Rating: Summary: best of berg Review: I've read all of E Berg's books and this was the best one yet. All of her books have great characters and concern "real" people, but for a GREAT laugh and a fast read pick this one up!
Rating: Summary: True To Life Review: There were times reading this book that I would laugh out loud. A few chapters later, I would be openly weeping. It's as if the author has invaded the thoughts of so many people who have been through devastating breakups and captured perfectly the emotions surrounding it all. But rather than a depressing, dismal account of despair, she infuses the book with liberal doses of quirky humor and creates a fabulous, fast read that leaves the reader with a hint of hope and a smile.
Rating: Summary: A woman picks up the pieces after divorce Review: I would have liked to give this 3 1/2 stars rather than 3 or 4 because I didn't feel it was quite worth 4 stars. It was an easy, pleasant read, somewhat predictable, with a bit of quirkiness to keep me reading til the end.I never quite understood why Sam's husband leaves and I feel his character could have been developed more, giving us some insight as to why he left. Next, King appears to be a promising character, with his odd name, large size and easy-going manner. But Ms. Berg takes the path of predictability in developing his character and Sam's relationship with King and I was disappointed at the lost potential. Ms. Berg is very adept at subtly demonstrating the strengthening of Sam's character as well as the underlying turmoil her son experiences as he witnesses his mother's struggle. I did enjoy this because it's a story many can relate to - struggling with the aftermath of separation and divorce.
Rating: Summary: Fluffy Detritus Review: No substance. Watch a week's worth of any ABC soap instead.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable as Always Review: Elizabeth Berg is becoming another Ann Tyler in my mind--I love her characters and their attitudes and reactions just as much as I always have Tyler's. She takes unpleasant subjects and makes them bearable and interesting--not to mention humourous in some ways. Am surprised that some readers have criticized the book for being depressing--divorce can never be anything else--regardless of how you deal with it. When I was divorced, I was only 28 with no children and my whole life ahead of me--I never looked back; which isn't to say it wasn't mind shattering. For a middle aged woman with a child, it has to be positively devastating! I think this book showed women how there is something positive in even the most menial job and that nice people, and even love, can come disguised in the plainest brown wrappers.
Rating: Summary: Wisdom & Humor....what a great read Review: This book kept me up to the wee hours, often belly laughing! And often identifying. I had nearly given up on Oprah's selections (too depressing). This was a refreshing change from her norm. Thank you Elizabeth!
Rating: Summary: A great easy read . . . Review: Though the story line was a bit depressing and caused me to analyze my own soon-to-be married life, I quickly became engaged with the book and its characters. While, I have never experienced divorce, I can imagine that the author has captured it accurately. I finished this book in about 2 days and at the end I was waiting for more! I would love a follow-up on King on Sam. All in all, the book is highly recommended
Rating: Summary: Berg's Innate Knowledge of What Makes Human Beings Tick Review: I've read all of Elizabeth Berg's books (my sister and I, in fact, fight over them). I stayed in my pajamas one Saturday and read this book cover to cover, sipping coffee and crawling back into bed. It's one of her best - humorous and filled with descriptive writing. Berg possesses that innate knowledge of what makes human beings tick - a gift that I believe all good writers are born with.
Rating: Summary: A Great, Fast Read! Review: I thought this book (the first by Berg that I've read) was fantastic. I was not disappointed at all, unlike some of the other reviews. I was delighted that it was a fast read -- having a two year old doesn't allow for books that take forever to get into. I can totally understand why Oprah picked this particular book, a welcome change from "We Were the Mulvaney's." (If I read the word Mulvaney one more time, I was going to scream! Never even finished it.) Sometimes you just need a book that puts you in a good mood!! Not everything has to be "deep and meaningful." The characters were very endearing. I am looking forward to reading other titles by Elizabeth Berg.
Rating: Summary: A quick but totally enjoyable read Review: My wife has been buying all the Oprah books so I thought I would read a few also. Of the 4 I have read, this is the one I have enjoyed the most. It's a fast read, and maybe that is my one complaint - we get to know the eccentric characters and we want to read more about them. The best thing about the book is how it can be laugh-out-loud funny at times yet deal seriously with the feelings of a woman going through divorce. When the main character's husband leaves her, she is forced to open her home and her life to an array of quirky people. At heart, this is really a love story about finding someone who loves you for being exactly who you are - weirdness and all. I am eagerly waiting for the movie with John Goodman in the role of King. Okay, so it hasn't been made yet, but it should! This book is a light read, but if you want something that makes you feel good after reading it, then give it a try.
