Rating: Summary: A Good Read! Review: I'm not sure what I was expecting, but book took a rather typical plot (husband leaves wife, wife has to learn to survive on her own with little/no skills outside the home) and turned it into an extremely interesting story. The main character chooses to open her house to boarders to help pay the mortgage, and must learn to live with different personalities as well as learn to deal with reactions of family and friends to her new situation/decisions. I kept expecting her to "get together" with King, but there are some other interesting and unexpected twists along the way that took me totally by surprise! I enjoyed the writing of the author, especially how she puts what the main character is thinking right in line with what is actually said. It really ads human aspects to the writing! I hope to read more books by Berg.
Rating: Summary: Open House Review: Although sometimes sad and a little painful, I found myself laughing out loud at some of Sam's actions and reactions concerning her divorce. Having been there myself, I found a number of Berg's observations about feelings right on the money. This is my second Elizabeth Berg book, and although it was very different from Talk Before Sleep, I found it a very satisfying and enjoyable read. I will be reading more from this author.
Rating: Summary: A fast-reading, insightful, make-you-think novel Review: Elizabeth Berg's novel, "Open House", simply would not let me put it down. In a tale that is both sad and comical, we watch the aftermath of Sam Morrow's divorce unfold in a series of headaches, embarrassments and victories. So packed with emotions that the reader will be vicariously driven to tears, laughter, and anger. It is a story that will remain fresh in the readers mind for days, months, perhaps even years. This is a book for everyone.
Rating: Summary: Nice, but lacking depth. Review: Great story line. I was unable to put the book down. I wanted to know more & I was hoping there would be more. But it lacked depth and conversation. I was unable to get to "know" the characters and who they were. I thought it was a great description of a relationship and what it's like when it's over. But to be honest I couldn't wait for the book to be over. I guess even Oprah's Book Club can pick a loser.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Put it Down! Review: I read this book in one sitting. The book was very developed except for the ending. It seemed as though all of this stuff was still going on and then it just stopped. All in all, a good book for a pleasant read.
Rating: Summary: Predictable and Shallow Review: This book was a dissapointment. There is no depth to the characters. There is also no description - I didn't even have the slightest idea of what Sam looked like. King was unrealistic - he was so fat that he'd only had one sexual experience. Yet when he lost 40 lbs, he was a dream. That doesn't make sense! The main story line was very predictable and the rest of the story seemed to have no point for being. This was a quick, breezy read, but not worth the time.
Rating: Summary: Mental trip through divorce Review: This book is quick and easy to read, which is nice--like a country song. Not too deep but deep enough. Gets the message accross and lets the reader feel the emotions of a newly separated women that lost herself to become an extension of her husband. I enjoyed the easy flow of this story. Most of us women have been through similar situations or at least the emotions. Great book......Definitely worth reading
Rating: Summary: a terrific read Review: Sure, you could criticize this book, as many have, for being a light read or shallow. I think they miss the emotional point which Berg nails right on the head: there are so many devastatingly moving scenes involving her son Travis, her feelings of insecurity and her emotional recovery that this turned out to be one of the best reads of the year. She reminds me in some ways of Raymond Carver because she capitalizes on these very personal moments. If you read beyond the "shallow" prose, you'll find deep thoughts and emotions, lots of humor, and lots of very true to life scenes. The minor characters were all quite well drawn too -- King will stay with you for a while. I suspect women will enjoy this book more than men, but after you read it, you may see why.
Rating: Summary: Surviving divorce with the sense of humor intact Review: This is a book about a woman going through a divorce--but don't let that turn you off. Although there is a lot of truth about the pain that divorce brings, this is also the story of a woman who grows and triumphs--with her sense of humor intact--after a messy breakup. The book is populated by funny supporting characters, from the MIT-trained engineer-cum-dogwalker that she falls for to the courtly but lusty septagenarian that becomes the divorcee's roommate. And our heroine? By turns pathetic and funny, but always human. This is a quick, fun read--perfect for a car trip.
Rating: Summary: Your going through all of Sams emotions with her Review: One of the best books i've read in awhile. You feel for Sam in this book. You feel her hurt, pain, happiness. There were times where I was cracking up and other times I wanted to cry with her. It really makes you wonder..."what would you do..if all of a sudden your husband leaves you and your left alone". Great Great book!!!
