Rating: Summary: THE WONDROUS WAYS OF HUMAN SUFFERING Review: One sales executive recently told me that life is 85% emotion and 15% reality. I thought those figures were a little lopsided, but after reading this book I would say they are "right on."Emotions are 95% of what Jay Bakker is. His depths of despair and search for meaning in his life were primarily emotional in nature brought about by life events of others that were transferred to his life. He finally related all of his problems to being solved by the belief in God and how he physically accomplished this is the second half of this book. A good read. Jay never talked about attending any kind of school so he could be an ordained minister. Apparently the particular "brand" of church does not require a formal education which holds true for a number of churches. He is a grand graduate from the school of hard knocks, but not formal education.
Rating: Summary: Fan of A Son of A Preacher Man Review: Over the past few years I've became deeply interested in PTL, Heritage USA, and the Bakker family. I just got the book about three weeks ago, and read it within two days. It was very difficult to stop reading. His account of the events of his life is truly inspirational. It's hard to imagine what Jay has been through, but he tries his best to explain it to you. I was fortunate enough to meet him about one year ago when his Mother came to Atlanta. He truly is one of the most compassionate people I have met. If you have any interest in this family or PTL, I strongly recommend this book

Rating: Summary: Tattoos and GRACE........... Review: Tattoos, piercings, and attitude...FAITH and GRACE...on the cover the preset, inside the cover, the following. Faith and grace jumped out and grabbed my heart and my soul and allowed me to just have a glimpse of what struggle is about. Until I read this book, I complained daily that my life had no meaning, that God was there but He never spoke to me. Through reading about Jay's experience, I realized that my problems are so infinitely smaller than those other people have had to suffer through. Realization that God is in sight and He does love me, unconditionally. Jay's moving testimony and his ability to overcome obstacles (through God's amazing plan for his life) really inspired me to just let God do His amazing work. For God will not forsake you and God will not let you be tempted beyond what He knows you can stand. God is amazing and God loves us, each and every one. Not for what is on the outside but for the person He knows we all are. He sent the ultimate sacrifice for us because He loves us! Truly an amazing book and testimony. This story tells of grace and love. Truly uplifting. Jay, I respect you and I have a new-found outlook on life thanks to your testimony. Thank you so much...
Rating: Summary: My search for Grace is over..... Review: This book has been recommended to me by numerous people. All of whom are around my age (20.) I was supposed to read this book for a trip I was taking a couple of days later, but finished it in a record 48 hours. The book first begins explaining the whole scandle that happened with his family and PTL. I was only five or so at the time and don't remember exactly what happened and if you don't know at all you may find yourself a bit confused since you do have to know what's going on in order to fully understand his explainations. He sees what happend through his 11 year-old mind's eye and it's a very naive one at that. There are things I think he has still yet come to terms with his, as another reviewer put, "blind loyalty". The book moves on from the scandle to his own struggle with God, Christians, drugs, alcohol, his parents, and how he eventually became the man that he is today. This part engrossed me. Here is a man who can fully understand God's grace despite what others say or do, including himself. His passion for God even though he has noticeable imperfections makes you very aware of God's love and grace for us all. I've been a Christian for 7 years now it took this book to fully understand it and I won't go into sermon mode, but buy the book, read it. ... Guarenteed you'll be telling everyone about this book, just as I have, for serveral weeks, if not years to come.
Rating: Summary: Finding The Way Home Review: This book is a must for ANYONE. Whether you were fans of the Bakker family or scoffed at them after the scandal, this book will open up your mind, heart and spirit. Jay is brutally honest about his life experiences and his feelings toward some Christians. He challenges the church to rise up from its comfort zone and help those who are truly lost and those who need the unconditional love of Christ. Very bold and very well written. This book helped and inspired me and I encourage everyone, young or old,Christian or not,to read it. GREAT BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Son of a Preacher Man Review: This book is a very interesting history of the PTL network and events following it's demise as seen through the eyes of Jay Bakker, the son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. Several things come through. 1/ He was left in the care of others rather than his parents much of the time and was not properly disciplined. 2/ He never really heard the Gospel of Grace (i.e. the good news that salvation is by the grace of God through faithin Jesus Christ and NOT by works) until years after PTL was gone. 3/ The message he got was mainly presenting a good image to outsiders, whether phoney or not, and to earn salvation by good works. 4/ He personally had crisis after crisis, recorded in the book, and ended in total dispair and a life of drunkenness and drugs. 5/ He clearly sensed that "church people" had turned their backs on him. Then, through some folks who did not give up on him, he really heard the "GOOD NEWS" which to him was good news indeed. 6/ Gradually (NOT overnight) his life began to have meaning and purpose as God led him to tell his friends on "skid row" what God had done in his life. The result is that he has a ministry with people whom many would consider beyond hope. He knows there is hope because he was where they were. 7/ He has a lot to say about the weaknesses in the US church community and in explaining the need for reality in the lives of true believers. Worth reading...hard to put down!
Rating: Summary: Beaten up by the Church? Review: This book is for anyone who has ever felt beaten up by the church or Christians. I related to this book because I, too, am a pastor's kid. It's not an easy life. That's why Jay is an inspiration to me.
Rating: Summary: Inspirational and Moving Review: This was the most insprirational and moving book I've ever read. It really touched my heart and caused me to think... and to pray. There are people in the world today who need to know the unconditional love of Jesus Christ, not the conditional love of religion. We must stop judging people because they don't look and act exactly like we do. We must look at people through God's eyes and see the potential of who He made them to be. We must be willing to forgive as Christ forgave. We must turn our backs on religion and learn to be followers of Christ. Jay's story was so moving, I found myself choking back tears on the plane as I finished reading it. This book is well-written. It points out the flaws of the church in general, but does not do so out of bitterness, only out of concern. Read it. It will move you, too.
Rating: Summary: INSPIRATIONAL AND MOVING Review: What a blessing to see the story through a young boys eyes rather than the media's. I was really moved and brought to tears at the story, To hear what he is doing today and the love he has for all is wonderful! Jay Bakker is a true man of God.
