Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Fantastic collection of radio gems
Review: Suspense was one of the longest running dramatic programs in radio's "golden age." It was on the air for over twenty years, from 1942-1962, bringing listeners famous movie stars, singers, and comedians in dramatic stories of, you guessed it, SUSPENSE! The program featured top writers and directors, and it remains a favorite among fans of old-time radio. For most of its long run, Suspense was broadcast live each week (turning to tape recorded performances in the mid-1950s), and knowing that many of these shows were captured in one "take" as they went out live over the airwaves makes them all the more remarkable.

Radio Spirits has done a good job here of collecting a variety of programs from the series's long run. The sound, while not CD quality, is quite good for most episodes, considering that many must have come from multi-generational tapes of long-lost or no longer available broadcast transcriptions. Some surface noise is evident, and some are a bit muffled, but generally speaking, they are pleasant to listen to and in my opinion, much better sounding than the poorly remastered shows Radio Spirits is cranking out these days with annoying digital artifacts that mar the listening experience. The episodes in this set are closer to "raw" transfers of the original transcriptions.

Unfortunately, unlike most of Radio Spirits' other 20-tape collections, this set does not have a booklet with detailed information about each broadcast. Additionally, this is an early set from Radio Spirits and has not been made available on CD, just cassettes. Despite these shortcomings, it's a great set which will keep you entertained for hours--30 to be exact.
