Rating: Summary: Have to get this book on Jim Morrison for sure! Review: I'd heard that this is the definitive biography on Jim Morrison's life and times with his personal out of control problems as a bizarre cult status of the lizard king as a contemporary rock legend!
Rating: Summary: Gutless and Shallow Review: This is an awful biography. It gives absolutely no insight into the human being it supposedly portrays. It never, ever tries to get into his head, just reports his actions (always choosing the most bizarre and hateful ones) without a hint of understanding or critical judgement. This lack of a moral barometer makes the tone fall completely flat--Morrison's pointless self-destruction, betrayal of his own ideals and torture of all those around him come off, in this narrative, as inevitable products of his genius, equal to his songs. Everything's bathed in a fawning glow. After twenty pages you realize that this is not going to be a serious portrait of a man, but a cheesy, cardboard rerun of every suffering-artist-tortured-poet cliche that ever got spewed on the floor of some Parisian cafe. I'm making it sound like a misguided tribute, but it's really something much more vile: A commercial repackaging of a truly interesting figure that reduces him to fodder for the late-70's fascination with dead, "decadent", unrestrained rock stars. In doing so, it completely eviscerates him both as an artist and a human being. So steeped is it in the "hip" street culture of its time that it fails to provide any context for Morrison's life. No one born after the mid-sixties will be able to appreciate, from this book, how original, complex and daring a performer he was in his time. Any view of him as something other than a soulless Romantic cliche or hedonistic rock star is obscured. I don't envy the authors of this book. If they claim to be right on the money, they have to admit that they're glamorizing ("he's a god") a total cipher with no feelings for others and no ability to take responsibility for his actions. If they concede that Morrison was a thinking, feeling person who was misunderstood, they have to admit that they were the last people qualified to write this biography. As well as being too lazy to provide a background for it. I gave it two stars because it provides good literary sources for teenagers, but I think the mentality found in this book is exactly what killed Morrison.
Rating: Summary: A great bio! Review: I picked up this book a while back, because I was a big Doors fan. Yeah, Jim Morrison was an out-of control man, but the book is a fascinating portrayal of a very strange man. His relationship with Pamela Courson was quite intriguing. A good book--for Doors and non-Doors fans alike.
Rating: Summary: Fawning Portrait of a Big Jerk Review: I don't care how good his music may be, this guy was just evil. Though it's not a bad biography as biographies go, the subject matter of this self-pitying, out-of-control, attempted-murderer rock star dude is just not very important or interesting. Maybe if it had been packaged as fiction, I could be more forgiving.
Rating: Summary: Way cool and had to read twice!! Review: This was one of the best books on Jim Morrison I have ever read. I could not put it down, from page one it was non stop.In fact I read it twice.mgray
Rating: Summary: well written prtrayal of the life and death of J.D. Morrison Review: When this book is read, it makes all of the other information that you have heard about Jim seem void. A well written portrayal af his life, fame, sorrow, and petite happiness. I would recomend this book to any one who is a Doors fan or are wish to learn about the late 1960's.
Rating: Summary: The Doors rule Review: I think this book deserves five stars because this book documents the life of Jim MOrrison with style and grace!Jim was a God and this book showed that very well.I never really knew that JIm did all of those things, even though he did I still think this was a good documentation.I am fifteen and this book changed my life by making me realize that dreams are the most important thing around because if Jim would have given up his dream there woould be no Doors and there for leaving me with no direction or goals.Jerry awsome job.Two thumbs up!!!
Rating: Summary: excellent first time resource on the life of an americanpoet Review: Not knowing too much on the life of this poet, beyond rumors and his songs, I discovered a world of intrigue behind those insanely brilliant eyes. This book offers a concise biography of the life of Morrison with limited opinion from the author, leaving the reader to his/her own input. This is what makes it such an excellent first time book. After reading such a biography, one can only thirst to read more books on Jim and make oppinions on biased authors' writings...
Rating: Summary: P.S. Review: i don't watch many movies, or much TeeVee, but i thought Val Kilmer was *spooky* as J. Morrison. i read in a studio magazine, that most of the auditioners showed up, dressed like jim with Puka Necklace? Val K. showed up dressed like (whatever) and just offered a VCR tape of a music video he had paid for? with a band backup, heavily produced, etc.
Rating: Summary: exelllent dipiction of his every day life Review: The book is incredible.I could not believe that I was reading about someone's life. He was not someone-he was Jim Morrison. He was trying to fit into the world with his poetry and as a musician, trying to be accepted by everyone. Take a chance, and read the book... you might just like it
