Summary: Good. But too short.
Review: I enjoy Miller quite a bit, and have for some time. So I like The Rants. I own it in paperback, cassette, and CD form. The CD, I just bought (from amazon! - plug, plug). Now, you know what it's about, and what to expect (you're either a Millerphile, or you aren't. If so, you'll like this. If not, you won't. Simple.) So I won't get into that.

Just a cautionary note, though - each of these 3 forms of The Rants has a different amount of material. Yes, the cassette and CD offerings are abridged, but, infuriatingly enough, not to the same degree. Further, the tape set is actually the more inclusive of the two. Like deluxe cassette box sets are all the rage, or something. Anyway, I found that to be quite aggravating - a superior technology receiving an inferior treatment. And a 2-CD version isn't even offered. But if you want to know what you'll be getting in this, the skimpiest version of The Rants (why do they never list tracks on this site?), before you buy, here goes:

1. The Religious Right 2. Our Legal System 3. Is Intelligence A Liability? 4. Violence 5. Political Correctness 6. Race 7. Civility 8. Infomercials 9. Dysfunction 10. Fame 11. The O.J. Trial - 6/30/95 12. What Men Want From Women 13. Homosexuality 14. Parenting 15. Tabloids

So that's that. If you want it all, buy the book. If you want to actually *hear* Dennis, get the CD and whine about it, like me. If you live in 1980, buy the tapes, and whine about it. Or you could just watch the show, probably the best idea.

Summary: A humorous, but intelligent look at the state of our society
Review: I enjoyed the audio version of this book even moreso than the paperback. Certainly there is nothing like hearing Miller himself convey his emotions directly to you. Hearing him speak gives what he is saying alot more clarity than just reading the book. Listen to this whenever you are in need of an informed perspective of the modern world we live in.

Summary: A Master of Critical Analysis- Believe It or Not!
Review: I laughed. I laughed so hard, I cried. I cried because I couldn't believe I was actually laughing at some of Miller's material! Be prepared to feel shocked at the humor Miller presents, often at the expense of other people's dignity. Beyond the laughs, however, lurks Miller's consciousness. He asks questions, probes belief systems, and attempts to get to the bottom of things. Don't make the mistake of dismissing Miller as a comedian; he is more than that. In 'The Rants', Miller proves that he is a master of critical analysis with a well-developed sense of humor.

Summary: Dennis Miller : The Rants
Review: I might want to purchase another copy of this book just so I can read it again... heh heh.

The Rants is a must read for anyone who has watched with enthusiasm Dennis Miller ranting on stage, and it is highly recommended to those who haven't. One really needn't see his performances to appreciate wholeheartedly the humor and thought-provoking nature of Miller's rants in the written word. After all, he's saying what we've all said... He just says it better.

Summary: Good Material, Bad Delivery
Review: I often tune in for Dennis Miller's cable program just to see his "Rants" monologue. He laughs at himself, and the audience will laugh right there with him. The audio version contains a lot of good, funny material, but the delivery leaves something to be desired. It is as if he is just reading the material just to get it over with. A live version from his HBO series would be far more enjoyable.

Summary: OF COURSE HE WANTS TO RANT!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: I personally want to get on a rant here because Dennis Miller is as funny as Leonardo di Caprio in a pre-teenage girl feminist rally. His vocabulary is swift, smart, and biting and his wit surpasses even that of Abe Vagoda. Viva Dennis Miller! Keep writing and keep ranting!

Summary: Beyond Humor
Review: I picked this book up expecting the same tired stand-up comedian-type rehash as others (ie: Degeneres, Seinfeld, Reiser, Allen, etc). However, Miller, as always, adds such thought to his 'rants' that there is no comparison to his peers' works. I found myself laughing aloud much of the time (and yes, I understand most of his references). I also found myself thinking about many of his issues long after I put the book down. When ideas are presented in such an entertaining way, it is hard to dismiss them so easily. It makes me wish we could clone Dennis Miller and have him speak at schools to avoid the dumbing down of the population. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Summary: Rants in the pants!
Review: I used to enjoy Dennis Miller books. I found him better in print form since I always found his TV delivery awkward and his demeanor pretentious. Now, after seeing and hearing his bigotted views on France and Iraq as well as his warped view of America the Great, I doubt I can enjoy the writings anymore. The kind of humour Mr Miller aspires to requires some depth of thought and a grasp of issues. To say that the French smell bad doesn't do it for me. It would be so much more funny if he cleverly ridiculed the French government's ( French government not French people) contradictions and idiosyncrasies than to just deliver a poop joke. I doubt he can deliver the goods. Mr Miller is really showing that he ain't all that smart after all. I also worry about his blind support for president Bush. Most everyone who backed Bush in this last Iraq war gave his White House the benefit of the doubt as to the idea that Sadam had WMDs. We must make a distinction between blind support and benefit of doubt. Other democracies were fully justified to either join or not join the coalition. They have a different perspective on the issues. It was their call. America was just more keen against Sadam than many others. Mr Miller couldn't see that and used France's unpopular (in America) stance to let his long standing bigotry out of the bag. The joke is truly on him.

Summary: for political types & fans of Dennis Miller this is worth it
Review: If you are a fan of Dennis Miller, or his sharp, witty, and often on point sense of humor, this is one of the better books to spend time with. His rapier like wit knows no bounds in that there is no one person or group that is safe from his attacks. And with the occational "you know he may be right" tag it can give you a new way of looking at things we take for granted.

Summary: Funny stuff
Review: Many people complain that Dennis Miller's jokes go over most people's heads. Well, for those of us who can pick up on his often obscure references, this book is a treat.

In today's comedy environment, where scatalogical humor and inane observational humor is the norm, Miller is a beacon of light in a fog of mediocrity. He knows just when to drop one of those patented analogies he is so well known. Of course, the analogies would be irrelevant if the monologues themselves weren't sharp and satiric looks at society today.

So, I say go read this book. It's funnier than watching a Himalayan mountain guide getting gored by a yak.
