Rating: Summary: Laughing all the way to the bank! Review: What a pathetic book, spend the day with a whingeing woman. Unless this woman has had a character transplant and suddenly become what we see in the book, it should have come as no surprise to her that her husband left. I felt irritated by her self-pity, I felt angry that I had parted with my money to read such a load of tripe, Elizabeth Berg must have laughed all the way to the bank. I don't suppose she could believe her luck, an Oprah Book Club stamp on the cover of a complete piece of twaddle. Taking everyday things and making mountains out of mole hills, just get a grip Sam. Last word: TRIPE!!
Rating: Summary: Hits the DIVORCE nail on the head Review: This book was almost raw in its honesty of portraying the jumbled emotions divorce can bring out. She plumbed the depths of emotion that a person feels as he/she is trying to put their tattered life back together. The other characters are just there to give her people to play off of but serve to get her through her trying time. A witty novel that anyone who is thinking about divorce, or experiencing it, should read. You will feel better in the morning.
Rating: Summary: An easy read Review: This book was ok... at least I finished it. The one thing that aggravated me was that the main character was blind to her admirer. This book is good if you are looking for a quick mindless read.
Rating: Summary: Pleasant surprise! Review: I must admit that I have been somewhat disappointed with Oprah's choices over the past year and was reluctant to buy this book. However, I did so and couldn't put it down!!! I think this story really hits home with women who have been through a divorce. Elizabeth Berg has created a character, Samantha, who epitomizes all of the emotions associated with divorce-rejection, sadness, fear, grief, anxiety, etc. As Samantha opens her home to boarders in order to get ahead in finances (another pertinent issue), we are subject to a great bunch of characters who enable Samantha and her son Travis to survive and eventually mend. My personal favorite was Lydia. Oprah was right about this one.
Rating: Summary: Surprise! Not what you expect! Awesome book! Review: There are a lot of things in this book that I wasn't expecting, which only kept me more engaged. I really enjoyed this book and I was interested in it from the beginning. Its not one of those books that you doze off to at first and then realize you like it. When I thought I knew what was going to happen next, I was wrong. I don't like to know what a book will be about and so this book was one that I definately would recommend!
Rating: Summary: i expected more! Review: i'm only 19 and i wanted to read this book to get a feel for the emotions that are involved in a divorce. that might sound crazy, but i was hoping to learn some things about life and relationships. when i finished the book though, i got the feeling of "this is it?" it bothered me that she would buy things to try and sooth her pain instead of dealing with what was happening in her life. and to be honest, i wanted her to take her husband back when he admitted that he was wrong for leaving. sometimes people don't realize how much they appreciate what they have until they don't have it anymore. in this case, that was exactly what the husband was going through. i found her best friend to be very immature for childishly teasing a fat person and i disliked most of all how she was making her son do things that he didn't want to do. the only thing that i did enjoy was the fact that the new guy she met was smart and sensitive. as far as recommending this book to a friend; i probably wouldn't.
Rating: Summary: AMAZING Review: It is a book that all women will relate to!!
Rating: Summary: Very good - not what you expect Review: There are a lot of things in this book that I wasn't expecting, which only kept me more engaged.
Rating: Summary: Laugh out loud, cry in public Review: This was my first book by Berg and it was a gift from a friend. I opened it while eating lunch at my desk and found myself laughing out loud at Samantha's descriptions of herself. I also found myself dabbing the tears from my eyes when she revealed her loneliness. I read this book in one night - I simply could not put it down. I thought it was simply delightful.
Rating: Summary: Tedious Garbage Review: This is undoubtedly the most tedious, boring uninteresting book I have ever had the misfortune to read. The woman in the book Sam is the most miserable dreary unexciting person. I thought after 1 chapter - God, no wonder her husband left her. The rest of the book is like reading a diary of someone whos depressed. I almost felt dragged down reading it. Perhaps thats what people like about it - I dont know. The characters in the book are so unrealistic - like who would ever believe the removalist was an astrophycist or that he had only ever had sex once in his life Oh Please.......spare me the garbage. Its not even good "put yourself to sleep" reading. Its plain dull. When the end comes - its timely. Its almost as if the author got sick of writing the book and in the last 10 pages jammed in a "happy ending" which was quite predictable in any event. I was kind of hoping she would commit suicide just to give me a bit of a jolt - but no nothing like that. I wondered if it was an autobiography???????? Who knows and who cares. In a word DONT BOTHER
