Rating: Summary: ... Review: Like many others, I read this book after watching "Jackie Brown." I hadn't read a Leonard book before, so was unsure quite what the writing would be like. I was pleased to find that it didn't try too hard to be deep and descriptive. The story moved and was a quick read.
The interesting things about "Rum Punch" is also what makes "Jackie Brown" a really good film. Leonard has other side plots and stories happening that don't appear at all in the film, so there are still some surprises for those who watched the movie. Yet, for the movie story, it was definately good to cut those out as it really tightened up the flow of the story.
The best thing about the book was the ending. In "Jackie Brown," Tarantino takes the ending beyond "Rum Punch's" by a hair... making a conclution for the viewer that Leonard had let the readers make for themselves. I prefer the way Leonard doesn't make any definate conclution about whether Max goes with Jackie or if he stays with his bail bonds business.
Rating: Summary: Alright Leonard Review: No where near as good as other Leonard books like Bandits, Glitz, or Freaky Deaky.
Rating: Summary: A must for Jackie Brown fans Review: Obviously, this is the book the movie Jackie Brown is based upon, but fans of that movie must read this. I saw the movie first, but being a big Elmore Leonard fan, I bought the book soon after. I must say I like the book better, since some things in the book were left out of the film.People who want to get introduced to Leonard, this is a good place to start.
Rating: Summary: Ok. Review: Once, more Leonard put together a good story with good characters, but it lacked Leonard's usual sense of cool. Tarantino's film was surprisingly more stylish, funny. It's a good book, but I'd call it sub-par for Leonard. I wouldn't reccomend it.
Rating: Summary: Elmore Leonard at his best. Review: Quentin Tarantino is born to bring Leonard's bood to the big screen. The book is Great.
Rating: Summary: Rum Pounch: A Fantastic Novel Review: Rum Pounch holds true to Elmore Leonards unique and entertaining syle of writing. It is a fantastic, funny, and suspensful tale about the people we are scared to met, but love to read about. Rum Pounch is a ten plus!
Rating: Summary: Great Characters and funny humor make this a great read. Review: The movie Jackie Brown was good but not as good as Rum punch, which it was made from. I thought Louis Gara was a great character and a hilarious burn-out. Melanie was a great character who got what was coming to her.All in all, the book had a great plot and a mesmorizing scene in which they get into a fight with a neo-nazi. You've got to read this!
Rating: Summary: A Very Entertaining Novel. Review: The thing that made me wanna read this book mainly was because I saw Quentin Tarantino's "Jackie Brown" which I loved. I knew that Tarantino had changed a lot of stuff from the book like the race and name of the main character but really it's almost the same. The novel is about a white flight attendant named Jackie Burke. She carries money back and forth for a gun runner named
Ordell "Whitebread" Robbie. When the cops are tipped off and are lead to Jackie, they use her to try and catch Ordell. However Jackie has a plan of her own. The cops Faron Tyler and Ray Nicolette were changed a little bit too from the book to the movie. In the book there are scenes where the two stake out and watch Ordell and also in the book one of the cops name is Faron Tyler in the movie it's Mark Dargas. Anyway besides trying to get Ordell's money,Jackie falls for a lonely bail bondsman named
Max Cherry (After reading the book I realized Robert Forster was perfect casting for the movie). The relationship in "Rum Punch"
and the relationship in "Jackie Brown" between Jackie and Max differs a lot. In "Rum Punch" the relationship is intimate,
in "Jackie Brown" it's more of a silent understanding of each other. The book like all books is able to give a lot more detail that even the great Tarantino could not fit into the movie, and it is interesting to read the situations that undertook in "Jackie Brown" and to hear what the characters are thinking. It doesn't mean anything to the movie but still. This was the first novel i've read by Elmore Leonard and I hope to read a lot more in the future.A.
Rating: Summary: SOOOOOOOO Good! Review: This book would have to be one of the best I've ever read in my entire life. Elmore Leonard is a genious! This was the first book I have read by this author, and I have just started reading "Get Shorty," which is good as well.
Rating: Summary: A Smart, Sexy, and Original Novel Review: This is a great book. The plot was unpredictable and it was a wild and crazy ride! Leonard fans will like it. ENJOY!!!
