 5 hrs), but if you want a suitable sequel, look elsewhere, such as your imagination.
Rating: Summary: Sehr guter Anhang Review: Stellenweise wird die Vergangenheit und die Zukunft der Filmgeschichte etwas gar hektisch gemischt
Rating: Summary: A good, imaginative yarn Review: Apparently I enjoyed this book more than some others. I was a young teenager when 'Casablanca' was first released. I thought then - and still do - that it was a remarkable love story with a war setting. It was a film that grew better with the passing of time. But, I have never worshipped the film or the story. Walsh's novel, As Time Goes By, refreshed my memories and added an exceptional new twist to the character's background and to what just might have been in store for them after they parted so dramatically. I enjoyed the book and recommend it to others.
Rating: Summary: Standing alone, this is a wonderful book Review: If you read the nasty comments on this book, most are from die-hard Casablanca fans who can't stand that a sequel has been written. This one is good, though. It's much better than the Gone With the Wind sequel. It follows Casablanca with more adventure, exotic locations, and character development. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: This book is wonderful! Review: This book is practically a must for Casablanca fans. The dialog reads as though Bogey and co. were speaking. Finally all the questions viewers may have about Rick, Ilsa, Louis, etc. and their pasts are revealed from clues and hints given in the movie. This book is wonderful!
Rating: Summary: A desecration of an American classic Review: No one who knows or cares anything of Casablanca should read this book. The characters are not true to the film and the ethnic stereotypes are at best ignorant and at worst offensive. Furthermore, the idea that Rick would follow Ilsa and Victor to Lisbon negates the entire climax of the film. There is an intriguing concept in following the climax of the film but this novel doesn't follow it. I waited until I could get this from the library. Don't pay money for this book, especially if, like me, you love the film Casablanca.
Rating: Summary: A constant torture!! Review: One star is a far too good rating for this terrible piece of writing. This is the worst book I have read for years, if not the WORST EVER. A ridiculous and pathetic performance in any respect, how could an editor let this one possibly pass? As time goes by I hope this very bad "novel" will soon be forgotton...
