Rating: Summary: Another Hoffman Hit! Review: Alice Hoffman has scored again with Turtle Moon, a grown up fairy tale with a twist. I love how Hoffman's books deal with characters who may be unlovely on the outside, but who turn out out to be beautiful on the inside (and vice versa!). Overall, her characters are heartbreakingly human, and my heart breaks everytime I read Hoffman's books. So cathartic; and so irresitable!
Rating: Summary: Intriguing and sensational quite an inspiring masterpiece. Review: Alice Hoffman provides a wonderful tale, reflecting the romance, tragedies and realities of life. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a clever and realistic story.
Rating: Summary: A Great Read Review: I expected this to be more of a family drama. I liked the murder/mystery twist. Again, Alice gives us complex characters to follow. Her spare prose enabled the plot to keep moving. This is a good book.
Rating: Summary: it made you feel with the story and you knew every character Review: In most books you only get to know 2 or 3 people'but in turtlemoon you know the whole town as if you grew up there youself. The story was so very intriguing as to how noone ever is outwardly as they truly are on the inside.
Rating: Summary: Rich, haunting murder mystery totally satisfies the listener Review: "Turtle Moon" was one of the best surprises I have had the pleasure to read. The story of a young mother and her troubled pre-teen son looked interesting on the cover jacket, but I was unprepared for the tremendous descriptive writing style of Ms. Hoffman. The reader/listener truly gets lost in the lives of the characters due to Alice Hoffman's lyrical and insightful characterizations. You feel the sticky heat of Verity, Florida, the bravado and fears of young Keith, Lucy's need for independence, Julian's quiet southern determination and even the loyalty and intellegence of his dogs, especially the bond between Keith and Arrow.Who are these characters, and what is the mystery of the gumbo limbo tree? The answers unfold in an old fashioned mystery coated in southern molasses. Lucy is escaping a bad marriage and has come to Verity, Florida to start a new life. So is the young mother in her apartment complex that turns up brutally murdered on a hot May night. Her infant daughter is discovered by Lucy's son Keith, a surly adolescent who cannot wait to return to his father once school is out. The two hide out in the woods surrounding Verity, surviving on garbage and food left out by the young donut waitress, who is planning her own escape from Verity. Julian Cash is a Verity police officer with haunting past of his own. He both investigates the murder and searches for the missing children. This brings him into a very close relationship with Lucy. Lucy's search for answers brings her back to New Jersey, where she fled her marriage. It is there that she discovers the truth behind her murdered neighbor and cements her new realtionship with Julian. Julian brings Keith and the infant to the woman who raised him, which gives the reader even more insight into his character. "Turtle Moon" is a gripping story leaving the reader hungry for more Alice Hoffman. Sandra Burr gives a masterful performance on the Brilliance Corporation reading. For a follow up, I would suggest Hoffman's "Here On Earth", written in the same rich descriptive style.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book, Alice Hoffman is a great writer. Review: The reason I picked this book, is that I had read Practicle Magic by the same auther, which was also a great book. Turtle Moon is about an officer Julian Cash, Lucy Rosen, her son Keith, and a baby. Keith can't wait to get away, and he does when a women is murdered and her baby is left behind. Keith takes off with the baby. Julian and Lucy take off after him. I like how this book keeps you guessing, you never know whats going to happen next. Everything is so unexpected and exhilarating. You know practicly all there is to know about the characters, well that is everything the author wants you to know. There is very good detail, just the right amount. I didn't incounter one boring spot, some not as exciting as others, but all in all I don't think anything was really bad in this book. This book is different then anything other book I've read and that's another reason for me liking it so much. Each charater has a story told and each one is so interesting. I'm not really sure what this books tipe is, it's a twist of; mystery, love, suspense, and a fairy tale. In conclusion I would highly recommend this book for others.
Rating: Summary: A good one Review: Hoffman deliberately holds back on slicing the melon in half with this novel, as in all of her writing. There is a reason: this author makes less description work harder to become more. You will not find a melodramatic, overblown Danielle Steele. Turtle Moon is an impressive work. Loved it. . personally, I prefer spare, economical writing in a book that is also lush with imagery. It may not be everyone's cup of tea.
Rating: Summary: Sorry Alice, didn't like this one much at all. .. . Review: I kept expecting the book to get better, but it never achieved what started out as an adult fairy tale with spiritual significance and mystical influence. There were only a couple of time that I felt sincerely moved by a passage in the book. Its a good thing I read Here On Earh, and At Risk before Turtle Moon or I may never have given Hoffman any more of my reading time. This is a good childrens's book (teens); however its mentally and emotionally lacking for the mature reader.
Rating: Summary: Terrific Review: I was "forced" to read this for a summer school reading and at first i took no appeal to it though after a few pages I found that this book would be the Best book I have read in a long time! Her discription of charecters, places, events brought you into the story.. I had Just finished it last night Aug. 29, 1998 and nothing could catch my attention my mind was and still is hooked on this wonderfull book. Im not sure it's the story or the writer but you can bet that i'm finding another of Hoffmans! I very much recomend this book! Thank you for listening
Rating: Summary: a very engaging novel... Review: Alice Hoffman is certainly one of the most insightful writers of our time. Her characters take on life with the same kind of bewilderment that many of us do. They are not all good or all bad, just a little mixture of both that make them all the more lifelike.
