Rating: Summary: Scary - From a person that grew up along New Madrid Fault Review: I grew up around Mayfield and Paducah Kentucky, so this book addressed a lot of my worries, such as Kentucky Dam, and the Nuclear Gas plant in Paducah. I thought it was fast paced and I enjoyed it. Though I didn't like the ideal of them exploding a Nuke in Kaler, KY. hahah
Rating: Summary: Gave me chills Review: I had the mixed blessing of bringing this book with me on a trip through Kennett, MO to Memphis, TN. In the evenings, I would be reading about all of the earth changes that devastated the places where I had just visited....If you live anywhere in the Midwest, this book is terrifying because you can picture what's happening! The author's plot holds together as the earth splits apart, and he allows us to visit some ordinary citzens as well as the scientists ands and politicians dealing with the disaster. Some grammatical problems (incomplete sentences) kept me from giving this 5 stars, but in a way this flaw (fault?) causes the novel to read like a news article. This makes it more realistic!
Rating: Summary: Very Good Book Review: I just read 8.4, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. I like earth science- earthquakes in particular - , and have always enjoyed learning more. I learned a great deal with this book - mainly, the scary picture of what would happen to the entire United States the NMSZ goes off as it did almost two hundred years ago. I currently live in a moderate damage area, but I have close family in the direct hit area. It is disturbing to contemplate. I recommend this book, as well as The Rift, by Walter J. Williams.

Rating: Summary: A BOOK THAT COULD'VE BEEN GREAT BUT WASN'T Review: I read 8.4 by PETER HERNON and even though I found the seismology aspect interesting. I felt that the character's in this story were too uninteresting and almost made me fall asleep I thought that they could've been developed a whole lot better espically in the face of what they expirence in the book. Anyway skip this book 8.4 it's not worth the money.
Rating: Summary: Shake Rattle and Read Review: I really did enjoy this novel. I do happen to agree with the other reviewers that there are several places that the book comes up short (the romance and some of the road names come to mind.) however, the book is fast paced and interesting. Having lived in the area and also having lived thru several earthquakes (in other parts of the country) I found myself drawn into the story several times. Especially when they are underground with earthquakes activity around. Sure it plays on several of my primal fears; however I found myself REALLY believing in the danger to the characters of the novel. The science is accurate, the characters are more than adequate, and I find that I must really recomend this novel if you are looking for an evenings escapist enjoyment. Read it, and enjoy it. It does have its flaws, but very few novels don't. I think you will enjoy it and get caught up in the situations that the author puts you in.

Rating: Summary: A Real Eye-Opener Review: I thouroughly enjoyed the book. I happen to live in the area where most of the action takes place and found it very interesting to see what someone thought the results of a major earthquake in this area would be. This is one to really make you think! The book does get a little technical, but overall makes for quite enjoyable reading.

Rating: Summary: Fiction or Fact ?? Review: I work in Emergency Management in the mid-west and I found the book very scary..I have heard much of the technical information in the book from scientists and seismologists at seminars on emergency preparedness planning. I wish more people in the New Madrid Seismic Zone would read this book and think about the possibilities that it does contain some facts. There will be an earth quake in this area some day and I hope Mr. Hernon's book contains a great exaggeration of the truth...But we won't know until it happens.
