Summary: Incredible-Informing-Wonderful
Review: This book was wonderful. I am so happy to see that others have enjoyed this book as much as I have. I am just amazed with how open and honest Katia was in the book. She let the reader into her most private stories and moments with Sergi and many times, I was in tears. I am Katia's age, and I am just so impressed by how much she has gone through and accomplished, and her strength in dealing with her loss. However, I also felt sort of sorry for her, in the part where she talks about not having any real friends her age to discuss her feelings with. I was lucky in that I had people I could talk to. I also found the information about how figure skaters are treated in Russia quite amazing. I couldn't put this book down. I had read many exerpts in different magazines, and I knew I had to read this book. I must admit that although I am a huge figure skating fan, I was never interested in the pairs skating, UNTIL I watched Sergi and Katia, they were just so beautiful together and this book just oozed that beauty and love from the first line. I was also so impressed with how Katia handled Daria's birth. Here she was 20 or 21 years old and no one had really explained to her what was going to happen, and instead of falling apart, she handled it with grace, strength and a little humor. (Especailly when she was talking about signing the waver for the pain killers). She is really a remarkable woman, and I am so happy she has decided to skate again. Her smile is just radiant, warm and friendly. You can't help but love her and you can see why Sergi lover her as well. Sergi's death was not only a loss for the skating community, but everyone who ever came in contact with him. My only regret is that I discovered such a wonderful couple too late. I now wish I could have seen more of their wonderful performances, and I am thankful that I still have a couple on video-tape to watch over and over, and I have this book to re-read anytime I want

Summary: A beautiful love story and a well-written memoir.
Review: These are exerpts from my review which appeared in USA TODAY. The full text can be found at http://www.usatoday.com/life/enter/books/lob610.htm. Copyright 1996, USA TODAY. My Sergei begins at the grave of Sergei Grinkov, but readers aren't allowed to linger. To do so would miss the joy the skaters brought to each other and the spectators of the sport. Throughout the book, Sergei and Ekaterina appear well-grounded and reasonable, devoid of arrogance, despite their unparalleled athletic and artistic success. Their happiness emerges not from their athletic success, but from raising their daughter, a home-cooked meal, or simply driving with each other in a car. Many minor characters - a kind priest, a pitiless coach - are well-developed and add complexity to the lovers' portraits. The autobiography is well-written, reflecting Gordeeva's maturity, talent and charm that belie her 25 years. She is never overly sentimental about the past or future - the facts are dramatic enough. Gordeeva does include a number of previously unpublished pictures in the book. While touching, few photographs can adequately replicate the pair's grace on ice. Perhaps the book's only fault is that it does not come with a video.

Summary: A must read for all Gordeeva & Grinkov fans!!!
Review: Highly recommended for anyone who cherishes love, family, and friendship. This book is a moving account of the love and loss Ekaterina (Katia) Gordeeva experienced with Sergei Grinkov. Katia was only 24 when she lost Sergei Grinkov, her husband of five years and skating partner of 13 years, to a fatal heart attack. To most people 25 years is but a very short segment of our lives. When seen through the eyes of Katia, 25 years is an enormous portion of the gift we call "Life". With honesty and emotion interspersed with uplifting humor, Katia tells of her life with Sergei Grinkov. She shares with us the rigors or training and rigid discipline required of Olympic Figure Skating champions, the passion and emotion that made G & G the greatest figure skating pair of all time, the hearts and souls of two young children growing up in Russia, the tender romance of a kind and gentle young man and a naive teengage girl, the love and devotion to one another, and the joy of raising their young daughter. Katia has the ability to tell their life story in such a way as to leave you, not with the impression of a perfect life, but of a life filled with the perfect love. Gordeeva and Grinkov were not perfect nor were their lives, but the love was always there to guide them through life's struggles. If ever two people were made for each other, it must have been Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov

Summary: More than just skating - a love story
Review: This is the kind of book where you pick it up and are unable to put it down once you start. Filled with beautiful colour pictures as well as black and white, it is a first person account of Katia Gordeeva's life, both on the ice and off. While skating fans will enjoy this inside glimpse in the world of pairs skating, EVERYONE, not just skating fans will be able to read a love of incredible depth and scope. Many people dream of having someone who was the "love of their life" and this wonderfully romantic, though tragic, story is interesting and true. Filled with wonderful emotion, and honesty, we feel like we are engaged in intimate conversation with Gordeeva. After one finishes the book, we fill privileged to have shared in her wonderful life.

Review: This is a very good, very sad book. The pictures are beautiful and Katia does a great job of showing us life and love through her eyes.

I read some reviews of people saying that the love story between Katia and Sergei must not have real because just a couple years after Sergei died she had a daughter by another man and then married him. Truthfully, her second daughter was born six years after Sergei died and she got married a year after that - which I might add, seems to be a reasonable time to fall in love again, not that it is anybody's business but hers. Although it may take some of the romance out of it for us the readers, we should be glad for Katia that she has found love again in her life and doesn't have the same sadness she expresses at the end of the book.

All in all, a beautiful book and a touching love story.

Summary: Deeply Touching
Review: I am a student in high school, and this book was the most wonderful book I've ever read. I read it in eighth grade, and ever since then I've been trying to find it in hardcover. I found the book to be deeply touching, and while reading it, I actually cried. This book is a must-read for everyone, especially those who are fans of skating. You won't be able to put it down, and once you finish you'll never want to let it go. You'll want to read it over and over again. The story is very touching, about Ekaterina Gordeeva, and her passed husband, Sergei. She starts telling the story from when she was four and continues through until the death of Sergei by a sudden heart-attack, and her struggle to move on in life. It is a beautifully written biography of Sergei and Katia and there never-ending love. It will bring a tear to your eye, and you will never forget it.

Summary: Touching and revealing...
Review: There are not very many books about athletes that can combine the reality of the sport with the emotion of the lives behind it. Skating is kind of a fairy-tale sport, and Katia Gordeeva, in addition to her beauty, conveys a fairy-tale like quality both on the ice, and in her memoirs of her young skating career, and the life she entwined with her partner, lover, and husband Sergei Grinkov. If you've seen Ekaterina skate, you can't help but see the glow and the emotion she conveys on the ice.

Off the ice, the book gives the reader a marvelous look into the rigors of the lives of Soviet athletes, and paints a picture of young Sergei that makes you understand why he was such a central force in Ekaterina's life. The book is written a little clumsily, and although it does allow the reader to see and to understand all of Katia's insecurities, and worries about herself as a skater, a partner and a mother, the matter-of-fact style that it uses does Katia a disservice.

Still, and all, it is absorbing to read about this young lady who enjoyed such fame, such joy, and such a life changing tragedy as the death of her husband and professional partner. Pictures contained in the book only whet your appetite even more for the story, and you are left with the satisfying feeling of love and loss.

A beautiful read!
