Rating: Summary: Characters so real you'll never believe it Review: I am a really big fan of Bakker. I have been interested in palaeontology for years and was very excited about this book. It did not let me down. Bakker does not make the mistake many fantasy writers do of merely making the characters human. These are definitely dinosaurs and I think it was not only very accurate but a beautiful look at the lives of some extraordinary creatures. I could not put this book down and am hoping for a sequel
Rating: Summary: Raptor Red sucks! Review: What was Bakker thinking when he wrote this book? Was he thinking straight? THIS BOOK IS TERRIBLE!!! I don't know why so many people gave this book good reviews. WORDS OF WISDOM:reading this book is a very bad idea
Rating: Summary: an extraordinary work Review: Raptor Red is a narrative about a family of Utahraptor dinosaurs that lived in the early Cretaceous peroid. All of the characters in the book are dinosaurs and early mammals, but Bakker keeps anthropomorphism to a minimum. All of the actions and emotions he attributes to the characters are footed in extrapolations from paleontology and modern zoology. I would not recommend the book for pre-adolescents because of its straightforeward treatment of such topics as death, predation, sexual awareness and identity among the raptor family. Bakker intended this work to show how dinosaurs adapted to a dynamic ecosystem without reading like a paleontology primer. He succeeds. The illustrations and maps that he provides to give context are simply wonderful
Rating: Summary: A WELL WRITTEN, SCIENTIFICALLY ACCUARATE PAGE-TURNER Review: If you are a PBS viewer, you have probably seen Robert Bakker enthusiastically discussing his dinosaur theories. With his Stetson hat and bushy
beard, he looks more like a cowboy than a serious
scientist. But don't be fooled by looks, this man
knows how to breathe life into creatures that have
been dead for millenia. He clearly knows and loves
the dinosaurs that fascinate almost everyone.
Raptor Red is a marvelous adventure, full of action
and with great dino characters. The novel is so
skillfully written you will almost believe the author
has traveled back in time and observed the living animals in their natural environment. An added bonus
is that the book is chock-full of scientific
information so skillfully woven into the story that
you won't even realize how much knowledge you are
effortlessly absorbing.
DON'T MISS this wonderful tale. By the way, if you see the flick Lost World, you can't miss the Ingen scientist who is a dead ringer
for Bakker. It was the one redeeming quality of a miserable movie!!
Rating: Summary: Much more than a simple raptor story... Review: I have just finished reading 'Raptor Red' and I really enjoyed it VERY, VERY much! However, I don't think that it was only about raptors and their lifes. For me, the raptor story was just a sort of excuse to tell indirectly a quite different story ... the one about how close we all still are sometimes to 'animal-like', instinctive behavior... This aspect of the book made me think over many of our everyday reactions... and this is, in my opinion, a great compliment for an author.
Unfortunately, the cover of the paperback edition doesn't really fit with this aspect of the book. It is so 'science fiction'-like, that it was almost impossible for a friend of mine to convince me that the book is much more interesting than it's stupid cover.
Rating: Summary: One of my all time favorites Review: Raptor Red is the most vivid historical fiction that I have read other than Jean Auel's Earth's Children Series. I have to be honest. I bought the book because it had a neat cover and because I collect books on dinosaurs. I never expected to finish the entire book, in about 6 hours, after buying it. I just couldn't put it down. As a result of cramming all of that vivid imagery into my brain; I was, a Raptor in my dreams that night! Never in my life has a book gotten into my head the way that Raptor Red did. I just had to whip out my laser disk of Jurassic Park and watch it the next day. I can only hope that this is not just a one time deviation from Mr. Bakker's more serious work
Rating: Summary: Robert Bakkers narrative takes you back millions of years. Review: Robert Bakker's book, Raptor Red is a very well conceived historical fiction which puts you in the eyes of a Jurassic dinosaur, Raptor Red. Following her life on the wind swept plains of prehistoric Utah, the reader feels as if he or she were there, watching the whole story unfold. Bakker uses rich imagry, and first hand knowledge from his background as a palentologist to suppose what life must have been like: savage, brutal, a fight for survival, yet he manages to weave humor, and several touching moments-throwing conventional wisdom of the brutish lumbering creatures out the door in favor of a more enlightened view of the creatures often thought of as vicious and stupid.
In summary, Mr. Bakker has written a fast-paced sensative and very readable story of a dinosaur from the enlightened perspective of a rebel palentologist.

Rating: Summary: This is a very interesting and very cool books, i loved it!! Review: This is one od the best books ive ever read its very interesting how it puts you in the eyes of raptor red
and shows you how she sees everything.
Rating: Summary: Unique perspective on an old story Review: Raptor Red was definitely a unique book. Learn and experiencelife as a dinosaur, through the eyes of a dinosaur. I could see and feel what life might of been like for dinosaurs as they moved up or down the evolutionary ladder. I developed empathy for "Raptor Red" and her kin. This is an educational as well as eye-opening book and I recommend it to anyone who loves dinosaurs.
Rating: Summary: Bakker should make low-budget movies, instead. Review: If you would like to know about dinosaurs, please read another
book. Raptor Red is a highly unbelievable story. It's just the
tale of sophomoric Bakker's favorite dinosaurs: the bigger the
better. "The science suffers at the expense of entertainment."
