Rating: Summary: Not one of my Oprah favorites Review: This book was slow in spots but I enjoyed reading about the girl's relationship with her family after the tragedy. I also enjoyed her friendship with Pearl who reminded her of her sister.
Rating: Summary: I thought this book was slow and lacked a focal point. Review: I was disappointed in the book River, Cross My Heart. I have read a lot of Oprah's Book Club selections and most of them have been worthwhile. This book was not awful, but it certainly did not keep me turning the pages.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: Oh, well, Oprah can't hit a home run every time. The ending of this book bothered me for days.
Rating: Summary: A GOOD BOOK Review: This was not one of my favorite books but still well worth the time it took to read it. ..It is always good to see how an author deals with her characters, and try to learn somthing from the reading .. If you read this book, or want to read one that goes straight to your heart, read Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. . .It is a beautiful story of unrequited love. . .for certain the love story of the nineties. I intended to give the book a quick read, but I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down. From the very beginning, I was fully caught up in the heart-wrenching account of Julie Hunter's battle with lupus and her growing love for Don Lipton. This love, in the face of Julie's impending death, makes for a story that covers the range of human emotions. The touches of humor are great, too, they add some nice contrast and lighten things a bit when emotions are running high. I've never read a book more deserving of being published. It has rare depth. Julie's story will remind your readers that life and love are precious and not to be taken for granted. It has had an impact on me, and for that I'm grateful. Stolen Moments is written with so much sensitivity that it made me want to cry. It is a spellbinder. What terrific writing. Barbara does have an exceptional gift!
Rating: Summary: A very good read! Review: I enjoyed this book immensely. I thought that Ms. Clarke did a wonderful job of breathing life into the characters and making them real. Her portrayal of the close-knit community in which the Bynums lived reminded me so much of the neighborhood that I grew up in. I have resided in the metropolitan Washington area for about 17 years and was quite surprised to learn that Georgetown had such a strong African-American history. I initially didn't want to read the book since it was about the death of a child, but Ms. Clarke handled the situation beautifully; she didn't dwell on the actual event, but the effect it had on almost everyone who witnessed or heard about it. I would recommend this book highly.
Rating: Summary: thoughtful but sometimes slow book Review: I always read oprahs picks. This one was ok, but not one of her best. I felt sad for Johnnie, I am not sure she ever fully grasped her sisters death. I think it haunted her. That may be why she thought she saw her sometimes. I think her mother was a strong woman. I thought the author was very good. I liked the way she used words and prose. I will read any other books she writes.
Rating: Summary: A so-so book Review: This book took quite a few pages to get the ball rolling, but towards the middle it got better. However, my criteria for a good book gets better WAY before the middle! My book club read this together and we all decided it wasn't a great big deal, but it also wasn't the worst thing we have ever read. Personally, I liked it for what it was: a book. Nothing more, nothing less.
Rating: Summary: A major disappointment Review: While the book was wrought with vivid language and a picture I could see in my mind's eye of 1920's Georgetown, there was no plot, no climax, and no conclusion. The book left me wanting and it could have satisfied my desire for a conclusion when you consider it was little more than 220 pages. This is an unfinished work. Take it slowly if you decide to read this book. The water symbolism / imagery is difficult at best to follow.
Rating: Summary: a good read with a disappointing ending Review: I usually love all of the books that Oprah recommends. This one didn't seem to have the depth to make me think past what was written on the page. I turned another page expecting more only to find out that it was the end. Somehow the story didn't seem resolved for me.
Rating: Summary: Not one of Oprah's best recommendations Review: I grew to love the characters, but the book was stuck in neutral.
