Rating: Summary: Join the wagon train! Review: A friend recommended this book to me and I took it home. I wasn't really going to read it. I have never cared for 'western' type stories. I knew my friend would ask me about it so I started reading late one night, never intending to finish it. I read over 100 pages that night and I finished the 400+ page book the next day (yesterday). I could not put it down. Her carefully crafted prose pulled me along and I felt a part of that wagon train. I am going back to the library tonight to see if they have the sequel yet. If not, I will just buy it. I also plan to read her other books. I highly recommend this book!!
Rating: Summary: All together wonderful Review: All Together In One Place is the kind of book that makes me proud to be a woman. I would like to think that in the circumstances the women of the book faced I would be able to have the courage they have. The women of the book are all women that I would like to know, and thanks to Jane Kirkpatrick's masterful writing I feel that I do. I am looking forward to the next book, but am restraining myself for a bit. You see, when I started reading All Together In One Place i couldn't put it down! My family was neglected till I finished the book - at 4:00 in the morning on the second day!
Rating: Summary: Looking Ahead With Courage given only by God Review: All together in one place knits the lives of people who would probably not have ordinarily become close. The strength and weakness of each person gives meaning to the stories that unfold with each new chapter. The way women handled situations could probably compare, because we are seldom told, with the personal situations from the Bible. ie The Necessary Circle. These people and later the women were fortunate to have a strong Christian woman among them. God always tells us we are not alone but He gave them a Sister to hold them accountable for giving Thanks in all things - even tragedy. This book followed by No Eye Can See brought me into the lives and friendship with women from my past. I could at different times relate to most of them. Jane brings about personal situations that touch the innermost core of the reader. I could hear myself spouting angry words about a "rat" who tried his utmost to create disaster for Ruth and another time laughing out loud at another situation. I was so angry at the law that literally sold human beings and ripped babies and parents from one another. I held the new baby as did his Indian mother. Jane ends her books with hope for the future of all and the reader wanting MORE. I did not want to finish the books because then my "friends" would be gone and as with every good book - I felt like I moved away and would loose touch. I like to share my friends with people I care about so we can discuss them. JK books are fantastic.
Rating: Summary: History, Wholeness, and Hope Review: All Together in One Place, transported me not only to another time and place, but also through a journey of wholeness with 11 women who suffer incredible hardships on a wagon train headed west. Yes, I smelled the wood smoke of their fires, felt their grime and sweat, and learned to yoke oxen and load wagons with them. But more importantly I walked with women of depth through a journey of healing and hope. I experienced their fears, cried their tears and saw answers slowly unfold within them. As usual, Jane has researched her subjects well. Authenticity shows not only in historical accuracy but in the psychological drama of what one normally considers to be only modern day maladies. Each character is alive with his or her distinct personality. Visionaries, exploiters, kind spirits, comedians, and all types of characters in between live on the pages of All Together in One Place, as does one very good dog. Lovers of history, the West, and wholesome books with depth will enjoy this book a lot.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Story Review: As the great great granddaughter of overland immigrants, who incidentally wrote a wonderful journal of their journey, I am always drawn to stories of the Oregon/California trail. Their courage, stamina, faith and amazing "stick-to-itiveness" never fails to humble me. This story captures the essense of the trail, the hardships that were faced every day. We whine when the car is on the blink and we must walk a few blocks! Imagine walking across the country! Thoroughly enjoyed the book and will look for more in the series.
Rating: Summary: Western Adventure Review: Beautiful beautiful book. Loved it from the first page. Reading about the travels of these women put me right there.Travel by this method was so hard, trying to improvise in your everyday lifestyle. There was no privacy to be had, emotionally or physically. What an adventure! I can't wait for the other two books to come out. Thanks Jane Kirkpatrick.
Rating: Summary: All Together In One Place Review: Could not put it down, the last two days of reading have beenspellbinding. I anxiously await the next boo. END
Rating: Summary: A Millon Stars - to light my path Review: Ending a 33 yr marriage from a powerful, wonderful. abusive man has been a story all by itself. Reading, always a coping mechanism, was not working.... Until a few months ago, I went to my small town library and Jane's book was Standing up in front of me...As all have said, I could not put it down...Courage ,empowerment and hope to go on . This is what this book gave me... So, I rushed back to the library for another...No More? NO! I called a library 20 miles away .they had none.( they do now).So I called the Cincinnati, Ohio library 45 miles away. They had one...I am on my way. "Love to Water the Soul" Now I have read all of her books ..,(driving her crazy to write faster) There are no words to say how Janes' books have given me the strength to keep going in my quest to sell my home, legal battles, despair, no money and recreate my life..Read all of her books and give them to all who have lost their way."Homestead" makes my home 1/2 mile up seem like suburbia..God Bless her for answering her call, I KNOW why...Sincerely, Donna J. Sanders PS My first Grandchildren born July 5,2000 ,twins Mina and Ben, have helped too!!)
Rating: Summary: A literary delight Review: From a writer's standpoint, this book is incredible. Sharply drawn characters, natural dialogue, vivid scenes and fresh comparisons. Jane Kirkpatrick is a rare find in the often substandard realm of Christian fiction.
Rating: Summary: So Glad I Bought This Book! Review: I absolutely loved this book. It is such a find! Based on an entry in Ezra Meekers Journal about 11 'turnaround' women he encountered on the Oregon Trail who had lost all their men tragically and decided to 'turnaround' and head back east, Jane Kirkpatrick has taken those few words and scripted a real pageturner. I literally could not put this book down as I eagerly awaited every second I could spend reading it. I immediately purchased book two and three in the trilogy. The writing is lyrical and so descriptive you can FEEL it! The Character development is fabulous and indepth. Each is so very different and well depicted. Mazy Bacon is a young wife whose husband is hiding a secret past, Suzanne is a young mother who is expecting another on the trail and was blinded in a tragic photography accident, Ruth Martin is a battered woman on the run from the man who murdered her infant son, Tipton has travelled along to marry the love of her young 15-year-old life as she struggles with a severe panic disorder, and that is only a few of the women! This is definately not "fluff" historical fiction. I highly recommend this Trilogy!
