Rating: Summary: Don't bother spending the time or money! Review: I'm usually a big fan of Ann Rule. But I have to ask... why did she bother writing this book? There wasn't anything that you couldn't have learned by reading the newspaper details. In fact, after I read this book I asked myself, "why did I bother reading it?" I'd save your time and money. There are a lot better books out there!
Rating: Summary: Just goes to show no one can judge any book by its cover! Review: I thought Bitter Harvest was very well written and that Ann Rule did a fabulous job walking the reader through Debra Green's "adult" life. Unfortunately, I was disappointed that Rule did NOT "dig deeper" into Debra Green's pathology and its potential cause(s). Saying no more beyond she is manic depressive is much like saying Bundy was simply obsessive compulsive.
Rating: Summary: Horrifying! Review: While I do not feel that this is one of Ann Rule's best efforts, the story she relates is terrifying and thought provoking. I feel that Bitter Harvest lacks closure which is present in most of her books; but it still is a slice of modern-life of the most horrifying kind. It is mind boggling that Dr. Green escaped any type of child endangerment/abuse notice. Was it the system or society that failed to take note until 2 children died?
Rating: Summary: Bitter Harvest a good read with incomplete ending Review: I read everything Ann Rule writes because she takes the time and trouble to try to figure out the "why" of these horrific things. I was left with the same confusion as another reader, which is a brief overview of the kind of woman who can tell the son who adored her to go back into the house and "wait for help". I think there's a lot more to her than simply a woman with too high an IQ, a sleep-around husband, and a lot of anger. I wish Ann could write a sequel and cover that issue. All in all, a worthwhile book, leaving the reader with a lot of questions.
Rating: Summary: Ann Rule is the best; Bitter Harvest not her best, however. Review: Deborah Green is a horrific personality and I feel not enough time was spent by Ann Rule unraveling the complexities of this sad and terrible tale. That Ms. Rule tackled this story is commendable; but she let go too soon. I wanted to know more about Celeste Walker and Green's hapless husband, Mike Farrar. Compared to Rule's other brilliant publications, Bitter Harvest seems like a throw away.
Rating: Summary: In the name of love Review: This was a very sad book..I felt so sorry for her and her husband.. Ann Rule is such a great True crime writer I have read every book she has written
Rating: Summary: execllent Review: this book is very good. The only point I differ on is the Clutter family that Ann Rule mentions. They were not killed in Garden City Kanas, but in Hollcumb just a few miles west of Garden City
Rating: Summary: Another Rule Masterpiece Review: If you enjoyed reading Ann Rule's other books, you'll like this one. It follows standard formula; starting with the horrible crime itself, following the main characters through their early lives, their lives together, and eventually leading to a court case where someone (in this case, Dr. Debora Green) is found guilty of henious crimes. I enjoyed reading about Dr. Green and her husband Dr. Farrar and their family. It's sickening how two people with such a promising life ahead together can turn so ugly. I can see the bad in both, although it is Green who ultimately goes through with tremendous evil and ruins an entire family, and the people around them.
Rating: Summary: Mesmerising Review: Totally captivating from beginning to end. While you could sense the outcome, you still could not fathom such an act happening. Dr. Debora Green had such an extremely high I.Q. that she was not able to deal with normal every day life or emotions. The sheer terror of Dr. Michael Farrar to live with such a mind for so many years must have been like facing the devil himself. Wickedness and evil at its core. Dr. Green was a walking ticking time bomb and nothing short of her own death could have prevented the events that transpired that October night.
Rating: Summary: Bitter Harvest is #1 for Ann Rule junkies Review: If you loved "Small Sacrifices" and "All She Ever Wanted", you'll find this book a welcome addition to your library. Ann Rule is at her best when she's slowly unwrapping a warped personality and she's certainly found the perfect subject in Dr. Debora Green. Brilliant and mercurial, Dr. Green is a surprising murderer - but the wonderful Ms. Rule shows us exactly how, why and when the murders were committed by this misguided physician. When the book is done, all you're left with is complete clarity in how Dr. Green did what she did. The resulting shivers are just a bonus.
