Rating: Summary: HELLO OLD FRIENDS Review: It was great to visit with old friends like boldt, daphne and lemoia. I am glad none of my favorites were killed. Think this one was less technical - but that is ok. Love dialog between boldt and lemoia. Can't wait for the next one. Hurry Ridley.
Rating: Summary: Middle of Nowhere Review: Ridley Pearson does it again! Boldt and Matthews on their latest mystery show their emotional human side as well as their detective prowess. Well crafted mystery, the best Ridley Pearson yet. Impossible to put down, as there is so much suspense.
Rating: Summary: Appropriately Titled.... Review: The Middle of Nowhere is most appropriately titled. It seems that the best of this story is in the middle of the book. And the rest of the story goes--you guess it--nowhere. I thought over and over again about tossing this one aside, but felt disloyal, as I have always enjoyed Pearson's books. About page 150, the story finally grabbed me and held me for the next 125 pages. I skimmed the rest. A disppointment.
Rating: Summary: Unsettling Review: Middle of Nowhere can refer to the tiring limbo of a police strike, a villain's lair, or the state of Lt. Boldt's marriage. However, it doesn't refer to a Pearson book, even if I didn't find this one as involving and suspenseful as some others: I was actually able to put a Ridley Pearson book down for a few days! Although it starts as a simple series of burglaries (with a few twists, as of a neck), intriguingly discordant facts begin to pop up as the story veers into labor problems, feelings around overwork, marital discord, prison enterprises, hard feelings, and the suspicion of police moles. Seemingly disconnected, these episodes eventually contribute something (even if that's not necessary in the real world). Pearson increases tension and moves the story along by outrageously violating police procedure to have Lt. Boldt, or his partner forensic psychologist Mathews, hare off alone with virtually no support, not once, but three (3) times, and contriving they receive merely peripheral wounds for mortal mistakes. This is not the first time that Mathews has paid for psychologizing rather than tending to police work. Other details seem convincing, and the Seattle atmospherics are good. As always, the stories are enjoyable, even provoking thought, because of characters with a human depth to them, this time even a villain. The slip cover art of a power tower has nothing to do with the plot for the longest time, and is neither ominous nor attractive.
Rating: Summary: Pearson's plot is lost in the wilderness Review: Ridley Pearson is a talented writer who generally spins a credible tale. Boldt and Matthews are both likable and flawed, which makes them ring true as characters. In Middle of Nowhere, Pearson bites off more than he can chew and at times, his plot is rather hard to swallow. The novel starts off with a police strike and our heroes are overworked and overstressed. One of their own is attacked, which launches this exciting if rather far-fetched story. At one point, there are so many people chasing a robbery suspect that it reminds me of a Keystone Cops scenario. On top of that, Boldt's marriage starts to shred at the seams and if not for his saintly martyr of a wife, he'd really be in the doghouse. We all know he has 'a yearnin' for a certain psychologist, but why does this attraction suddenly come flying out of the closet? Are we supposed to believe that job tension is turning up the heat? Everyone also knows that you never go after a suspect without backup. How many times have we seen this mistake on television and on the printed page? It's a virtual death sentence. Sure, it sets up a major plot point, but I think Pearson could have found a better angle to get his man. His knowledge of electrical transmission towers also seems a bit shaky. Without going into details, I will only say that if Pearson had aped his character's actions, he'd probably be pushing up the daisies. In summary, if you are already a Pearson fan, then you will probably want to read this. If this is your first time at the bat, then you may want to start with some of his earlier novels.
Rating: Summary: Suspenseful In Seattle Review: Called one of the best thriller writers extant, Ridley Pearson may also soon be called one of the best readers around as he brings new meaning and depth of understanding to the challenges faced by Seattle police lieutenant Lou Boldt. In the midst of a labor dispute that has polarized the Seattle Police Department, Boldt is forced to do double time trying to find the perpetrator of a brutal attack on Maria Sanchez, one of his officers. Push comes to more than shove when it begins to look like the attacker might be another cop.
Rating: Summary: Middle of Nowhere by Ridley Pearson Review: This book grabs you from the beginning and won't let go. Pearson has surpassed his previous Lou Boldt novels and made this one unforgettable. With the many plot twists and turns, you are constantly caught off guard. I would strongly recommend this book for fans of police procedurals and mysteries, alike.
Rating: Summary: He's like fine wine, getting better all the time Review: Middle of Nowhere was a much easier read than the First Victim and a better paced book. My only real disappointment was that Liz is still around and still complaining (about a little kiss, give me a break! Can't Ridley kill this witch off and get Daffy and Lou together once and for all?) Anyway Daphne finally gets to show her smarts and her vulnerabilities as a cop (she just has to get under Flek's skin), LaMoia's faults and strengths show forth and Bobbie is made out to be one hot Boldt/LaMoia protege. And the rest of Boldt's peers--not much on Dixie (actually, not bad cos no murders) But Lofgrin shows to be the friend indeed when he offers to lose evidence......Ridley, keep them coming!
Rating: Summary: Middle of Nowhere Review: From the first page this book grabs a hold and won't let go! Ridley Pearson has outdone himself! His books keep you interested and on the edge of your seat! Sleep doesn't come until you reach the last page!
Rating: Summary: The Best Boldt/Matthews/LaMoia/Gaynes yet! Review: MIddle of Nowhere is the best yet. As a Seattle resident, Irelate to the mood of Ridley Pearson's works. This is his best yet. He intensifies the emotions and tensions that he has painstakingly developed over the years. ... But personal loyalties and the love that is truly shared by all salvages a dangerous situation. The hunt for, and final disposition of the killer is more of a counterpoint to the main theme and melody of this symphony of words. This is a wonderful read. Pearson now ranks at the top of the list of the Seattle mystery writers - Jance, Emerson, Ford.
