Summary: Raising my glass to Berg
Review: This book is one of those honest and painful accounts of realization... the kind that makes you look at your own life till you realize that you've either got it all figured out, or you've been missing the point all along. Samantha (Sam) Morrow is so hurt when her husband leaves her and her pre-teen son Travis that she sends herself into a whirling dervish to correct what must be 'wrong' with her. But (don't worry) this isn't a story about her 'finding herself', it's about her remembering herself, and Berg pinpoints that complex set of values and emotions with reassuring clarity. You don't have to stare off into space and fiddle with your bookmark to find the deeper meaning between these lines... it's all right there in front of you, softly spoken yet boldly accurate. If you like stories that delve right into the messy lives of real people, then you will truly appreciate this book. You may also enjoy 'Blue Shoe' by Anne Lamott.

Summary: A book to re-read every year
Review: This was the first Elizabeth Berg novel I read and after unwillingly turning the last page I rushed out and bought two more of her books. Range of Motion was wonderful, but Open House remains one of my favorite books. Open House is uplifting and, in my opinion, perfect. It's amazing how much of an emotional impact such a short novel gives. The relationship between Samantha and King is exquisite, and anyone can relate to Samantha's ups and downs and empowering discoveries. I love how Sam figures out that not only is she not right for David, but David isn't right for her. Sam and King complement each other perfectly even though Samantha doesn't have the degree and intellectual prestige of the quantum mechanics professor King casually dates. Almost every page left me breathless. Samantha's voice is fresh and honest and a complete joy. I recognized myself in every twist and turn. Find out about yourself in this exquisite novel.

Summary: warms your heart and opens your eyes........
Review: Samantha is a women who has just had the rug of her life pulled out from under her. Her husband has left and is seeking a divorce. She realizes that although it felt like it had come from "out of the blue", it had really been building for a very long time. She attempts to come to terms with what she sees as a major obstacle to happiness in her life and begins to learn about herself, love and true happiness. She learns lessons from her mother, the people she rents rooms in her home too, and some other very interesting characters. Along the way, her choices in how she deals with her failed marriage will both enchant, amuse and horrify you!! Elizabeth Berg creates a story that warms your heart and opens your eyes to life's possibilities.

Summary: Elizabeth Berg does it again...
Review: Samantha Murrow opens her house to boarders to make extra money after her husband leaves her. Berg's beautiful storytelling and humour along the way brings the reader closer to the characters in this read and in the end, you will have felt like you were in the Open House!

You just can't go wrong with Elizabeth Berg!!!

Summary: Another Great One From Elizabeth Berg
Review: Elizabeth Berg is one of my favorite authors. I have loved every book that I read by her and Open House did not dissapoint me at all. Her descriptions of a woman going through a divorce are right on the money and I loved the great cast of Characters in this book.

Samantha Morrow seems to be living the perfect life, shes a housewife and stay-at-home Mom, but one day her husband decides that he is going to up leave her which was totally unexpected. Her Husband cuts off her credit due to the fact that she bought out Tiffany's on her husbands charge card. Sam does not want to uproot her son from his home so she decided to take in borders and through the help of King she finds a job.

The Characters in this book are great and I loved the tranformation Samantha makes with her life and herself.
I would recommend this book to anyone along with anything else that Ms Berg has written.

Summary: A great book to get lost in
Review: I read this book at a time in my life when I was very overwhelmed and sad and angry. I had read a few other Elizabeth Berg books, but this is my favorite. I think this is because it adds humor into the mix. I laughed out loud and cried at various times while reading it -- occasionally at the same time! My favorite memory of this book is when they had a prowler outside the house and the ... male roommate says "we need a man around here!" (They didn't of course -- I think this book is about making your own way AND finding love.) I also loved how King was a very laid back person, yet still very smart and fascinated by learning and doing -- a perfect kind of man, in my estimation. I really enjoyed this book.

Summary: Great 5 Star Read!
Review: Sam is a woman whose life is turned upside down when her husband just decides to leave her. She hasn't seen any signs until he tells her it is over and it just stuns her. She decides to be the best mother that she can be to her son Travis and does everything she can to make the transition easier. But when she has to take in boarders to make the mortgage on the house, Travis begins to resent her. Eventually, these boarders share their lives with Sam and Travis, and though they don't realize it, they learn many things. Sam tries out dating again and Travis tries to adjust to life without his Dad. From the separation, Sam learns many things about herself, about life, and about not settling for second best.
The emotions in this book are exquisite. Berg captures the feelings of divorce, mother/daughter issues, and even finding a job in a strange world. The characters really tug at your heart and you sympathize with the things that they are going through.
This book was truly a 5 star read for me! It is the first I have read by Elizabeth Berg and I eagerly anticipate reading more of them!

Summary: One of the best books I have ever read!
Review: This book has me laughing out loud and crying out loud! It is not often a book does this to me. I found myself sad that it ended. The way this book is written makes you feel like you are THERE in this world with these people. You want to hug them, laugh with them, cry with them, etc.

It is a touching story so true to life. And has bits that EVERYONE can relate to. Relationships with ex's, mothers, children, best friends, new loves, and so on. I LOVE IT!!!

Summary: Another great Berg!
Review: This was my second read by Elizabeth Berg. An amazing talented author, I plan to read all her books eventually.

Open House is about a very well known thing, divorce. In this story, Sam's husband has just left her. Sam's first reaction is to make David pay for his actions so she takes the charge card to Tiffany's. As the story progress, Sam realizes that she needs to make a new life for her son and herself. Sam opens her house and takes in some roommates in order to pay the mortgage. Through her roommates and new friend, King, Sam begins to reclaim herself and remember what was within herself before her marriage.

This novel was an Oprah selection, I can see why it has been chosen not only by Oprah but by numerous other book clubs as there is so much to discuss within the novel.

Summary: Tales from the land of divorce...
Review: Open House is the story of Samantha Morrow, a recently separated middle aged woman trying all she can to keep herself together while going through the divorce process. In many ways Open House was a very "typical" story I felt, the lonely middle aged woman trying to raise her son, hoping for her husband to return. It is not until the last 50 pages of the book that I felt this story actually had some deeping spiritual meaning and actually turned into somewhat of an inspirational story. The other thing which I was disappointed in was the lack of character development regarding the housemates that Samantha takes in. I felt that if the author had spent more time developing this aspect of the book it would have been a much more intriguing book. Nonetheless, Open House is an easy read and moderately entertaining as well.
