Summary: Dinosaur historical fiction...based on real paleo-ecology
Review: Raptor Red is a female Utahraptor dinosaur who, with her life mate, makes her way to North America from Asia during the days of an ancient land bridge. Not long after we join our heroine tragedy strikes and she is left alone. You will find yourself empathising with Raptor Red as she deals with various challenges. Bakker does a good job at presenting situations and an entire story line without endulging in much if any anthropomorphism. Dinosaurs are, after all, dinosaurs, not humans.

Dr. Bob Bakker is one of the world's leading dinosaur paleontologists, and he weaves an intruiging tale of historical fictional based on real fossil evidence and supporting information, and on ideas that are gaining popularity in the way we view dinosaurs and how they interacted with each other and their environment.

I recommend this book to readers of all ages and interests. Adults will be fascinated by it, children will enjoy it, and even scientists will admit that it could have happened the way Bakker tells it. This is a great book to read to or with your family.

I encourage you to give it a try.

Summary: compelling and imaginative
Review: This novel by paleontologist Robert Bakker enables the reader to take a glimpse into the life of a female Utahraptor, a recently discovered giant raptor species which seems to deserve the title of "superpredator." Based upon paleontological data and apparently reasonable conjecture, Bakker describes the ecology of the Utahraptor during its initial migrations across the land bridge between Asia and North America in the early Cretaceous Period. The interactions between the heroine and members of her own species, as well as with the other species in these regions, provide a realistic view of what life was like during these times. Bakker's descriptions of Raptor Red's new learning experiences (when travelling to new locations) and memories may have been based upon conjecture from the actual paleontological evidence, but it would seem that most of paleontology is based upon the same types of conjecture. The most interesting aspect of the novel was its attempt to present a thorough account of the ecology of each region that the Utahraptors encountered (from floodplains to seashores to snowy alpine forests), including details about the evolution of regional flora and fauna (including birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, and other animals besides the resident dinosaurs). It is this description of ecology and evolution that has earned the novel such respect in my eyes, and is why the book is one of my favorites.

Summary: Raptor Red... loved it!
Review: I always thought some types of Dinosaur were smart and able to survive on thier intelligence rather than the inertia of their size, like a T-Rex for example! But I think that Robert T. Bakker has the right idea, some dinosaurs were smart and able to use logic and to think. (I mean sure they didn't know how to do calculus) but this book shows an excellent perspective. I have never read a book with so much thought, and passion put into the writing! Great job!

Summary: The audiobook is chilling!
Review: Attention! Calling All Readers! You can enjoy this again in an entirely different way. I loved the audiobook on this. Every bit as gut-wrenching and real as the book. Yes, I do both once in a while and this one deserves it. I can't believe to this day that this didn't become a mega-bestseller in both formats. GRRRRRR.
