Rating: Summary: A little slow moving, but a good book Review: Why would anyone but a dog as a pet in the timeframe that this story takes place in? Also, they live in a rustic community so the pig was a good idea as a pet. I thought it was very inspirational how a 13 year old boy much like myself changed his attitude as his understanding of his people and ancestry (especially his dad)increased. Also, for those kids who don't enjoy long books, not only is this a good book but also a short read.
Rating: Summary: The only book I have ever thrown away Review: This book was fraught with inaccuracies (who has ever heard of a Shaker family? they're celibate!) and gruesome scenes, starting in the first chapter. I usually donate children's books to the library after I have read them, but this one I tossed in the trash.
Rating: Summary: Save your money. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK Review: I absolutely hated this book. We had to read it in school and I had a hard time finishing it because it was so boring. That is odd for me because I absolutely love to read. If you ask me this book has a poor storyline. Why would anyone want a pet pig, they should have bought him a dog.
Rating: Summary: Not a Childrens book? Yeah right! Review: A Day No Pigs Would Die is a fantastic book. It's about a young man named Robert and his shaker family. One day Robert helps his neighbor 's cow deliver her calf. As a reward, his neighbor gives him a pig, which he calls Pinky. It just so happens Roberts father slotters' pigs for a living. Another time, his neighbor takes him to Rutland Fair. Robert had lots of fun; because it had always been his dream to go. Robert has to overcome many obstacles, become a man, and try and fill some mighty big shoes. This is a great book, filled with great emotions, and detail that makes you feel like you're there. If you're in the mood for a great book; this is the one for you. I highly recommend it! Oh yes. Someone posted that this wasn't a childrens book. Yeah right this is one of the best books I have ever read. I think all kids are mature enough to read this book! So I suggest you go and get it for your son/daughter.
Rating: Summary: A boy growing up Review: "A Day No Pigs Would Die" was a great book about a 13 year-old Quaker farm boy, Rob.When Rob saved the life of a neighbor's cow, the neighbor awards him with a piglet, who becomes his best friend. Rob and his pig do everything together, and he even takes his pig to the fair. However, pigs on farms generally all come to one end: butchering. What will happen to Rob and his pig? I'm afraid I made the plot of this book sound too simple, merely a boy and his pet pig. However, it was that and so much more! This book dealt with joy, sorrow, pain, death, and a boy growing to a man. I'd definitely recommend it for everyone ages 12 and up.
Rating: Summary: Great book for exploring emotions in reading Review: I read this book when I was about 10, over 20 years ago. It was the only book I re-read as a child and it affected me the same way both times- I cried at the end! This is a powerful story with strong values to carry the reader through the rough times at the end. The reader is really forced to look back on all they've learned in the early chapters of the book and hold on to it for the rocky ending. A tough read, but a great exercise in dealing with powerful issues for children.
Rating: Summary: A day no pigs would die! Review: A day no pigs would die was the best book in the world! I suggest that you read it! Okay bye bye! hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe! I have noting to do so Iwrote this! :o)
Rating: Summary: Not for Children Review: I recently read this book because my daughter is reading it in her 7th grade English class. I was very disturbed by a few scenes and don't believe that this book belongs in a middle school English class. If this book were in movie form, it would be rated "R". The scene about "weazeling the dog" and "breeding(or should I say raping) the barren pig were too much for me to stomach, let alone my 12 year old daughter. Needless to say, my daughter will not be finishing this book. Parents beware of this book if your youngsters are reading it at school. Please ask!
Rating: Summary: Very emotional story. Review: This book was a very realistic and emotional story of a Shaker family. It was very touching at times and very heart wrenching at others. I believe it was well written for the most part, but there were a few scenes that were too graphic for young readers. I think it is appropriate for High School children and older. I read this book because my daughter was reading it in middle school. I am very glad I read the book!
Rating: Summary: Starts off great, then laggs. Review: I recently read this book for my English class, and I enjoyed ity at first. However, the novel began to slow down leading up to a rough climax. (!SPOILER WARNING!) I find it quite odd that the book focuses on the death of an animal, but shrugs off the death of the father in two sentences. (!END SPOILER!) The climax was extremely displeasing, leaving a bitter taste in my mouth and a bad impression of the author. The book gos into quite explicit detail, which is enough to upset your stomach. I recommend this book to only people who are curious about the Shaker way of life.
