Rating: Summary: CUTting edge Review: If you have ever read SPEAK by Laurie Anderson, you will love CUT, written by Patricia McCormick. CUT is a thrilling, keep you reading, fiction book about a young girl named Callie and how she is dealing with her problems. Callie is at a "residential trearment facility" called Sea Pines because she cuts herself. While she is there, she becomes mute, and does not have any friends. Callie has to over come all of that, stop cutting herself, and realize that her brothers sickness is NOT her fault. Can Callie do this, or will she just take the easy way out and cut herself? This book was excellent, and I would definently recomend it to any teenage girl.
Rating: Summary: Cut by: Patricia McCormick Review: *Cut was about a girl named Callie who had a problem hurting herself with whatever was sharp enough. So, she had to go to a place called "Sea Pines, but the girls who went there called it "Sick Minds" because it was for people with all types of problems such as eating disorders, cutting, anger management, etc. Callie didn't like it there at all so she never talked. That's how she got the nickname S.T for silent treatment. Finally, she starts to talk in therapy and starts hanging out with the girl's there. She was getting better. She talked a lot about her brother, Sam. she thought she was the cause of him always being sick. She got tired of being in the institution so she ran away. She called her dad collect to come and pick her up at the nearest Dunkin Donuts. There she met a waitress who gave her a free donut and hot chocolate. Her dad came and suggested they go home but Callie thought about giving sea pines another chance and her dad drives her back. That's where the story ends.*the one scene that sticks out in the book is when the therapist is talking to Callie about her not talking. she says on (P.30), "Sometimes when we're in situations where we feel we're not in control, we do things; especially things that take a lot of energy, as a way of making ourselves feel we have some power." I think this quote is significant because it shows when you feel alone and helpless, you would do anything to make yourself seem unique and irreplaceable. *I think this book was very good. It can show people that they should be grateful for what they have. What Callie was doing in this story, I'm sure a lot of other teens are doing it. This book can help people stop and just think how thankful they should be for coming into this world normal or not having as many problems as these girls in this book. *I would recommend this book to anyone because it can help people through their problems and time of need.
Rating: Summary: Semi-Decent Young Adult Book Review: Definately not a hard read for anyone, but an entertaining one at least. The characters are likeable, the descriptions true to life, and though the ending is rather abrupt, it doesn't take away from the book itself.
Rating: Summary: reality? Review: the only thing that upset me about this book is that she is not in a psychiatric hospital. in fact, i can't figure out what it is. it's a combination of a psychiatric hospital and a residential program. for one thing, psychiatric hospitals are locked. secondly, they are short-term. rarely do you stay over two weeks, unless they are looking for other placement. and a hospital would not kick you out for not speaking. they can't do that. they may send you long term, but they wouldn't kick you out. technicalities aside, this book was very interesting. callie said a lot by choosing to stay silent. this book went into some of the reasons behind her self-injury, such as feeling responsible for her brother's illness and not getting enough support from her mother. ...
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: Cut was a great book. It helped me through alot of my problems and helped me realize that I am not the only person with these peroblems. After I read the book I was convinced in getting help and trying to stop. I give this book 5 stars because it is realistic in some of the parts and it is one of the best books that I have read in a long time.
Rating: Summary: My Comments on the Book "Cut" Review: I read "Cut" by Patricia McCormick for my College English course. I am glad that I choose this book. As you can tell from the title of the book, Callie cuts herself. She cuts herself to releave stress at home. Callie (the main character) is very interesting in the way she doesn't talk to anyone at first, at home or the Sea Pines, aka - Sick Minds, the Institue she is sent to to deal with her problem. Then with therapy, Callie learns that all her family problems are not her fault, and cutting herself will not help her escape those problems. With those thoughts running in her mind, Callie starts to come around. Talking to people and asking questions about her past. I really enjoyed this book. It brought a sense of hope to me, the reader. The sense that I can work through any problems I have just by understanding the situation. I encourage as many people as possible to read this book.
Rating: Summary: Good Book, but not for me. Review: I enjoyed the book very much. It has everything you could want. I picked it up in my English class as an assingment, but it was so much more for me. I self-harm, how the book was put in front of me; or even further, why the book was put in front of me, I don't know. I have talked to a few other people who have read the book who also self injure. They came up with the same conclusion I had, If your looking to stop cutting; don't read the book. Through the beginning and middle it has a force that makes you want to cut more and more, and I did. On the other side, if you dont self injure and are looking to find out more about it, or just find a good book you found it.
Rating: Summary: Stupid, illogical, and badly written Review: I have been cutting for almost a year. Callie's reasons for cutting were so thin they were laughable. It was emotionally bereft, McCormick doesn't even try to describe the overwhelming shame, urge, and self-hatred that are all a part of self injury. There just aren't enough bad words for how awful this book is! If you want to read about self injury, first read Skin Game by Caroline Kettlewell. I love this book; I have read it at least a dozen times. A Bright Red Scream by Strong is very good as well. Cutting by Levenkron is good for people trying to understand this from a therapist's point of view. Bodily Harm by Conterio, co founder of S.A.F.E., is decent, but they have some misconceptions about SI.
Rating: Summary: Book Review for "Cut" Review: I read "Cut" by Lucia McCormick. I think she is a great author. It was such a creative way of how she wrote this story. She put the story in first person through Callie, and she was talking to the therapist the whole time. The book was very interesting because it tells about a girl in a rehabilitation center through her point of view. It said everything she was thinking about and what she thought of all the people in the story. The story gave many details to give the ready a good idea of what Callie is going through and how she feels about it. The details helped me understand it because it kind of felt like I was there, at Sean Pines, with Callie and all her friends. I felt like I was just watching them and I knew everything that went on with them. Like on page 3 when Callie was in a cross country meet she said, "The soles of her sneakers swam up and down in front of me, first one, then the other, a grid of ridges that spelled out the upside-down name of the shoe company. My steps fall in parallel with hers. My feet went where her feet just had been. She leaned around the corner, I leaned around the corner. She breathed, I breathed." Just from reading that you can just picture in your mind what was happening. Patricia McCormick does not really teach us a lesson in this story. If Callie would have graduated from Sea Pines, then there would be a lesson and that lesson would be never give up hope because in the end everything will be okay. That is the thing I didn't like about this story. The ending wasn't too great. I though Callie would have gotten better and she would have graduated from Sea Pines, but she didn't .At the end of the story, she was still there. "Cut" kind of relates to my life because in middle school I had a few friends who were suicidal. I guess the book kind of interested me because I wanted to read about a girl that had the same problem as my friends. I would definitely recommend this book to other people. It is very different from other books. Even if you don't like to read, this book will like suck you into it and you will just want to keep reading.
Rating: Summary: Easy to relate. Review: I read this book over the summer. I am, like Callie, a cutter. I also self injure other ways. Reading this book just made me realize that every cutter may have a different reason for what they do, but almost all cutters get the same feelings from self injury. A book that was so easy to relate to was truly refreshing. I recommend it to self-injurers and those who have never even thought about self injury alike. I believe it portrays cutting in an accurate way and I think that people who do not cut who read this book will better understand why people self injure. It is a truly wonderful book.
