Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: A very nice book and true. And a good proof why EDS is so successfull
Rating: Summary: Fiction can't compare Review: Another company now owns the site, but I work in the exact building on Forest Lane that stood as EDS headquarters in that era. Ross's office is all mahogany, custom-made, polished, still. 1960s building code limits to 7 floors but Ross built 8, calling the 1st floor "Ground Floor". I enter the actual room where the incursion was planned each day. Let me tell you mister, the history is literally palpable each time you step inside. This book is better than fiction - True action stories always are.
Rating: Summary: a not so big reader, reads it in two days Review: As you can guess from my title I'm not the biggest reader.Like I said though, I read this book in two days. Now about the book. It was fast paced and never got boring. The only problem for some people that are not use to reading a lot, might be all the different characters. At a couple points, I had to go back to make sure I knew who I was reading about. Other than that it was great. This would make a great movie. It also kept going back and forth between the action all over the globe. It also goes into Iran's situation durring the revolution. Overall I recommend this book to everyone and anyone that likes action and suspence. Not to mention it's a true story.
Rating: Summary: Someone Should Have Rescued This Book! Review: Boring, boring, boring. The writing style of this book is dry and dull. It sounds like it was dictated by Perot. With all the high marks that readers have given this book, I can only guess that they are all EDS employees, or Perot himself. Its nice that these people were resuced, but nothing heroic really happens. They wait in a hotel till the prison is stormed. Then they drive across the border. What else could they have done. Perot should have probably pulled out of Iran earlier. Perot is always negitive about goverment, but he owes his fortune to goverment contracts.
Rating: Summary: Confidential MEANS Confidential Review: Concerning the review of A Reader from Oregon, concerning your comments about the no picture of Rashid. Please read the Preface where Ken Follett clearly states that Rashid is NOT the man's real name and Rashid would be in danger if his real identity were known. Would it not follow that if they published a book with his picture in it, he would be in just as great a danger? There is a good reason for his picture NOT being in the book. Basically this is the story of heroism by civilians that volunteered to help out two of their countrymen in trouble. If you find this boring, I would suggest you have a surgeon reconnect the missing portion of your brain, if possible.
Rating: Summary: What we really can accomplish to do good! Review: Facts are facts, and this reporting is a must-read for all people, especially in a democracy, where so much depends on the attitude of each individual. We see by example what humans really CAN do for good. An individual who has indeed accomplished a great feat, albeit with the help of others, is entitled to the respect that such activity commands. Follett's book shows not only Perot's strength of determination but also his appreciation for others' ability and his sincere interest in "getting the job" done - as evidenced by his hiring those most capable to do it and trusting THEM to use THEIR judgment regarding the remaining makeup of the group, the necessary preparation, and the implementation of the plan for rescue. We can accomplish so much more than we think we can
Rating: Summary: Good Non-Fiction Drama Review: I had read this book and enjoyed it, and gave it to my elderly father because I thought he would enjoy it too. He thinks Ross Perot is great. He read it in three days. It is truly astounding that Mr. Perot pulled off this daring rescue. In late 1978, with revolution exploding, Perot's two top executives for EDS (Paul and Bill) were arrested in Tehran, Iran, and Mr. Perot's own name was on "Stop" lists at airports, etc. Mr. Perot went to Iran to visit his men in jail and then managed to get past the passport checkpoints at the airport to fly back out again. Amazing. The tale of Paul and Bill's escape from jail and theirs and other EDS employees escape from Iran is better than any fiction story. I have noticed some other reviewers saying this was not really a rescue. I wonder if they read the same book I did. Can you say Bull Simons?
Rating: Summary: Nothing "stupid" about this team Review: I have read the book several times, and maybe I'm a bit biased, therefore disqualifying myself from making an objective review. Why? My dad was one of the members of that so-called "stupid team" and the fact that these men, all EDS employees, risked their lives to rescue coworkers says a lot about EDS,its' corporate culture, and its' employees. There is a lot of Perot praising (he is not one of my favorite people), but he risked his own life to see these men when they were imprisoned, when there was a price on his head set there by the Iranian government. I would say that this is an inspirational read, one to pick up if you want to restore your faith in America and the people who live here. Yes, "good guys" still exist, not everyone is selfish; I'm lucky enough to be a daughter of one of those good guys, and old friends with many more.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: It is as interesting as any of Tom Clancy's books with out boring you with 60 different plots that you know will eventually come to geather. It is great non-fiction book that lets you emerse yourself in the characters as well as the events of the time. If you have to do a report for school it is a great book, but it is just as good if you are looking for an interesting non-fiction read. A real page turner.
