Summary: A Father's Heritage
Review: This book is a masterpiece of writing. It is elegant and full of every kind of emotion that humans are capable of. This book takes you to beautiful Montana where the author was raised by his widowed father in a rough, demanding environment with little money.

Throughout his life, the father continuously makes sacrifices to give his son a better life, and opportunities that didn't exist in the Montana mountains. They had a hard life, full of setbacks, but rather than whining about it, they dealt with it, and they survived together. By example, his father pass's his love, compassion, courage and integrity to his son.

Reading this book should give you a better understanding of your relationship with your father or parents, and why they did things the way they did.

I have shared this book with many other people, all of whom have loved it.

Summary: Montana and Family
Review: This exquisite book is Doig's memoir of being raised by his father and grandmother on ranches throughout Montana until he departs for his own adult life. I found it to be a crystal clear picture of his experiences and the relationships in his life. Doig's writing can be rewarding in two big ways. First, the book is a page-turner; his story-telling abilities pull you right into his world. Second, the man is a master craftsman of the english language. His sentences are to be enjoyed independent of the story. I'm so glad I found this book. His more recent book "Winter Brothers" is also excellent if less well known.

Summary: One of the best books ever written!
Review: This House of Sky chronicles the early years of a boy growing up in Montana under circumstances that to others might appear difficult - his mother died young, his father and grandmother bring him up, poverty is never far. The author is a remarkable man whose tale that describes a way of life gone by and people whose spirit and determination are hard to find. This is one of the few books that I have read more than once - even after four or five reads it remains fresh. This is also great book to give as a gift, and the recent hardcover version has a special forward by the author

Summary: A loving gift
Review: This House of Sky is an incredible gift to Doig's (the author) father and grandmother. Doig writes with grace and beauty in remembering his life with them in Montana when life was sometimes something to be physically endured. For example, his picture of a small town after a blizzard: 'In the fresh calm, wood smoke climbed straight up from chimneys, until it appeared as if the fat gray ribbons were dangling all the town's houses down into a bowl of snow.'

You must read this book. Then, give copies as gifts to everyone you love.
