Rating: Summary: a touching tribute Review: This book is the most touching tribute book that I have ever read. When I heard about the tragic death of Sergei Grinkov I had to read the book and in some way share with Ekaterina her story. This book will draw the reader in to a true love story, that will make you feel the emotions and yet, it will also show you that courage and hope remain even if you think all is lost. It is a love story, it is a true story, and it will show the reader that no matter what happens in life, love lives on. Ekaterina's strength, courage and love is to be commended, and she is to me, and angel, who, with her story has touched my life....forever.
Rating: Summary: A heartfelt, stirring portrait of love, triumph and trajedy Review: Ekaterina Gordeeva paints a touching picture of her brief but enchanting time with husband and skating partner Sergei Grinkov. She weaves the magically true tale of her life starting with her chidhoood, and continuing past the point of "Her Sergei's" tragic death, revealing along the way her dreams for their future, dreams that died with Sergei, and dreams that with his spirit, she will continue to strive for.
Rating: Summary: Shows love, compassion, understanding, life. Review: It was a great story for those who admired them on the ice, as well as, a couple off of the ice. It is great to know that true love does really exist. It is also great to share with people that all you have to do is say "I Love You" to your partner every day, or just show that you care. You never know what the day holds. Unfortunately, Katia will never have a fairy tale ending, but hopefully some day she will once again find true love.

Rating: Summary: Very heart moving, a true fairy tale Review: This book brings you into the lives of two very special, world class skaters and the life the lead together, first as pair, then as friends, and finally as lovers. It also shows you how fragile life can be, and to never take it for granted, as you never know what is around the corner. This book will bring you to tears, and will show you that we really do have fairy tales in the real world, but they don't always have a happily ever after ending. But it will also show you the true love, lasts for eternity. A beautiful book, shows true strength of the author.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful, romantic and uplifting Review: I loved this book. Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov are the best pairs skaters of all times. This book shows how they met, fell in love, got married and became parents. It must have taken a lot of emotion out of Katia to write this book and relive her life with her Sergei, but it was good for her. I enjoyed the story of how they met and started skating with each other, when he at first didn't think much of her. But as the book progresses, you see how that started to change. Katia grew up into a beauty and Sergei was right there. In the book, you learn a lot about Russia and how life was in the former Soviet Union. You learn a lot about Russian traditions and their way of life, which is so different than the way of life in the west. You also learn about how figure skaters lead their lives and how stressful it can get. We see how Katia and Sergei fall in love, get married and then have Daria. We feel the pain and sorrow of all the deaths that are in the book and we can relive that awful day when Sergei died of a heart attack. The next few chapters are wonderful, as Katia talks openly about how she felt sometimes that it was her fault, how she felt she was too lucky and all the pain and emotions she went through. The tribute chapter is beautifully done and once you read that part, you understand the tribute a lot better. This book deals with romance and tradegy, but also talks about getting your life back together. Katia's decision to keep on skating as a singles skater shows how much she loves the sport and how she is wanting to go on with ther life. Of course, her heart will always be with Sergei, but she knows now that she will be OK and having her little Daria helps her a lot as well. Her courage and determination are inspiring to all of us who have been through terrible pain. It is wonderfully written and as you read it, you can hear Katia's voice in your head, as if she is there talking to you. That is a sign of a fantastic book and you know all the things that are in there have come f
Rating: Summary: Forget skating, this book transcends and is about Life. Review: There are two books here: 1) skating and the biography, and 2) why we're here. If you pick it up for the former, progression leads to the latter message that gradually looms before you. An awakening. It's got the skating, but this becomes insignificant next to Katia's greater message told in a most innocent and candid manner. For males that read for the Olympic insight, you get that and also a profoundly touching story of life.
Rating: Summary: An honest and touching memoir of love, life and strength Review: In her book, "My Sergei," Olympic gold medalist Ekaterina Gordeeva (Katia, to her friends) shares the significant events in her life-- her family, experiences, thoughts and emotions, and life with and without her skating partner and husband, Sergei Grinkov. She tells her story in an open and friendly voice, so honest in its descriptions that it draws the reader in from the first paragraph and holds your attention throughout the novel. The memoir goes through Katia Gordeeva's early childhood and her experiences in the former Soviet Union, but mostly centers on the loving relationship between Katia and Sergei as they went from pairs skating partners to husband and wife, and later became parents with the birth of their daughter, Daria. Sergei's untimely death of heart disease on Nov. 20, 1995 brings the emotional rollercoaster to its lowest point, but with the help of friends and family, Katia proves herself to be a survivor endowed with enough strength and love to reach out even in the midst of her pain. Gordeeva and Grinkov's struggles for gold medals at the 1988 and 1994 Winter Olympics, their amateur and professional achievements in skating, and their close relationship to one another are wonderfully depicted in this novel. The political, technical and artistic elements of the sport of figure skating, usually so much of a mystery to the general public, are opened up with warm and gentle hands to be viewed and understand, perhaps better than any other figure skating book ever written. In assisting Katia with the writing of the novel, author E.M. Swift was wise enough not to embellish Katia's words beyond their intended meanings or simple depictions, while at the same time helping to clarify and enhance her vocabulary and voice. "My Sergei" is an enriching book on the depth and passion of love, and the strength of the human spirit under the most heart-wrenching and painful circumstances. It is truly a good read.
